Excelsior's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course and assignment instructions may also apply, and Excelsior's own policy leaves some determinations, such as whether a first violation counts as a "teachable moment," to the instructor or department chair. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

AI-generated work is prohibited; two named detection services are authorized

Excelsior's Academic Integrity Policy states (no on-page date; retrieved Sep 7, 2026):

"Excelsior has the right to determine the originality and authenticity of a student's academic work (e.g., papers, projects, discussion posts). Reports by a designated service such as Turnitin and Authorship may be used as part of regular course instruction and as evidence in an Excelsior investigation of academic integrity policy violations and in support of Excelsior disciplinary action(s)."

The same policy defines submitting AI-generated work as academic dishonesty in its own right, separate from plagiarism generally: "submitting assignments generated by artificial intelligence platforms unless explicitly allowed in the assignment's directions." Its plagiarism definition adds: "Using artificial intelligence in lieu of one's own work falls under this umbrella as well, unless explicitly allowed in the assignment's directions." Neither passage names which of the two designated services — Turnitin or Authorship — screens for AI generation specifically, or describes an AI-writing-indicator feature by name.

Separately, Excelsior's Support Resources page describes a required student-facing check (retrieved Sep 7, 2026): "Improve your citation skills and avoid plagiarism by using the antiplagiarism tool located within your course. It's easy to use and you can use it as often as you like before the deadline of your assignment. Major writing assignments require the use of this tool." The page does not name this tool or say whether it is the same service as "Turnitin and Authorship" above.

A named-vendor sweep of excelsior.edu (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep of LMS/integration, graduate/thesis, exam-proctoring, IT-catalogue, teaching-center and library pages found no other detector and no page enabling or naming a Turnitin AI-writing-indicator feature specifically. Excelsior's own exam-registration materials describe PearsonVUE OnVUE as the proctoring service for its standardized UExcel exams; that is exam proctoring, not AI-text detection, and is not evidence about the services named in the policy above.

What Excelsior's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
Not stated in the sources reviewed. The Academic Integrity Policy was searched for language on a support person, adviser, note-taker, observer, or recording of any meeting, and none was found.
What follows on the record
On the University's administrative authority following a violation, the policy states it may "Permanently annotate a student's record to reflect academic withdrawal by the University in response to the student's violation of this policy" and "Notify educational institutions, licensing or certification boards, employers, or others, who have previously received a transcript or similar certification, (e.g., Letter of Completion (LOC), Letter of Qualification (LOQ)) of any action taken by the University." (No on-page date; retrieved Sep 7, 2026.) · Academic Integrity — Excelsior University

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

Excelsior's Academic Integrity Policy sorts violations into four increasing tiers, quoted here in full (no on-page date; retrieved Sep 7, 2026):

"A. TEACHABLE MOMENTS" "In some cases, a student may unintentionally or unknowingly commit a minor academic integrity violation, for example, minor issues of improper paraphrasing, citation, missing quotation marks, and/or minor self-plagiarism incidents. This also includes a first-time use of artificial intelligence to generate work unless explicitly allowed in the assignment's directions. The decision of whether an incident should be considered a 'teachable moment' is at the discretion of the instructor and/or department chair." "B. TYPE 1 INCIDENTS" "Repeat instances of poor writing or citation 'teachable moments,' including repeated use of artificial intelligence to complete assignments, that require more intense guidance, instruction, and intervention." "C. TYPE 2 INCIDENTS" "Intentional plagiarism in student work. For example, this can include a copied passage or passages from another source in a paper, presentation, or other media submission without proper paraphrasing, citations, and/or use of quotations." "D. TYPE 3 INCIDENTS" "Serious infractions of the academic integrity policy including:" "Type 3A: Multiple documented plagiarism and/or artificial intelligence violations." "Type 3B: Cheating, contract cheating, fabrication, falsification, and/or collusion."

Sanctions are tiered with the incident type. For Teachable Moments, Type 1 and Type 2 incidents, the policy lists, as options that "may include some or all of the following":

"Feedback and resources from the instructor" "Required completion of CCS101" "A grade of 0 on the assignment or exam with the opportunity to revise and resubmit the work with corrections for a new grade" "A grade of 0 on the assignment or exam without the opportunity to resubmit"

For Type 3 incidents, the corresponding list is:

"A grade of 0 on the assignment or exam without the opportunity to resubmit" "Failure of the course" "Withdrawal from the University" "Revocation of an Excelsior University degree"

No evidentiary standard or burden-of-proof test is stated anywhere in the policy.

On appeals, the policy states: "Student appeals related to Teachable Moments, Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 non-dismissal incidents must be submitted in writing via email to the dean of the school in which the incident occurred within 30 days of the initial decision," naming College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (clas@excelsior.edu) and College of Nursing and Health Sciences (cnhs@excelsior.edu); "The dean will render a final decision on the appeal within 21 business days of receipt," and for these tiers "The dean's decision on a teachable moment, Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 non-dismissal incident appeal is final." Separately: "Student appeals related to Type 3 incidents that result in dismissal or degree revocation should be submitted in writing to the Office of the Provost within 30 days of the initial decision," and those appeals "are escalated to Excelsior's Academic Integrity and Appeals Council."

Revision history of this page

2026-09-07 — Page created. First-party material captured from two excelsior.edu pages: the Academic Integrity Policy (detection-services clause, AI-generation prohibition, four-tier incident classification, sanctions, administrative authority, appeal path and windows, transcript/disclosure language) and the Support Resources page (Ombudsperson Office section and the required antiplagiarism self-check tool). Neither page displays an on-page publication or last-updated date; both were retrieved this date and both quote a "© 2026 Excelsior University" footer. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (LMS integrations, graduate/thesis workflows, exam proctoring, IT service catalogue, teaching-center and library guidance) came back empty beyond the two services the policy itself names ("Turnitin and Authorship") and PearsonVUE OnVUE, which is exam proctoring for standardized UExcel exams and not text detection. No page names or confirms a Turnitin AI-writing-indicator feature specifically, and no page states whether the required "antiplagiarism tool" is the same service as Turnitin or Authorship — both absences are recorded as such in sections 01 and 02, not resolved by inference. No first-party statement was found addressing who may accompany a student to a meeting or whether recording is permitted; no evidentiary standard (preponderance or otherwise) is published. Disqualification check: not disqualified — the policy documents Turnitin and Authorship as designated services currently used both in course instruction and as investigation evidence, with no statement disabling or recommending against either. Internet Archive captures: to be added. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-08).
