Empire State University.

- Turnitin is documented only for similarity/plagiarism checking in Brightspace assignments, plus a separate faculty-only "Plagiarism Comparison Tool"; no Empire State page located in this review states that an AI-writing detector is enabled, disabled, or in use
- Office in these sources
- Office of Academic Affairs — no dedicated academic-integrity office is named; the Academic Integrity Policy states that documentation of an alleged violation "is filed with the Office of Academic Affairs." No office-specific phone or email is published. General university contact: 2 Union Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 · 800-847-3000

Empire State University's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course syllabi and instructor expectations may also apply, and the Academic Integrity Policy itself requires that "[a]ny use of generative AI tools must be done with instructor approval and in alignment with instructor expectations communicated in the course syllabus." Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.
No AI-writing detector is documented; Turnitin covers similarity only
Empire State's IT help desk publishes three Turnitin articles under its Brightspace knowledge base, none naming an AI-writing feature. The Turnitin: Similarity Scores and Reports article (no on-page revision date beyond a 2023 footer copyright; retrieved Oct 11, 2026) describes only text-matching:
Source: Turnitin: Similarity Scores and Reports. A companion article describes a separate "Faculty TurnItIn Portal" for checking discussion posts and emailed submissions outside Brightspace assignments, again on a similarity basis only: "Turnitin can only be used for assignments in a Brightspace course. If you would like to check student work submitted in discussions or by email, you may use the Faculty Turnitin Portal." Source: Faculty TurnItIn Portal (retrieved Oct 11, 2026).
Separately, the university's "Breaches of Academic Integrity" page closes with an unnamed tool: "Note: SUNY Empire faculty and staff have access to a Plagiarism Comparison Tool (login; faculty and staff only)." The page does not name Turnitin or any other vendor in that sentence, and does not say whether this is the same product described in the help-desk articles above. Source: Breaches of Academic Integrity (no on-page date; retrieved Oct 11, 2026).
A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin's AI writing indicator specifically, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) found no hit on sunyempire.edu beyond the similarity-only Turnitin material above. A category sweep of the IT help desk's knowledge-base categories, the library's subject-guide directory and Faculty & Staff Toolbox, and the Academic Integrity Policy itself found no AI-text detector named in any direction — no statement that one is enabled, and no statement that one is disabled or recommended against.
What the Academic Integrity Policy says about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- "The student has the right to have an advisor present at the academic integrity hearing." The advisor "may privately consult with and advise the student during the proceedings but may not directly participate on behalf of the student." Student recording of the hearing is not addressed; the policy instead has a University Services representative on the Academic Integrity Committee who "provides an accurate record of the meeting" as the committee's own official minutes. — Academic Integrity Policy (100.006, effective 9/2/2025) · Academic Integrity Policy
- What follows on the record
- A formal academic integrity warning "remains active on the student's academic record" for a period set by the university's records retention policy. "Cases involving Academic Integrity Suspension will be retained permanently" and "may only be expunged upon successful application to the provost or designee(s)." "Case files involving Academic Integrity Expulsion will be retained permanently." — Academic Integrity Policy (100.006) · Academic Integrity Policy
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
From the Academic Integrity Policy (Policy No. 100.006; effective date 9/2/2025; sponsor, Office of Academic Affairs; retrieved Oct 11, 2026), on how a case begins and is decided:
The policy sets fixed windows at each step: the referring party must raise a concern with the student in writing within 10 business days of discovery; on referral to the AIC, "[t]he dean or designee will notify the student in writing within five business days"; and "[t]he AIC hearing should occur within no more than 20 business days of receiving the referral." On appeal, "[t]he student may submit an appeal in writing to the provost within 5 business days of transmittal of an AIC decision," and the policy states "[t]he provost's decision is final." The policy separately addresses coursework AI use directly: "Any use of generative AI tools must be done with instructor approval and in alignment with instructor expectations communicated in the course syllabus," and "[a]ny work incorporating information from a generative AI tool must be acknowledged" — failure to acknowledge "may violate the Academic Integrity policy." The policy's own link to a separate "Academic Integrity Procedures" document is rendered on the page as literal placeholder text, "(LINK)," rather than a working link, and that document was not otherwise located; nothing on this page relies on it. Revision history of this page
2026-10-11 — Page created. All quotations retrieved this date from the sunyempire.edu and help.sunyempire.edu pages linked beside them; the Academic Integrity Policy carries its own "Effective Date: 9/2/2025" with a blank review-date field, and neither the Breaches of Academic Integrity page nor the two help-desk Turnitin articles display an on-page revision date (the help-desk articles carry only a 2023 footer copyright). Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator specifically, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) found only Turnitin, and only for similarity/plagiarism checking — no page states in either direction whether an AI-writing indicator is enabled, disabled, or in use, and the inventory is recorded as empty for AI-text detection specifically. Category sweep covered the IT help desk's knowledge-base categories (Accessibility, Early College Program Resources, Faculty and Staff Resources, IT Support Resources, Student Resources), the library's full guide directory (subjectguides.sunyempire.edu/guides) and Faculty & Staff Toolbox, and the Academic Integrity Policy itself; none named an AI-text detector in either direction. A separate, unnamed "Plagiarism Comparison Tool" noted on the Breaches of Academic Integrity page (faculty/staff login only) is recorded in section 01 without assuming it is the same product as the help-desk Turnitin material, because no page states that. Ombuds/advocacy search ("ombuds," "ombudsperson," "student advocate," "student advocacy") found no eligible office; a "Student Service Contacts for Problem Resolution" page referencing a neutral-investigator role (not an advocate) was indexed under three different sunyempire.edu/esc.edu subdomains, but every one of those addresses returned HTTP 404 on a direct, dated fetch this pass, so it is not cited above and was not relied on for this finding either way. The policy's own cross-reference to a separate "Academic Integrity Procedures" document renders as literal placeholder text "(LINK)" on the live page rather than a working link; that document was not located elsewhere and nothing on this page relies on it. Office contact: the policy names only "the Office of Academic Affairs" as the office documentation is filed with, and no page reviewed publishes a dedicated phone or email for that office under this name; the docket therefore uses the general university line. Deliberately not used: the help-desk's "Using TurnItIn in Brightspace Assignments" article, read in the category sweep but adding nothing about AI detection beyond the two quoted articles. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-11).
