01Detection status

AI detection is in use at EIU, through Turnitin

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the Faculty Development and Innovation Center's Turnitin and AI-toolkit pages, and the Student Conduct Code below) across eiu.edu found Turnitin's AI writing indicator confirmed enabled, and no other named vendor anywhere on eiu.edu.

The Faculty Development and Innovation Center's "Guidance on Adapting to AI and Academic Integrity" (dated 25-July-2023; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) states that on April 4, 2023:

"Turnitin released its AI detection as an integrated portion of Turnitin Similarity; EIU has enabled this function in Turnitin. Turnitin will compute a percentage score for its AI detection which indicates the amount of qualifying text within the submission that Turnitin's AI writing detection model determines might have been generated by AI. This percentage is not necessarily the percentage of the entire submission - if text within the submission was not considered long-form prose text, it will not be included." "Does the AI Indicator automatically feed a student's paper into a repository? No, it does not. There is no separate repository for AI writing detection. ... Instructors retain the ability to choose whether to add their student papers into the repository or not." "The final decision on whether any misconduct has occurred rests with the reviewer/instructor. Turnitin does not make a determination of misconduct, rather it provides data for the educators to make an informed decision based on their academic and institutional policies."

The guidance also names a specific, documented limit on the score: "False positives happen – Turnitin is not a perfect detection system," citing "lists without a lot of structural variation, text that literally repeats itself, or text that has been paraphrased without developing novel ideas" as sources of false flags, and notes that "In shorter documents where there are only a few hundred words, the prediction will be mostly 'all or nothing.'" It recommends engaging the student in conversation rather than acting on the score alone, and separately recommends instructors "advocate for and advise students to use the EIU Writing Center." EIU's own Turnitin page (no on-page date; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) confirms the same indicator from the product side: "Turnitin added an AI writing indicator to the Similarity Report. It shows an overall percentage of the document that AI writing tools, such as ChatGPT, may have generated. The indicator further links to a report which highlights the text segments that the Turnitin model predicts were written by AI." EIU's subscription also includes Feedback Studio, Similarity, Originality, Draft Coach, and PeerMark; none of these is described as a second, separate AI-text detector. What the Student Conduct Code says about how cases proceed

Who may be present
The Student Conduct Code (effective Fall 2026) states: "The accused student may be accompanied by one advisor of their choice. The advisor may attend the hearing with the student to counsel them, but not act as spokesperson or vocal advocate." On recording: "An audio recording will be made of all hearings. The recording is the university's property and will be retained as part of the student conduct file. The accused student may review the recording after making a request to the Dean of Students Office. Personal transcripts or recordings may not be made at any hearing."
What follows on the record
"Disciplinary sanctions shall not be made part of the student's permanent academic record, except in the case of separation from the institution, where a suspension will be noted on the transcript with 'Administrative Suspension' and an expulsion will be noted on the transcript with 'Administrative Expulsion.'" Records are otherwise "destroyed after seven years from the time of the last entry, except in cases involving separation from the university, restrictions on reenrollment, or if the Dean of Students or their designee determines there is a continuing interest in retaining the record."

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

The Student Conduct Code (effective Fall 2026; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) covers academic misconduct as "Standard I": "Eastern students observe the highest principles of academic integrity." Plagiarism is defined to include AI use by name: "Plagiarism is the use, without adequate attribution, of another person's words or thoughts as if they were ones' own (i.e., Artificial Intelligence, ChatGPT, Grammarly)." The FDIC's own AI guidance confirms the routing: "Concerns with academic misconduct can be adjudicated through the process established by the EIU Dean of Students," and the Code itself lists "faculty members in the case of academic misconduct occurring in their classes" among the staff to whom informal resolution may be referred in the first instance; "the instructor may impose a reduced or failing grade for the assignment or course in addition to such sanctions as may be imposed by a hearing officer or panel."

"The accused student may request, or the Dean of Students may require, that the allegation be resolved at a formal administrative hearing provided by a hearing officer, or by the University Student Standards Board." "Determination of violations shall be made based on the preponderance of evidence. Decisions by the hearing board or panel shall be by majority vote." "A written appeal of the formal hearing process decision or sanction may be submitted by the student to the Vice president for Student Affairs. An appeal will be accepted only if it is submitted within seven calendar days from the date of the decision letter" on one of four stated grounds: "A substantial procedural error," "New information of a substantive nature not reasonably available to presenters at the original hearing," "Substantiated bias on the part of a hearing officer or panel member," or "The sanction imposed is substantially disproportionate to the severity of the violation."

Sanctions "may be imposed upon any student found to have violated the Student Conduct Code," ranging from "University Reprimand" through "Separation from the University" ("Suspension is the disciplinary separation of the student from the university for a minimum specified period of time less than five years. Expulsion is a permanent disciplinary separation of the student from the university."), with revocation of a conferred degree "recommended to the Board of Trustees in instances where conferral of the degree preceded the determination of significant misconduct or academic fraud." Revision history of this page

2026-10-15 — Page created. Cold build; no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (the FDIC's Turnitin and AI-toolkit pages, and the Student Conduct Code) found Turnitin's AI writing indicator CONFIRMED ENABLED — "EIU has enabled this function in Turnitin" — and no other named vendor anywhere on eiu.edu. DETECTOR CONFIRMED, NOT A DISQUALIFICATION QUESTION: this page documents a deployed tool rather than an empty inventory. EVIDENTIARY WEIGHT QUOTED DIRECTLY: the FDIC guidance states the score is not a misconduct determination and the final decision rests with the instructor; this is the institution's own stated limit on the tool, not the page's characterization. PROCESS: the Student Conduct Code (effective Fall 2026) governs both academic and non-academic misconduct under one hearing process; Standard I covers academic integrity and names AI tools directly in its plagiarism definition. The FDIC guidance's statement that academic misconduct is "adjudicated through the process established by the EIU Dean of Students" was confirmed against the Code itself, which also authorizes direct instructor-level grade sanctions for academic misconduct ahead of or alongside any formal hearing. RECORDING ADDRESSED BOTH WAYS: the Code requires an institutional audio recording of every hearing (student may request to review it) while separately barring the student's own personal recording or transcript — both halves are quoted rather than only the permissive one. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED AND NOT FOUND: no office titled ombudsperson, ombudsman, or student advocate was located anywhere on eiu.edu in this review. OFFICE CONTACT: the Code's own "For more information" block names the Dean of Students Office at Human Services Building, 1st Floor, with phone and email, and separately gives a mailing address at a "Health Services Building" location — both are the Code's own text; the docket uses the office's named building, phone, and email rather than the mailing address, which is not described as the office's physical location. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-15).
