UB's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

AI detection is in use at UB

UB's Office of Academic Integrity states (page dated Oct 17, 2025; retrieved Aug 21, 2026):

"UB has an enterprise-wide subscription to Turnitin to help protect integrity in student work. Turnitin has one tool for plagiarism detection and one tool for AI detection. These can be turned on for assignments (not quizzes or other assessment modes) collected in the UB Learns platform." "Like any 'evidence,' these scores are just a starting point. […] While Turnitin has a high reliability rating for AI detection, this is also just a starting point in an instructor's review of work. Any suspected dishonesty must proceed through the consultative resolution process."

Source: Plagiarism and AI-Detection Tools for Assignments — Office of Academic Integrity. UB's teaching center also runs Turnitin AI Indicator workshops for instructors: Turnitin Support — CATT (page dated Dec 3, 2025; retrieved Aug 21, 2026).

On AI-use rules themselves, UB's instructor guidance states there is no universal UB policy about student use of AI tools; instructors set course-level rules. Source: Artificial Intelligence Guidance — Office of Academic Integrity (retrieved Aug 21, 2026). Your syllabus and assignment instructions are therefore among the relevant sources for your own situation.

What UB's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
“Offer the student an opportunity to have a department note-taker […] present or to record the meeting.” — Consultative Resolution Meeting Guidelines, Office of Academic Integrity, instructor-facing and quoted because it describes the process a student experiences (page dated Nov 19, 2025; retrieved Aug 21, 2026) · Consultative Resolution Meeting Guidelines
What follows on the record
“A grade of ‘F’ for the course is recorded on the student’s transcript with notation of academic dishonesty. Upon successful completion of UB’s remediation assignment, the notation is removed.” The same policy adds: “Failure to successfully complete the OAI assignment will result in the notation remaining permanently on the student’s transcript.” — 2026–2027 Undergraduate Catalog, Academic Integrity Policy (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Aug 23, 2026) · UB Undergraduate Catalog — Academic Integrity

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution’s own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

From the Office of Academic Integrity's Consultative Resolution Meeting Guidelines (page dated Nov 19, 2025; retrieved Aug 21, 2026) — instructor-facing, and quoted here because it describes the process a student experiences:

"You must contact the student within 10 academic days of discovering the suspected dishonesty." "Offer the student an opportunity to have a department note-taker […] present or to record the meeting." "If the student has questions about the violation, they have a right to know what it is you've found, otherwise they can't respond to it appropriately." "UB's procedures are based on a standard of 'preponderance,' meaning 'more likely than not.'" "Within 10 academic days of the meeting, submit an incident report and send a letter (through UB email) to the student that details the charge and the sanction. The letter should also refer them to the academic integrity policy and note their right to appeal."

Revision history of this page

2026-08-21 — Page created. All quotations retrieved this date from the buffalo.edu pages linked beside them; source pages carried their own dates of Oct 17, 2025 (detection tools), Nov 19, 2025 (consultative resolution), and Dec 3, 2025 (CATT Turnitin support). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter. Internet Archive captures: to be added.

2026-08-23 — Ombuds capture added this date: UB publishes a Students' Advocate program within Student Conduct that lists “[f]acing academic integrity or dishonesty allegations” among the issues it addresses. It is housed inside the office that administers conduct matters and is not described by UB as independent or confidential, so it is recorded here as an advocacy program rather than an ombuds. The only offices UB titles “ombuds” are in the Jacobs School of Medicine and serve that school. Sources re-fetched and compared this date; automated pass, not a human review.

2026-08-23 — Section 02 now opens with the two questions an adviser raises first. Who may be present. Already quoted in this page’s prose from the Consultative Resolution Meeting Guidelines and hoisted into the block rather than re-fetched; the prose below is unchanged. What follows on the record. Searched and captured this date. The Office of Academic Integrity’s undergraduate procedures page states “transcript” nowhere; near-identical notation language appears in the Graduate School Policy Library, which is graduate-scoped and was therefore not used. The undergraduate-scoped rule is in the UB Undergraduate Catalog, which is what the block cites and what the source map now lists. Two related first-party statements were located but not hoisted: the OAI’s separate internal record — “Students who do not complete remediation or are unsuccessful will have their confidential record maintained in the OAI. These cases shall be reported upon authorized requests for student disciplinary records.” — and UB’s note that certain professions may require a student to disclose a cleared record. UB names a graduate-school application and an employment application as examples of an authorized body; it does not name licensing boards as a recipient of disclosure by the university. The catalog sits behind an AWS WAF challenge that returns an empty body to plain fetches and was read in a browser. Automated pass; no human review is claimed for this entry.

2026-08-23 — Full source re-verification. Re-fetched and compared this date, all unchanged with every quotation verbatim: the OAI detection-tools page (still dated Oct 17, 2025), the Consultative Resolution Meeting Guidelines (still dated Nov 19, 2025), the OAI Artificial Intelligence Guidance page (page metadata dated Oct 17, 2025; the no-universal-policy statement stands, and the page continues to state that preponderance "must include more than just the Turnitin AI-detection report"), the CATT Turnitin Support page (still dated Dec 3, 2025), the OAI Policies index (page metadata dated Aug 19, 2026; links unchanged), the Student Appeals page, the Sanctions Chart, and the Students' Advocate page (still dated Jun 10, 2025; still lists academic integrity allegations among its issues, contact still by form only). Office contact re-confirmed on every fetched page: 24 Capen Hall, 716-645-2111. Detection status re-checked and unchanged: Turnitin AI detection remains available enterprise-wide on assignments. The Undergraduate Catalog page could not be re-fetched this date (its host returns an empty body to plain fetches); its quotations are retained as last verified Aug 23, 2026 by browser read. Internet Archive captures could not be requested this date — the Save Page Now endpoint is unreachable from this run environment; captures remain to be added. Sources re-fetched and compared this date; automated pass, not a human review.

2026-08-30 — Sources re-fetched and compared this date; automated pass, not a human review. Unchanged, quotations verbatim: the OAI Plagiarism and AI-Detection Tools page (still dated Oct 17, 2025; both detection quotations verbatim) and the Consultative Resolution Meeting Guidelines (still dated Nov 19, 2025; all five procedure quotations verbatim). Office contact re-confirmed on both pages: Office of Academic Integrity, 24 Capen Hall, 716-645-2111, academicintegrity@buffalo.edu. Detection status unchanged: Turnitin AI detection remains available enterprise-wide on UB Learns assignments; detection-inventory sweep found no additional AI-text detector (the office's proctoring pages describe exam proctoring, not text detection). Undergraduate Catalog re-verified this date. The 2026–2027 Undergraduate Catalog (catalogs.buffalo.edu) still returns an empty body to plain fetches behind its AWS WAF challenge, but it was read successfully in a browser this date (a first-party capture): both section-02 record quotations are present verbatim — "A grade of 'F' for the course is recorded on the student's transcript with notation of academic dishonesty. Upon successful completion of UB's remediation assignment, the notation is removed." and "Failure to successfully complete the OAI assignment will result in the notation remaining permanently on the student's transcript." This resolves the prior note that the catalog quotations were only retained as last verified. Internet Archive captures still could not be requested — the Save Page Now endpoint is unreachable from this run environment (URL on the environment's fetch blocklist); captures remain to be added.

2026-08-30 — Internet Archive captures requested this date by an automated capture pass; no human review is claimed for this entry. No quotation, date, finding or link above was changed by it. Each capture below was requested through Save Page Now and then confirmed to play back. One source could not be captured: the undergraduate catalog page at catalogs.buffalo.edu, where the AWS WAF challenge answered the archiver rather than the catalog — Save Page Now recorded an HTTP 202 interstitial, not the policy text, so no capture is recorded for it here. The catalog was re-verified first-party by browser in this cohort's 2026-08-30 review; only its capture is outstanding.

2026-09-08 — Sources re-fetched and mechanically re-verified this date; automated pass, not a human review. All 10 recipe sources re-captured (recipe b933e9e69198); capture unchanged since 2026-08-30. Zero fidelity failures on the published page.

2026-09-13 — Editorial review. Carrie Schluter read this page in full against its recorded first-party sources and found no change required. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-13).

2026-10-05 — Sources re-fetched and mechanically re-verified this date; automated re-verification in an attended working session, not a human review. All 10 recipe sources re-captured (recipe 7cd612068b04). Source 8, the Students' Advocate page, has moved onto the same UB page template as the academic-integrity pages, so its capture scope changed from #columns to .ub-content-wrapper; its text is otherwise unchanged in substance. Source 9, the Undergraduate Catalog, is still behind its web firewall to plain fetch and was re-read in the browser this date; the retained text matched. Source 10 has reworded one appeals sentence, which now says the OAI will review all submitted case materials and seek additional information as necessary; this page does not quote that sentence. Zero fidelity failures on the published page.
