Reproduced from the institution's own pages quoted below — potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case.
IUP's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course syllabi, department-level rules, and (for graduate students) Graduate School policy may also apply, and the IT Support page quoted in section 01 is written for instructors configuring Brightspace, not for students. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.
Turnitin's AI-writing check is available, with its own accuracy flagged as unresolved
IUP's IT Support Center states (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Oct 12, 2026):
Source: Plagiarism Prevention — IT Support. No page located in this review states what weight, if any, a Turnitin AI-writing score carries once a case reaches the Academic Integrity Policy's referral process described in section 02 below.
Separately from the detection tool, IUP's Academic Integrity Policy (approved 3.7.2023) names AI-generated work as its own violation category, regardless of whether a detector flags it: "AI generated work is not reflective of a student's own understanding and effort and, thus, is not acceptable, unless authorized specifically by the instructor/administrator." Its definition of plagiarism is written to cover both: "Plagiarism applies to any type of source, whether published or unpublished, human or AI generated, and to any type of assignment, whether written, verbal, or otherwise." Source: Academic Integrity Policy (.docx) (approved 3.7.2023; retrieved Oct 12, 2026).
Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) found only Turnitin as a currently deployed tool. Respondus surfaced twice, neither current and campus-wide: IT Support's own news page lists "Respondus" among "Software Titles to be Discontinued," ending Aug. 1, 2020 — Software Titles to be Discontinued (dated May 29, 2020; retrieved Oct 12, 2026) — and the Eberly College of Science, Health, and Technology's Nursing undergraduate handbook separately describes "Kaplan's Respondus Lockdown Browser" as a requirement inside Kaplan's own third-party testing platform for proctored exam reviews, a program-specific use of Kaplan's tool rather than an IUP-deployed detector or an AI-writing check. Category sweep (IT Support's academic-services and IT-policy pages, the Center for Teaching Excellence's academic-integrity pages, the Provost's academic-integrity pages, and IUP's AI policy hub at itsupportcenter/ai) found no other named AI-text detector, proctoring tool, or exam-integrity system; IUP's 2026 updates to its IT Acceptable Use, Information Protection, and Data Classification policies address data handling for AI tools generally and do not name a detection product.
No system-level Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) position on AI-writing detection was located on passhe.edu in this review; IUP's detection status above is sourced entirely to IUP's own pages, and this is the collection's first PASSHE-system build.
What IUP's Academic Integrity Policy says about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- "The student and instructor/administrator have the right to bring an advisor to the hearing. Advisors may only consult privately with the instructor/administrator or student." Recording of a hearing is not addressed either way. — Academic Integrity Policy (approved 3.7.2023; retrieved Oct 12, 2026)
- What follows on the record
- "Individual course withdrawals initiated by a student before resolution of an academic integrity case will not remain on the transcript if the student is found to have violated the policy and the resolution of the referral is the assignment of a grade. If the student has withdrawn and has been found to have violated this policy, another grade, including an 'F,' may be placed on the transcript. If the student has withdrawn and has not been found to have violated this policy, the 'W' will remain on the transcript." Beyond this withdrawal-conversion rule, the policy does not itself state a general transcript notation, a retention period, or any third-party disclosure for an academic-integrity violation. — Academic Integrity Policy (approved 3.7.2023; retrieved Oct 12, 2026)
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
From IUP's Academic Integrity Policy (approved 3.7.2023; retrieved Oct 12, 2026):
The policy lists three grounds for that appeal: a denial of a fair and reasonable hearing, new evidence not presented at the original hearing for an acceptable reason, and an excessively harsh sanction. Sanctions range from a single grade reduction through disciplinary probation, involuntary withdrawal from part of a program, suspension, expulsion, and rescission of a conferred degree; a student with a prior violation on record is heard by the Academic Integrity Board rather than a department chair alone. Revision history of this page
2026-10-12 — Page created. Cold build (no prior CANDIDATES.md/procedure-facts research); first PASSHE-system entry in the collection, so a system-level check was run first and came back empty — no AI-detection position was located on passhe.edu, and this page's detection status is sourced to IUP's own pages only. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) found only Turnitin, documented by IT Support as available for AI-generated-content checking on Brightspace assignments (not discussions or short-answer quizzes), with the source's own language flagging the detection tools' accuracy as "controversial" and under discussion within ACPAC. Category sweep (IT Support academic-services and IT-policy pages, Center for Teaching Excellence, Provost academic-integrity pages, and the itsupportcenter/ai hub) found no other detector, proctoring tool, or exam-integrity system; IUP's August 2026 AI-related updates to its IT Acceptable Use, Information Protection, and Data Classification policies address data handling generally and do not name a detection product. Respondus appeared twice and neither use is current/campus-wide: a 2020-05-29 IT Support news item lists it among software titles discontinued effective Aug. 1, 2020, and the Nursing undergraduate handbook (dated May 5, 2026) separately requires "Kaplan's Respondus Lockdown Browser" inside Kaplan's own third-party NCLEX-prep testing platform — a program-specific use of Kaplan's tool, not an IUP-deployed detector and not an AI-writing check, so it is recorded here rather than built into the docket. Not a step-2 disqualification: no page states the AI-writing check is disabled or recommended against; the only caution is the accuracy note quoted in section 01. Process captured from the Academic Integrity Policy (.docx, approved 3.7.2023) and cross-checked against the HTML Referral Procedure summary, which is consistent in substance and deadlines (10-day windows throughout) but does not restate the evidentiary-standard sentence quoted in section 02. Accompany row found in the policy itself: advisor right stated, consult-privately restriction quoted; recording of a hearing is not addressed in either source read for this page. Record row PARTIAL: only the withdrawal-conversion rule is stated; the policy names no general transcript notation, retention period, or third-party disclosure for a sustained violation, and that absence is stated rather than assumed. Office: Division of Academic Affairs / Office of the Provost, Sutton Hall Room 205, 724-357-2219, with academic-integrity questions directed by name to Holly Olexo (724-357-3001, olexo@iup.edu); no separate academic-integrity-specific department email is published. No ombuds or student-advocacy office is named on IUP's own pages: a search for "ombudsperson" returned nothing, and the "Student Advocacy and Outreach" role in University College was read directly and describes retention/success support (foster-care support, enrollment-cancellation guidance) with no first-party statement that it serves academic-integrity cases, assists all students regardless of program, or is independent, confidential, or impartial — so the docket records the absence rather than presenting that role as an ombuds equivalent. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-12).
