CSU San Marcos's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course syllabi and instructor-set rules may also apply, and CSUSM's own catalog says faculty "must include a statement on the use of generative AI tools and devices in the classroom within their syllabus." Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

No AI-text detector is documented as deployed at CSUSM

The 2026–2027 Undergraduate Catalog's Academic Integrity Policy (section revised Jun 1, 2026; retrieved Sep 17, 2026) states, among its faculty guidelines:

"Faculty are prohibited from using AI detection software that has not been approved by IITS/CSUSM for this purpose, as it has not been demonstrated to reliably detect the use of AI and could lead to erroneous identification of the use of AI."

Source: Academic Integrity — 2026–2027 Catalog. This rule bars unapproved detection software and, by naming an "approved" category, leaves open that one could exist — but no page reviewed on csusm.edu, IITS's own generative-AI or software pages, or the Learning & Tutoring Services AI resources names any AI-text detector as currently approved, licensed, or deployed. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (IITS Canvas/Turnitin guide, IITS Generative AI Tools and Software pages, Learning & Tutoring Services AI Toolkit and Academic Integrity pages, the Library's AI faculty LibGuide) found Turnitin confirmed only for similarity/plagiarism checking — "Turnitin assignments allow instructors to collect work from students and have that work checked against other student papers, the Internet, and journals/periodicals/publications. Each student submission receives an Originality Report with the results of these checks" — with no institution statement that its separate AI-writing-detection feature is enabled, disabled, or in use. Honorlock and Respondus were not found documented at CSUSM in this review's category sweep.

02Published procedure

What CSUSM's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
"[Y]ou may ask another person to accompany you to the Educational Conference to serve as an advisor. An advisor is there to provide the student with support, however, may not speak on the student's behalf." A second rule narrows who that advisor may be: "the advisor may not be an attorney except in cases where expulsion is a proposed sanction," and "multiple advisors are not permitted to attend conduct meetings." Recording of the conference is not addressed. — Student Conduct Process FAQ's, Dean of Students Office (no on-page date; retrieved Sep 17, 2026) · Student Conduct Process FAQ's
What follows on the record
"CSU policy states that most disciplinary records must be kept for seven years. Disciplinary records may be kept permanently if a sanction results in a permanent transcript notation (Suspensions of 1 year or more and Expulsions), denial or revocation of a degree, and/or withdrawal of a diploma." A separate answer adds that records "may be released to other individuals or entities upon your written request or in accordance with state and federal law," and that graduate programs "may inquire about a student's conduct record during the application process." — Student Conduct Process FAQ's, Dean of Students Office (no on-page date; retrieved Sep 17, 2026) · Student Conduct Process FAQ's

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

Not stated in the sources reviewed: an evidentiary standard (such as preponderance of the evidence) for a conduct determination. CSUSM's own pages repeatedly point to the CSU Systemwide Student Conduct Procedures (Executive Order 1098) for this and related detail, but that executive order's page at calstate.edu returned an access error to every transport available in this review, so its contents are not reproduced here; this is recorded as a source-access limit, not as an absence in the policy itself.

From the Reporting Academic Dishonesty and Student Conduct Process FAQ pages (Dean of Students Office; no on-page dates; retrieved Sep 17, 2026):

"If you are accused of academic dishonesty (violating the Academic Integrity Policy), you will have an opportunity to speak to your instructor about the allegation. […] Under the University policy on Academic Integrity, the professor may assess an academic outcome ranging from verbal warning to an 'F' in the course. The professor is required to refer the matter to the Dean of Students Office, per CSUSM's Academic Integrity Policy." "The grading process and conduct process are handled separately and one will not inform the other." "If you fail to comply with the request to schedule an Educational Conference, the Student Conduct Administrator may place a hold on your student account prohibiting you from adding or dropping classes or obtaining a transcript or other University documents. You may also be scheduled for a Formal Hearing to resolve your case per the CSU Systemwide Student Conduct Procedures." "Your disciplinary proceedings are confidential and protected by University policy based on federal law."

The Academic Integrity Policy itself (2026–2027 Catalog, section revised Jun 1, 2026) lists the sanction range as "Educational/informational sanctions along with a disciplinary warning," "Disciplinary Probation," "Suspension (CSUSM and CSU system)," "Expulsion (CSUSM and CSU system)," "Withholding of degree," and "Revoking or rescinding of degree/certificate," imposed "by the Dean of Students Office via Student Conduct & Ethical Development." No appeal window is stated on the pages reviewed for a Dean of Students Office determination itself; the catalog notes only that a student disputing an assigned course grade "may refer to the student grievance policy or the course grade appeals policy." Source: Academic Integrity — 2026–2027 Catalog. What these quotations mean for any particular case is for the institution and its process to determine; they are reproduced so you can read the originals in context.

Revision history of this page

2026-09-17 — Page created. Priority A tranche 4, entry 127 (cold build, no prior CANDIDATES.md/procedure-facts.json research to reuse). Detection: a genuinely empty inventory, not a disqualification — no first-party CSUSM page states that any AI-text detector is disabled or recommended against, but none is confirmed deployed either. The 2026–2027 Undergraduate Catalog's Academic Integrity Policy (section revised Jun 1, 2026) bars faculty from "using AI detection software that has not been approved by IITS/CSUSM," implying an approval category without naming any tool as approved. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (IITS Canvas/Turnitin guide, IITS Generative AI Tools and Software pages, LTS AI Toolkit and Academic Integrity pages) confirmed Turnitin deployed for similarity/plagiarism checking only, with no other detector documented. A search-engine-summarized page purporting to be a CSUSM Library LibGuide naming Copyleaks AI Detector as a listed faculty resource could not be verified: the URL it named returns HTTP 404 to a direct fetch and to a browser read alike, and a fresh search found no CSUSM LibGuide by that name or with that content — it is not reproduced here, on the same footing as this project's other documented search-summary false leads. Process captured from the catalog's Academic Integrity Policy and the Dean of Students Office's Reporting Academic Dishonesty and Student Conduct Process FAQ pages: faculty-level academic outcome plus mandatory referral to the Dean of Students Office; Educational Conference with a Student Conduct Administrator; advisor rights (support only, not speaking, attorney barred except where expulsion is proposed, no multiple advisors); Formal Hearing on non-response; seven-year record retention (permanent for suspension of a year or more, expulsion, or degree action). No evidentiary standard is stated on any CSUSM page reviewed; CSUSM's own pages point to CSU Systemwide Student Conduct Procedures (Executive Order 1098) for this and other detail, but calstate.edu returned HTTP 403 to every transport tried in this unattended run (plain curl included), so EO 1098 is cited but not quoted, and its contents are recorded as unreached rather than absent. No appeal window is stated for a Dean of Students Office determination on the pages reviewed; the catalog names only the separate student-grievance/grade-appeal route for grade disputes. OMBUDS FOUND BUT SUSPENDED: CSUSM's Office of University Ombuds page (retrieved Sep 17, 2026) states "Services Suspended until further notice" and "The Ombuds service is currently on hold," with no other descriptive text remaining on the page, so it is recorded in the docket with that status rather than presented as currently available; no other advocacy office was located in this review's sweep. Office: Dean of Students Office, Administrative Building 1200, 760-750-4935, dos@csusm.edu — captured from the office's own contact block. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Traces to tools/packets/csusm-packet.txt with zero failures; gated in tools/fidelity-gate.txt. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-17).
