Detection status
"AI detection tools integrated into Canvas" are named in the Board-approved Academic Integrity Policy itself as one form of evidence faculty may use; the policy does not name a specific vendor, and Turnitin is separately confirmed as the plagiarism-checking tool available through Canvas

Kean's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course syllabi set course-specific AI rules, and Kean's own policy says so. 01Detection status

AI detection is named in the policy itself, as one evidentiary tool among several

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the Academic Integrity Policy, the Learning Commons support pages, and the University Libraries' AI guide) found the Academic Integrity Policy itself naming AI detection tools, and Turnitin confirmed separately as the Canvas-integrated plagiarism tool.

Kean's Academic Integrity Policy (approved by the Kean University Board of Trustees on September 16, 2024; retrieved Sep 25, 2026) states, under "Artificial Intelligence Expectations":

"Faculty may use various tools and methods to ensure appropriate use of AI, including: comparisons with in-class or other written work, AI detection tools integrated into Canvas, demonstrated mastery of learning via the ability to orally present/discuss content, and other relevant forms of evidence."

Source: Academic Integrity Policy. The policy names no specific detector by product name in this sentence. Kean's own Learning Commons support guidance confirms Turnitin's presence separately, for plagiarism checking: "For any Kean University faculty member who would like to use the Turnitin plagiarism detection tool outside of the Canvas learning management system, please submit a ticket with Kean's Office of Information Technology (IT)" — stated as available inside Canvas by default, with a separate ticket process only for using it outside Canvas; the page does not describe an AI-writing-specific feature of Turnitin by name. Source: Does Kean University provide access to Turnitin? — LibAnswers (last updated Aug 14, 2026). Your syllabus is a relevant source here too: the policy states faculty "specify in their course syllabi how AI and GenAI may be used in their classes," and these rules "may vary from course to course."

02Published process

What Kean's own Academic Integrity Policy says about how cases proceed

Who may be present
Not stated for the instructor-level Level 1-2 conference or the Dean-level review of Level 3-4 violations. At a University Appeals Board hearing specifically: "An advisor is a person permitted to be present throughout any hearing proceedings to support and/or assist the student. The advisor may not address the Board or otherwise participate... A student may have one advisor present during the hearing." No provision on recording a meeting or hearing was located. — Academic Integrity Policy (approved Sep 16, 2024; retrieved Sep 25, 2026) · Academic Integrity Policy
What follows on the record
"Disciplinary records will be maintained for a period of seven years after the last year of the student's attendance at the University... Records involving suspensions, expulsions and appeals are kept permanently." A Level 3 sanction of suspension carries "a notation of 'disciplinary suspension' placed in a student's academic file." No evidentiary standard such as preponderance of the evidence is stated anywhere in the policy. — Academic Integrity Policy (retrieved Sep 25, 2026) · Academic Integrity Policy

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

Kean's policy sorts violations into four escalating levels, each with a "recommended sanction," and routes the process accordingly (retrieved Sep 25, 2026):

"Violations of Level 2, 3, or 4 of the University's Academic Integrity Policy must be reported on an Academic Integrity Violations Report form (AIVR)... The responsibility for demonstrating the existence of a violation shall be upon the faculty member bringing the charges." "In the case of Level 2 violations, the instructor will meet with the student to address the charge, including the level of violation and recommended sanction, and impose the sanction for Level 2 violations." "All student/instructor conferences about Level 3 and 4 violations will be informational only... the instructor is not responsible for determining the sanction or action that will be taken in response to these violations, but may make a recommendation to the College Dean (or designee)... The College Dean (or designee) will then review the incident and apply a sanction." "Once a sanction has been imposed at Level 3 or 4, the student may file a written appeal of the charge or sanction to the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs within 10 calendar days of the date of notification... The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs will refer all appeals of Levels 3 and 4 violations to the University Appeals Board (UAB) for hearing or mediation." "The decisions of the UAB are considered final and may be appealed by the student only on the grounds of alleged procedural or substantive error. Appeals will be directed in writing to the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and must be filed within ten (10) business days of the decision issued by the University Appeals Board."

All Level 1 and Level 2 appeals instead "proceed through the academic program grade grievance procedure or academic program Personnel Committee," a separate track this page does not detail. Notifications run through Kean's Maxient database and Kean-issued email, with UPS mail as a fallback if a student does not open the notice. Source: Academic Integrity Policy. Revision history of this page

2026-09-25 — Page created. All quotations retrieved this date from the kean.edu and libanswers.kean.edu pages linked beside them; the Academic Integrity Policy displays "(Approved by the Kean University Board of Trustees on September 16, 2024.)" on its own face, and the LibAnswers FAQ displays "last updated Aug 14, 2026." Detection-inventory sweep performed: named-vendor sweep of kean.edu and libanswers.kean.edu (Turnitin, Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep of the Academic Integrity Policy, the Learning Commons support pages, and the University Libraries' AI guide. NOT DISQUALIFIED: this is one of the more directly documented deployments in this collection — the Board-approved policy itself, rather than a teaching-center aside, names "AI detection tools integrated into Canvas" as evidence faculty may use, alongside other methods, with no caution or disabling language attached anywhere in the policy. TRANSPORT NOTE: two Kean pages returned HTTP 403 to a plain fetch — the "Resources for Faculty" academic-integrity page and the "AI @ Kean" hub page both served a bot-detection interstitial ("Access denied") rather than content, and neither was used; a third page reported to discuss AI detection by name, the CTL's "AI Use Violations" guide, redirects unconditionally to a SharePoint site requiring a Kean login and could not be read at all. None of the three was quoted or relied on; everything on this page traces to pages that returned readable first-party content. Deliberate omission, do not chase again: a search-engine-summarized claim that "assignments are checked using AI writing detection tools like Turnitin and GPTZero" could not be traced to any of the three readable pages and is not used; the only first-party sentence located is the policy's own, vendor-generic "AI detection tools integrated into Canvas." SUBSTANTIVE FINDING: no evidentiary standard (such as preponderance of the evidence) is stated anywhere in the fifteen-plus-page policy — a genuine absence, not an oversight in this review, confirmed by a direct search of the full document text. Second finding: no provision on recording a meeting or hearing, at any level, was located; the only meeting-conduct detail in the entire policy is the University Appeals Board's advisor rule. OMBUDS: none located on kean.edu in this review; the Office of Accessibility Services uses "self-advocacy" language but is disability-services-specific, not a general academic-integrity advocate, and is not presented as one. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Subreddit demand scan not run (outside this run's research method). Internet Archive captures: to be added. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-25).
