Kansas State University.
- Detection status
- No AI-text detector confirmed deployed — the Canvas third-party apps list, the Teaching and Learning Center's AI-resources page, IT's resources, and the Graduate School's ETDR pipeline all come back empty; Honorlock is licensed for exam proctoring only, not AI-text detection; the Honor and Integrity System's plagiarism definition was revised in 2026 to name genAI/computer-generated work explicitly
- Office in these sources
- Honor and Integrity System · 201F Holton Hall · 532-2595 (K-State's own directory publishes the number in this local format only, without an area code; the 785 area code used campus-wide is confirmed elsewhere on k-state.edu, but no source reviewed states this office's number combined with it as a single ten-digit number) · honor@k-state.edu
- Ombuds or advocacy office
- Student Ombudsperson Office — "Confidential. Independent. Impartial. Reproduced from the institution’s own pages quoted below — potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case.
Kansas State University's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. K-State administers academic-dishonesty allegations through its Honor and Integrity System, whose procedures sit alongside the University Handbook's Appendix F (the underlying conduct code and constitution) and the Registrar's own grading and transcript rules — the three documents are read together below rather than treated as a single text. K-State's Teaching and Learning Center separately notes that AI-use rules are set course by course; there is no single university-wide AI-use policy located in this review, so your syllabus and assignment instructions are also relevant sources for your own situation. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.
What K-State documents — and what it doesn't
No AI-text detector was located as confirmed, deployed technology anywhere on k-state.edu in this review. The Canvas Tools page, which lists every third-party app supported university-wide, names none (page updated 4/1/2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026):
Source: Tools to Enhance Canvas. No Turnitin integration of any kind — plagiarism-similarity or AI-writing — appears on this list. Examity is named, but scoped to K-State's Global Campus (its online-degree division) and is an exam-proctoring vendor, not an AI-text detector; it does not appear on K-State's general proctoring pages, which instead name Honorlock as the university's current tool (see below).
The one place k-state.edu discusses AI-writing detection as a topic is a curated reading list maintained by the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) — a faculty-development center distinct from the Honor and Integrity System — under headings "Detection" and "Ethical Issues with AI Detection" (page updated 3/27/2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026):
Source: AI Tools — TLC, whose own stated purpose is "to provide information about and resources for the issues of academic integrity concerns and the utilization of AI tools." These are links to outside articles and to a vendor's own blog post — none of them a K-State statement that Turnitin's AI indicator, GPTZero, or any other detector is licensed, enabled, or relied on here. No endorsement or deployment language accompanies the list in either direction, for or against a specific tool.
K-State does license Honorlock, described first-party as exam-proctoring technology, not AI-text detection (page updated 1/28/2025; retrieved Sep 3, 2026):
Source: Honorlock for Instructors — TLC. The same page directs instructors reviewing "any flags or violations that may have occurred during a student's exam" to the Honor and Integrity System if a violation is found — Honorlock's own flags concern exam conduct (identity, environment, browser activity), not a written submission's AI-generation likelihood.
The one substantive, current change on K-State's own governing document is to the honor system's definition of plagiarism itself, not to a detection tool. The University Handbook's Appendix F was revised in 2026 (revision dated 3-10-26 in the document's own history line; page updated 3/24/2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026) to read:
Source: University Handbook, Appendix F. This brings generative-AI output within the honor system's existing plagiarism definition by name; it is a definitional change to what counts as a violation, not a statement about how such a violation would be detected or evidenced.
The absence stated at the scope actually searched: no AI-detection tool was located in this review across the named vendors (Turnitin's AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity beyond its scoped Global Campus proctoring listing), the Canvas third-party apps list above, K-State IT's resources and service-portal pages, the Graduate School's Electronic Theses, Dissertations, and Reports FAQ (page updated 8/10/2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026, naming no plagiarism check or AI-detection requirement for thesis or dissertation submission), K-State Libraries' Artificial Intelligence Literacy research guide (updated May 9, 2025), or the AI Consultation Service (KAICS) pilot page (updated 8/12/2026) — none of which mentions a detection tool in either direction. A 2019 K-State Today announcement of a campus Turnitin.com presentation, and reporting from that era that K-State was then one of the few Big 12 institutions without a university-wide plagiarism-detection license, are historical background rather than evidence of a current deployment and are not relied on here. K-State's own AI Task Force, formed in 2025 to develop university-wide generative-AI policy, includes academic integrity among the areas it is charged with examining, but has not, as of this review, published a detection-tool policy.
What K-State's own pages say about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- "The AV and Reporter may have an advisor present with them while being interviewed by the Case Review Board." For the separate multiple-violations hearing track: "During the hearing, the Violator may consult as necessary with his/her Advisor." Recording is the institution's own act, not the student's choice: "All CRB meetings are audio recorded and kept as part of the permanent record of the adjudication procedures." — Investigation and Adjudication Procedures, Honor and Integrity System (page updated 4/2/2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026) · Investigation and Adjudication Procedures
- What follows on the record
- "The standard sanction for an Honor Pledge violation is the assignment of an XF on the student's transcript." On removal: "The F physically remains on the transcript, however the course may be retaken for a grade which will be used in grade point average calculation." — K-State Honor and Integrity System Definition of Terms (page updated 4/2/2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026) · Definition of Terms. The Registrar's own Transcript Legend confirms the notation as it appears on the official record, in its grading-system table: "XF/XNC | Honor Code Violation | 0.000" (effective January 1, 2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026) · Transcript Legend
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution’s own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
From the Honor and Integrity System's Investigation and Adjudication Procedures (page updated 4/2/2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026):
Source: Investigation and Adjudication Procedures. K-State does not describe its evidentiary standard as "preponderance"; the University Handbook's Appendix F states the standard differently, as due process rather than a named burden of proof (page updated 3/24/2026; retrieved Sep 3, 2026): "the governing principle, once cheating is suspected, is that due process shall be observed and no charge made without adequate objective evidence." Source: University Handbook, Appendix F.
Sanctions for a first violation range from a written warning up through an XF or permanent XF in the course, with a Case Review Board or Hearing Panel able to recommend suspension, expulsion, or degree revocation to the Provost for final decision. Multiple violations go to a five-member Hearing Panel rather than the three-member Case Review Board. What K-State's own pages do not state, in the sources reviewed: whether or when a finding is disclosed to a graduate program, employer, or licensing board beyond what appears on the academic transcript itself. What any of this means for a particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Revision history of this page
2026-09-03 — Page created. All quotations retrieved this date from the k-state.edu, canvas.k-state.edu and k-state.edu/registrar pages linked beside them. Source pages carried their own dates as noted beside each quotation: the Investigation and Adjudication Procedures and Definition of Terms pages both display "Updated 4/2/2026"; the University Handbook, Appendix F displays "Updated 3/24/2026" (its own text carries a 3-10-26 revision line); the Canvas Tools page displays "Updated 4/1/2026"; the TLC AI Tools page displays "Updated 3/27/2026"; the Honorlock for Instructors page displays "Updated 1/28/2025"; the Registrar's Transcript Legend states it is "Effective: January 1, 2026"; the Honor and Integrity System home page displays "Updated 4/10/2026"; the Student Ombudsperson Office page displays "Updated 4/3/2026"; the university directory (offices.html) displays "Updated 8/12/2026"; and the Graduate School's ETDR FAQ displays "Updated 8/10/2026." Detection sweep recorded here: named-vendor sweep (Turnitin's AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) plus category sweep (the Canvas third-party apps list, K-State IT's resources and service-portal pages, the Graduate School's ETDR pipeline, the proctoring stack, K-State Libraries' AI Literacy guide, and the AI Consultation Service pilot page). Findings: Honorlock confirmed licensed for exam proctoring, explicitly not AI-text detection; Examity confirmed listed on the Canvas apps page but scoped to Global Campus proctoring; no AI-text detector — Turnitin's or any other — confirmed deployed anywhere on k-state.edu. The Teaching and Learning Center's "AI Tools" page links to a Turnitin blog post and an NPR piece on GPTZero under a "Detection" heading and to four external critiques under "Ethical Issues with AI Detection," but this is a curated bibliography maintained by the teaching center, not a statement by K-State that any of these tools is licensed or relied on; it is described in section 01 accordingly and not treated as a deployment. A 2019 K-State Today announcement of a Turnitin.com presentation on campus was located and treated as historical background, not current evidence, and is not cited as a source above. Deliberate omission: the Division of IT's "Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence with University Owned Data and Records" (PDF dated Aug 6, 2025) was read in full and found to concern data protection, records classification, and an approved-tools list for employee use of generative AI (Adobe Firefly, Microsoft M365 Copilot, Grammarly for Education, Zoom AI Companion) — it says nothing about AI-writing detection, evidentiary weight, or academic-integrity procedure, so it is not cited above. The evidentiary-standard sentence in section 02 is quoted from the University Handbook rather than assumed to be "preponderance," since K-State's own pages do not use that word. Disclosure of a finding to a graduate program, employer, or licensing board beyond the transcript notation itself was searched for (Registrar FAQs, honor system pages, Graduate School admissions and handbook pages) and not found; this is recorded in section 02 as not stated in the sources reviewed, not asserted either way. Nothing on this page is paraphrase-pending; every source above was captured as text directly. The Honor and Integrity System's own phone number is published on K-State's directory page in local format only ("532-2595," no area code). The 785 area code is confirmed campus-wide elsewhere on k-state.edu (the Registrar's own Transcript Legend gives "785-532-6254" for a different office), but no source reviewed states the honor office's number as a complete ten-digit number, so the docket and source map present it exactly as published, unlinked as a tel: number, with the area-code gap stated rather than filled in.
