DePaul University.
- Detection status
- Turnitin's AI Detector via Originality Check in D2L, confirmed active; turned off for all DePaul Turnitin accounts Sep 28, 2023, turned back on Jan 2024; students cannot see the report; framed as a conversation-starter, not a strict enforcement tool
- Office in these sources
- Academic Integrity Office — no phone or address stated in these sources · academicintegrity@depaul.edu · offices.depaul.edu/academic-affairs/faculty-resources/academic-integrity
- Ombuds or advocacy office
- No student ombuds office located. DePaul's University Ombuds Office, under the Division of Mission and Ministry, describes itself as a resource "for faculty and staff" and, per DePaul's own reporting, paused providing those services as of July 1, 2023; the office's own program page returned no content in this review. No DePaul page in this review describes an ombuds or independent advocacy office serving students.

DePaul's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted in brief and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — the Academic Integrity Policy is the governing text, the Teaching Commons guidance is faculty-facing, and individual course syllabi may add rules. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates or deadlines are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.
AI detection is in use at DePaul, after a 2023 pause
The Teaching Commons' "AI Detectors" guide (Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, retrieved Sep 11, 2026; no page-own date shown) states DePaul's current tool and its history. Brief excerpts:
The same guide states who can see a result and how the tool is meant to be used: "Students are unable to see the Turnitin AI writing detection indicator and report, even if they are able to view the Turnitin Originality Report. Faculty will need to download the AI writing detection report as a PDF in order to share results with students," and "Turnitin's AI Detector should be seen as a starting point for a conversation rather than a strict enforcement tool." On accuracy: "Turnitin's AI detection has a 1% false positive rate for documents that contain 20% or more of AI-generated writing, and may miss about 15% of AI written text in a document. The tool has a 4% sentence-level false positive rate, and sentence-level false positives are more likely in documents that contain a mix of human and AI generated writing."
Named-vendor and category sweep of depaul.edu found no other AI-writing detector documented; Turnitin's own similarity/originality checking is the only other tool named alongside it, and the two run through the same D2L integration.

What DePaul's own documents say about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- "If you are going to ask your DePaul advisor/faculty/staff member to accompany you for support, ask several weeks in advance to ensure their availability. Also, email academicintegrity@depaul.edu and give the person's name and contact information." — "Preparing for an Academic Integrity Hearing" (Academic Affairs, retrieved Sep 11, 2026). Recording is not addressed in the sources reviewed. · Preparing for an Academic Integrity Hearing (PDF)
- What follows on the record
- The Board's sanctions are defined by whether they reach the transcript: a "Letter of Reprimand without Transcript Notation…will not result in a note on the student's transcript," while a "Letter of Reprimand with Transcript Notation…will result in a note on the student's transcript," and Suspension, Program Dismissal, Dismissal, and Degree Revocation each "automatically results in transcript notation." Records: "The Academic Integrity Office will keep materials related to the academic integrity violation in accordance with the University's Records Management Policy." — Academic Integrity Policy §§4.2, 6.4 (passed by Faculty Council Sep 13, 2023; approved by the Provost Sep 19, 2023; retrieved Sep 11, 2026). Disclosure to graduate programs, employers, or licensing boards is not stated in the sources reviewed. · Academic Integrity Policy (PDF)
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
Filing and notice, course-related violations (Academic Integrity Policy §5, same PDF): an instructor who imposes a sanction "must formally notify the student using the Online Notification Process via Campus Connection…before the end of the third week of classes in the term following the quarter in which the violation occurred." The faculty "Filing a Violation" page describes the mechanics: "The violation is filed in the form of a letter of notification to the student," and "[o]nce the instructor has submitted the violation, it will be sent via email to the student, the instructor, the associate dean and to Academic Integrity."
A sanctioned student "is entitled to request a hearing for the AIB to review the sanctions imposed by his/her instructor…if the student believes that the alleged violation did not occur or the sanction is excessive or inappropriate" (§5.2.4). The hearing panel "will consist of three faculty AIB members and two student members" (Hearings page, retrieved Sep 11, 2026). Neither the policy nor the hearing pages reviewed state an evidentiary standard (such as a preponderance-of-the-evidence rule) for finding a violation; that is recorded here as not stated rather than assumed.
Appeal: "Students must submit appeal requests to the Academic Integrity Office (academicintegrity@depaul.edu) within 5 days of being notified of the Board sanction," on one of three stated grounds — substantial procedural error, new evidence, or an excessive or inappropriate sanction (§8.2–8.3). "Students who appeal are subject to no greater penalties than those which the student previously received," and "[t]he outcome of the appeal represents the final outcome for a case and cannot, itself, be appealed" (§§8.5, 8.7). What any of this means for a particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Revision history of this page
2026-09-11 — Page created. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (LMS/D2L integration pages, Teaching Commons guidance, the Academic Integrity Policy, faculty-resources pages) found one AI-writing detector: Turnitin's AI Detector via Originality Check in D2L, currently enabled. Captured first-party this date: the Teaching Commons "AI Detectors" guide (all section-01 quotations), the Academic Integrity Policy PDF passed by Faculty Council 9/13/2023 (all section-02 policy quotations, sections 4.2, 5, 6.4, 8.2–8.3, 8.5, 8.7), the "Filing a Violation" page (notification-routing quotation), the "Hearings" page (panel-composition quotation), and "Preparing for an Academic Integrity Hearing" (PDF; the accompaniment quotation). The 2016 predecessor policy PDF was located and read but not used as a source once the 2023 revision was found current. DePaul is a private institution: this page quotes brief excerpts and links originals; it republishes nothing in full.
2026-09-11 — Recorded as not stated in the sources reviewed, rather than assumed: an explicit evidentiary standard (e.g., preponderance of the evidence) for a hearing panel's finding of a violation; whether recording a hearing is permitted; and disclosure of a finding to graduate programs, employers, or licensing boards. Ombuds/advocacy search: DePaul's University Ombuds Office is described elsewhere on depaul.edu as serving "faculty and staff," and the office's own Mission and Ministry program page returned no content in this review; no office serving students in an ombuds or independent-advocacy capacity was located. No detector other than Turnitin's AI Detector was found in either sweep. Internet Archive captures not yet requested in this pass; to be added.
