FIU's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — FIU Regulation 2501, the Student Conduct and Honor Code, governs the conduct process; FIU's conduct office notes that programs may have program-specific standards but that allegations must first be adjudicated under the Code; and course syllabi may add their own AI rules. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.
What is documented — and what isn't
FIU's Division of Information Technology and its Training & Resource Center run instructor trainings on Turnitin's AI Indicator. The training listed for June 14, 2023 states (event page retrieved Aug 31, 2026):
Source: Turnitin: AI Indicator Training for FIU Faculty — FIU Events Calendar. A more recent session, listed for January 13, 2026, states (event page retrieved Aug 31, 2026):
Source: Turnitin: Updates to AI Indicator — FIU Events Calendar. FIU's Ed Tech Services also publishes a faculty Turnitin page, read in a browser on Aug 23, 2026. It describes Turnitin as "a suite of products that help faculty prevent plagiarism and grade written assignments" and distinguishes two configurations, the Plagiarism Framework and Feedback Studio, comparing them on features such as the "Originality Check report," grading tools, and rubrics. The page names no AI-writing-detection feature and says nothing about the AI Indicator (no on-page date displayed). Source: Turnitin — FIU Ed Tech Services.
No campus-wide statement on how AI Indicator results may or may not be used as evidence in a misconduct case was located in this review. Regulation FIU-2501, the Student Conduct and Honor Code, contains no occurrence of "artificial intelligence," "AI," "generative," or any comparable term anywhere in its 35 pages (full text searched Aug 23, 2026 and re-searched Aug 31, 2026). The nearest language is in the Code's definition of Cheating, which reaches "automated tools" without naming AI — quoted in section 02 below. Your syllabus and assignment instructions are therefore among the relevant sources for your own situation.
What FIU's own pages say about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- “The right to be accompanied by an Advisor of their choice and expense at any time during the Code process.” — FIU-2501 Student Conduct and Honor Code, Section 11, Due Process Rights of the Respondent (effective June 16, 2025; retrieved Aug 31, 2026) · FIU-2501 (PDF)
- What follows on the record
- “Suspension(s) and Expulsion will be noted permanently on a Student’s academic transcript.” On retention: “Student conduct-related files are kept in compliance with General Records Schedule GS5, but not for less than seven (7) years from the date of the last incident(s) that the Respondent was involved in that resulted in Code charges.” — FIU-2501, Section 19, Records (effective June 16, 2025; retrieved Aug 31, 2026) · FIU-2501 (PDF)
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution’s own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
From the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity (SCAI), Division of Student Affairs (retrieved Aug 31, 2026):
From SCAI's instructor-facing "For Faculty" page (last verified Aug 23, 2026; as of Aug 31, 2026 this address returns FIU's own "Page Not Found" and no successor was located on dasa.fiu.edu, so the two quotations below are retained as last verified and a manual check is needed — see the change log) — quoted because it describes the process a student experiences:
Sources: Student Conduct and Academic Integrity — Division of Student Affairs; For Faculty — SCAI. SCAI's own page directs readers to particular sections of the Code: Section 1 (Definitions), Section 4 (Amnesty), Section 5 (Conduct Violation), Section 6 (Academic Misconduct Violations), Section 11 (Due Process Rights of the Respondent), Section 12 (Rights of the Complainant), Section 13 (Principles of Group Responsibility), Section 16 (Sanctions), Section 17 (Withdrawal from a course pending charges), and Section 18 (Appeals).
The Code itself (FIU-2501, effective June 16, 2025) was read in full on Aug 23, 2026. From Section 6, Academic Misconduct Violations, under the heading Cheating:
From Section 11, Due Process Rights of the Respondent — the Code states "The Respondent has the following rights," then lists eleven, among them:
From Section 18, Appeals:
The Code lists three permitted bases for an appeal. The first is "Violations of the appealing party's rights or other failure to follow the Student Conduct procedures that substantially affected the outcome of the initial hearing." The second is "New information which was not available at the time of the hearing and that the new information could have substantially affected the outcome." The third is that "The severity of the sanction is disproportionate to the nature of the charge(s)." On status while an appeal is pending, the Code states that "An appeal has no effect on a Respondent's status when the sanction was suspension or expulsion," and that in any other case "once an appeal is requested, the sanction(s) will be stayed and will not take effect until the appeal process has been completed." What any of this means for a particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Organizing your own drafts and records to bring to any of this: the records checklist. Capturing the pages above as they read today, and keeping your own dated record beside them: what to do with these sources.
Revision history of this page
2026-08-22 — Page created. All quotations retrieved this date from the fiu.edu pages linked beside them; source-page dates where displayed: event dates of June 14, 2023 and January 13, 2026 (Division of IT calendar listings) and the Code's stated effective date of June 16, 2025; SCAI web pages displayed no revision dates, so retrieval dates are recorded instead. The current FIU-2501 Code PDF and the Ed Tech Services faculty Turnitin page could not be captured as text; both are listed by title and link only, with nothing quoted or paraphrased from them — a manual read is required before their contents are characterized here. No campus-wide statement on the evidentiary use of AI Indicator results was located, and none is asserted. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-08-22). 2026-08-22 — The FIU-2501 Code PDF (effective June 16, 2025) and the Ed Tech Services faculty Turnitin page were read manually by the reviewer, who confirmed this page's characterization of both; they remain listed by title and link, with nothing quoted from them. Internet Archive captures: to be added.
2026-08-23 — Sources re-fetched and compared this date by an automated source re-verification; no human review is claimed for this entry. Every capturable source was reachable and unchanged, with each quotation still present verbatim: the June 14, 2023 Turnitin AI Indicator training listing (event page still shows Wednesday, June 14, 2023, hosted by the Division of Information Technology and the Training & Resource Center); the January 13, 2026 "Turnitin: Updates to AI Indicator" listing (still shows Tuesday, January 13, 2026, same departments); SCAI's office overview; and SCAI's For Faculty page, where the program-standards passage and the Incomplete-grade passage were both confirmed word for word. Retrieval dates throughout were advanced to this date. Two additions from the re-fetch: SCAI's overview page quotes the Code's own page-one statement on when the Code applies, which is now reproduced in section 02 and labeled as the page attributes it; and that page's list of Code sections of interest is longer than section 02 previously reported, so the full list — Sections 1, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17 and 18 — is now given. The FIU-2501 Code PDF is served at a second address as well, and both are now shown in the source map. Neither the Code PDF nor the Ed Tech Services faculty Turnitin page could be captured as text in this run; both returned no readable body, so both remain listed by title and link with nothing quoted from them, and the manual read the reviewer recorded on 2026-08-22 remains the basis for this page's characterization of them. The detection-status check was re-run across FIU's Division of IT calendar, Ed Tech Services, SCAI and regulations pages: the Turnitin AI Indicator remains documented as in institutional use through instructor trainings, and no first-party statement on whether AI Indicator results may be used as evidence in a misconduct case was located, so the stated absence in section 01 stands unchanged. Internet Archive Save Page Now could not be reached from the environment this review ran in; captures remain pending for all sources on this page.
2026-08-23 (second entry) — Both sources this page had been carrying by title and link only were read in full this date in a browser, and both are now quoted rather than characterized. The FIU-2501 Code PDF (effective June 16, 2025; 35 pages) was read end to end. Section 02 now quotes the Cheating definition from Section 6, six of the eleven rights listed in Section 11, and five provisions of Section 18 including the appellate officer, the file-review standard, the burden on the appellant, the filing deadline of 5:00pm on the seventh Business Day after the decision letter is delivered, and the consequence of missing it. The three permitted bases for appeal and the rules on sanction status pending appeal are also now given. The section-by-section pointer list that section 02 previously ended on is retained. A substantive finding from that read is recorded in section 01: the Code contains no occurrence of "artificial intelligence," "AI," "generative," or any comparable term anywhere in its text, and the only language reaching in that direction is the phrase "automated tools" inside the Cheating definition. This is a change in what can be said about FIU, not a change at FIU: the absence was previously unverified because the PDF had not been read. The Ed Tech Services faculty Turnitin page was also read and is now described from its own text — it distinguishes the Plagiarism Framework from Feedback Studio, names the Originality Check report, and names no AI-detection feature at all, which is worth setting beside the AI Indicator trainings quoted above it. One first-party source was added: the FIU-2501 regulation record at regulations.fiu.edu, which confirms the June 16, 2025 version is the active one and lists thirty prior versions back to February 2012. The reviewer's manual read of 2026-08-22 is no longer the sole basis for anything on this page. Internet Archive captures were made this date for the SCAI overview, the Ed Tech Services Turnitin page, the FIU-2501 regulation record, and both AI Indicator training listings (2023, 2026); the Code PDF's most recent capture is 2026-06-11. The SCAI For Faculty page hit the archive's rate limit and remains uncaptured.
2026-08-23 — Ombuds capture added this date: FIU publishes a student Ombudsperson in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, described by FIU as independent, impartial, confidential, and informal. FIU's own page warns that emailing the Ombudsperson creates a public record and compromises confidentiality; that warning is reproduced rather than paraphrased. Sources re-fetched and compared this date; automated pass, not a human review.
2026-08-23 — Section 02 now opens with the two questions an adviser raises first. Who may be present. Already quoted on this page from Section 11 of FIU-2501 and hoisted into the block rather than re-fetched. What follows on the record. Section 19 of the same regulation was read this date. Notation attaches to the sanction rather than to an academic-misconduct finding as such: Section 16 states that suspension “is recorded on the Respondent’s academic transcript during the period of suspension” and expulsion “permanently.” Section 19 also states that files for suspension or expulsion “shall be permanently retained.” Nothing naming graduate programs, employers, or licensing boards as recipients was located; Section 19.ii defers to federal and state privacy law. Automated pass; no human review is claimed for this entry.
2026-08-31 — Sources re-fetched and compared this date; automated pass, not a human review. Re-fetched and unchanged, every quotation verbatim: both Turnitin AI Indicator training listings (June 14, 2023 and January 13, 2026, same host departments), SCAI's office-overview page (all three quotations incl. the Code's page-one applicability statement), and Regulation FIU-2501 re-read in full from the PDF (Section 6 Cheating definitions, six Section 11 rights, five Section 18 appeal provisions, the Section 19 records/seven-year language, and the Section-16/19 transcript-notation language) — the full-text search was re-run and the Code still contains no occurrence of "artificial intelligence," "AI," "generative," or any comparable term. The Ed Tech Services faculty Turnitin page re-fetched, its "suite of products that help faculty prevent plagiarism" description and Plagiarism-Framework/Feedback-Studio distinction unchanged, still naming no AI-detection feature. Ombudsperson page re-fetched: the INDEPENDENT / IMPARTIAL / CONFIDENTIAL / INFORMAL descriptions and the Graham Center 219 / 305-348-2797 / Ombuds@fiu.edu contacts unchanged. DEAD SOURCE: the SCAI "For Faculty" page (dasa.fiu.edu/.../for-faculty/) now returns FIU's own "Page Not Found"; the SCAI overview no longer links it and no successor was located on dasa.fiu.edu by direct paths or site search. Its two quotations (the program-standards / adjudicate-under-the-Code passage and the Incomplete-grade passage) are retained in section 02 as last verified Aug 23, 2026, labeled in place, with the source-map row marked accordingly and a manual check flagged. Detection inventory re-run across the calendar, Ed Tech Services, SCAI and regulations pages: the Turnitin AI Indicator remains documented in use through trainings, no second detector was located, and no statement on the evidentiary use of AI Indicator scores was found — the section-01 absence stands. No captures requested this pass.
