Two AI-text detectors are confirmed deployed, both instructor-facing only
A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the A-State Knowledge Base's "Authentication and Proctoring" and "Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence" books, the Student Handbook, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning's resources) across astate.edu and kb.astate.edu found both Turnitin's AI-writing feature and a second, named AI-detection platform confirmed deployed — an outcome distinct from the empty inventories this collection more often finds.
The Knowledge Base's own TurnItIn page (page metadata: "Updated 3 months ago by William Murry," no exact date shown; retrieved Oct 4, 2026) states: "A-State has a contract with Turnitin to provide plagiarism checking for assignments in Canvas. In addition to checking papers for plagiarism, TurnItIn can also check student submissions for AI content." The same page limits visibility: "TurnItIn, its features and information are for instructor use only." Source: TurnItIn — A-State Knowledge Base.
The K16 Scaffold AI-Detection page (page metadata: "Updated 3 months ago by William Murry"; retrieved Oct 4, 2026) states: "The university has an account with K16 Solutions that gives us access to their Scaffold AI-Detection system powered by GPTZero. The benefit of this system over Turnitin is that it can compare all the writing a student submits to Canvas, i.e. Quizzes, Assignments, Discussions, etc., not just individual assignments." The "Guidelines and Considerations for the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence" (developed Spring/Summer 2024 by the campus AI Policy Committee; retrieved Oct 4, 2026) confirms campus-wide integration: "The K-16 AI Detection Platform is integrated as a Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) tool within A-State's Canvas LMS platform on all courses to check assignments, quizzes, and discussion boards. Instructors will have access to the administrative platform of both Turnitin and K-16 tools." Sources: K16 Scaffold AI-Detection — A-State Knowledge Base; Guidelines and Considerations for the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence.
The same Guidelines document states a weight caveat: "It is important to note that any AI detection platform should not be used as a sole source of identifying academic dishonesty when considering AI use," and separately that "AI tools can generate false positives (incorrectly identifying honest work as dishonest) and false negatives (failing to catch dishonesty)." The Knowledge Base's own "Limitations of AI Detection Algorithms" page (retrieved Oct 4, 2026) adds, quoting Turnitin's own published statement: "Our AI writing detection model may not always be accurate (it may misidentify both human and AI-generated text), so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student." Source: Limitations of AI Detection Algorithms — A-State Knowledge Base.
The University's AI-use definition reaches into the Student Handbook's own plagiarism rule: "Plagiarism is the act of taking, using, and/or presenting the idea(s), work(s), and/or writing(s) of another person or entity (e.g., artificial intelligence) as one's own," including "any theme, paper, report, computer program, presentation, creative work, or scholarly work of any nature belonging to, or written or created by another, including artificial intelligence, without prior permission of the instructor and proper citations." Source: A-State Student Handbook 2025-2026 (PDF). Separately, Honorlock is confirmed for exam proctoring (live/recorded video monitoring) with no first-party claim that it analyzes writing for AI generation; it is recorded here in the category sweep and not presented as an AI-text detector.
What the Academic Misconduct procedure says about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- Not stated in the sources reviewed. The Procedure for Handling Academic Misconduct Charges describes only a meeting "between the student and an Academic Affairs representative" and, if the student disputes the charge, a hearing before the University Academic Integrity Committee (UAIC); it names no right to bring an advisor, support person, or attorney, and does not address recording. (A separate Student Rights Grievance Procedure — for a student's own complaint about a grade or academic right, not an Academic Misconduct charge — does give its College Hearing Committee a non-participating advisor and a tape-recorded hearing; that is a different process and is not read onto Academic Misconduct cases here.)
- What follows on the record
- Not stated in the sources reviewed. The Handbook's "Non-Academic Student Conduct Records" section sets a seven-year retention period, but states in its own heading and text that it covers non-academic conduct records; no parallel retention period, transcript-notation symbol, or disclosure rule is stated anywhere in the Handbook for an Academic Misconduct finding specifically.
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
The A-State Student Handbook 2025-2026 (retrieved Oct 4, 2026) sets a six-step procedure:
No provision of this procedure states an evidentiary standard such as preponderance of the evidence. On sanctions, course-level penalties the instructor may impose include "[a] reduction of grade for assignment," "[a] failing grade on the assignment," "[r]ewriting or repeat performance of assignment," and "[a] failing grade for the class"; administrative-level penalties, determined by "the student's academic department in consultation with Academic Affairs," range from "[c]ompletion of Education Modules" through "[d]ismissal from a particular program," "[s]uspension from the University for one semester," and "[e]xpulsion from the University." Source: A-State Student Handbook 2025-2026 (PDF). What these quotations mean for any particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Revision history of this page
2026-10-04 — Page created. Cold build; no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (the A-State Knowledge Base's "Authentication and Proctoring" and "Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence" books, the Student Handbook, and CETL's resources) found two AI-text detectors confirmed deployed and instructor-accessible: Turnitin's AI writing report and K16 Solutions' Scaffold AI-Detection (GPTZero-powered), the latter integrated campus-wide across Canvas assignments, quizzes and discussion boards — the first genuinely confirmed-deployed, two-tool finding this pass, distinct from the empty inventories at southalabama and arkansastech built earlier in the same run. TRANSPORT NOTE: kb.astate.edu's TLS certificate (issued by InCommon RSA Server CA 2) is not in the automated fetch tool's trust store and returned "unable to verify the first certificate" to that tool; verified independently as a valid, currently-dated certificate via a direct curl handshake from the Mac host (SSL certificate verify ok), then fetched and read via curl for this page — not a source-side problem, recorded so a future pass does not treat the KB as unreachable. PROCESS SCOPE, THREE DISTINCT HANDBOOK PROCEDURES, KEPT SEPARATE: (1) the Procedure for Handling Academic Misconduct Charges, which this page describes, names no accompaniment right and does not address recording; (2) the Student Rights Grievance Procedure's College Hearing Committee — for a student's own complaint about a grade or an academic right, the opposite direction from a misconduct charge — gives one non-participating advisor and a tape-recorded hearing, quoted in this log only, not on the page, to avoid the two being conflated; (3) the Standards of Student Conduct (non-academic) elsewhere in the Handbook names an "attorney or non-attorney advocate" right unrelated to Academic Misconduct. ABSENCES RECORDED, NOT INFERRED: no evidentiary standard, no accompaniment right, and no recording provision appears anywhere in the Academic Misconduct procedure itself; the Handbook's "Non-Academic Student Conduct Records" retention section (seven years) is scoped by its own heading to non-academic conduct and is not used as a stand-in for an Academic Misconduct retention rule, which is not stated. OFFICE: Academic Affairs & Research Division, Administration Building Rm. 202, 870-972-2030, taken from the Student Handbook's own "Where to Go for Answers" directory rather than from a since-404'd astate.edu/a/academic-affairs-and-research/ URL found in earlier search results; no general office email is published in that directory, and a Provost@AState.edu address surfaced only in a search-engine summary, not on a page read directly, so it is not used. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED AND NOT FOUND: no office titled ombudsperson, ombudsman, or student advocate was located anywhere on astate.edu or kb.astate.edu. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-04).
