Miami University's published sources on AI detection and its Academic Integrity Policy, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course syllabi and instructor-set AI rules also apply, and Miami's own policy states that misunderstanding the standards is not an excuse. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.
What Miami's own pages say about detection
Miami's IT knowledge base states plainly which text-matching tool is used, and that it is the only one (retrieved Sep 14, 2026):
Source: Enable on a Canvas assignment (instructor) / Turnitin — Miami University Knowledge Base. The same article routes similarity or academic-integrity questions to "the Academic Integrity department at 513-529-0027 or academicintegrity@miamioh.edu." No first-party Miami page located in this review states whether Turnitin's separate AI-writing-detection feature (distinct from its plagiarism/similarity check) is enabled, disabled, or unused on Miami's Canvas instance.
On the question of relying on any AI detector, Academic Affairs' faculty-facing AI guidance is direct (no on-page revision date; retrieved Sep 14, 2026):
Source: AI for Faculty — Academic Affairs. This is guidance to instructors on how to approach suspected AI use, not a statement that Miami has purchased, enabled, or disabled any specific detector; no detector already in use (Turnitin's plagiarism/similarity function) is described as disabled anywhere in this guidance or elsewhere on miamioh.edu.
Separately, Miami's Academic Integrity Policy defines unauthorized AI use itself as a form of academic dishonesty, independent of how it might be detected: "Submitting material, in whole or part, generated through an artificial intelligence output-generating program, software, or application without permission from the instructor." Source: Academic Integrity — University Policy Library (published 7/08/18; last updated 3/25/26; retrieved Sep 14, 2026).
Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep of Miami's IT knowledge base, Academic Affairs teaching pages, and University Libraries research guides found no detector besides Turnitin's plagiarism/similarity function, named at any of these institution-wide pages.
What Miami's Academic Integrity Policy says about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- "Students may bring an advisor of their choice and up to two persons for support to the hearing. However, the advisor or support persons may not speak on behalf of the student. If an advisor or support person is determined to be unreasonably interfering with the hearing, they may be asked to leave." Recording of the hearing itself is not addressed anywhere in the policy. — Academic Integrity, University Policy Library (published 7/08/18; last updated 3/25/26; retrieved Sep 14, 2026) · Academic Integrity — University Policy Library
- What follows on the record
- “The Office of the University Registrar will record the grade of ADF or ADY for the course with a transcript notation of "Academic Dishonesty (class)."” Suspension and dismissal are separately noted on the student's academic record as "Academic Integrity Suspension" and "Academic Integrity Dismissal." Non-suspension records are "maintained for seven academic years following the date the finding is made at which time they may be destroyed"; records of "a sanction of suspension or dismissal are maintained indefinitely," though a student may petition to expunge a lesser sanction's record after seven years. — same source
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
From Miami's Academic Integrity Policy (published 7/08/18; last updated 3/25/26; retrieved Sep 14, 2026):
A student who does not accept the proposed resolution may request a hearing before "the department chair/program director of the department/program in which the alleged violation arose." A first-offense finding may bring "[a] grade of zero (0) on the academic assignment(s) in question," an "additional reduction in the final course grade," and "[p]articipation in an online academic integrity workshop," with a $200 fee; higher-severity or major-assignment offenses may bring a course grade of F, Y, ADF, or ADY, and "[f]irst offenses may result in suspension or dismissal due to the severity of the behavior and/or presence of aggravating circumstances." A second offense carries "a minimum of one semester suspension," and a repeat suspension-level offense carries dismissal as the minimum sanction.
Appeal: "A student found responsible for an act of academic dishonesty may appeal the decision or sanction(s) in writing within five University business days of the date of the written decision by the academic integrity staff," on one of three stated grounds — "inappropriate sanction," a "procedural error… substantial enough to have changed the outcome," or "new evidence… substantial enough to have changed the outcome." The appeal goes to "the dean of the division in which the matter arose," whose decision "is final." A student found responsible for a prior offense may separately petition, within five University business days of the decision, "to waive the period of suspension or to hold the dismissal in abeyance," reviewed by an Interdivisional Committee of Advisors.

Revision history of this page
2026-09-14 — Page created. Cold build (no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse); Priority A, tranche 4, entry 117. Slug "miamioh" deliberately chosen over "miami" to avoid confusion with the University of Miami (Florida); most web searches for "Miami University ombudsperson" returned University of Miami results despite domain filters, and none were used. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (IT knowledge base, Academic Affairs teaching pages, University Libraries AI and plagiarism guides) found Turnitin confirmed as the sole Canvas plagiarism/similarity tool ("Turnitin will be the only option, since Miami University is only using Turnitin through Canvas," IT knowledge base). No page found confirms or denies whether Turnitin's separate AI-writing-detection feature is enabled on Miami's instance. Not disqualified: Turnitin's plagiarism/similarity function is confirmed in active use and is not described as disabled anywhere; Academic Affairs' faculty guidance states "Miami does not recommend relying on AI detection tools to determine whether work was produced with AI," but this is guidance discouraging reliance on a class of tool never confirmed deployed for that purpose, directing suspected cases instead through the Academic Integrity Policy process — not a statement disabling a detector already in use. DELIBERATE OMISSION: a Markup news article (Aug 14, 2023) quotes a Miami University student describing personal worry about AI detectors; it names no Miami policy, links no Miami source, and is not reproduced here as it is a third-party account, not first-party evidence of deployment. Process captured in full from the Academic Integrity Policy (University Policy Library; published 7/08/18, last updated 3/25/26), which is unusually complete: evidentiary standard, advisor/support-person rights, sanctions grid by offense severity and count, appeal grounds and window, transcript notation (ADF/ADY; "Academic Integrity Suspension"/"Academic Integrity Dismissal"), and records retention (seven academic years, or indefinite for suspension/dismissal, with a seven-year expungement petition available for lesser sanctions) are all stated in one document. Recording of the hearing is not addressed anywhere in the policy; stated as an absence rather than inferred. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED: no office titled ombudsperson or ombuds was located anywhere on miamioh.edu in this review. The Office of the Dean of Students publishes general language — "The Office of the Dean of Students provides advocacy, support, and care through student-centered programs, services, and resources" — but its Support Services page does not name academic integrity or academic dishonesty allegations among what it addresses (unlike, e.g., Buffalo's Students' Advocate, which names that scope explicitly), and does not describe the office as independent, confidential, neutral, or impartial. Following the same rule that excluded UB's Students' Advocate from being adopted uncritically and excluded UNM's Ombuds Services for its stated population, this office is not presented here as an ombuds or advocacy resource for academic-integrity cases; the docket states the absence. Office contact (Academic Integrity: Laws Hall 317, Oxford, OH 45056, 513-529-0027, academicintegrity@MiamiOH.edu) captured from the office's own contact page; a current staff member's name appears on the Academic Affairs AI-for-faculty page but is not reproduced here in favor of the stable office title and contact. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-14).
2026-09-14 — Internet Archive capture pass; captures requested and confirmed by tools/spn.py, not a human review and not a re-verification of any quotation. Stored and played back this date: the Dean of Students support-services index (miamioh.edu/centers-institutes/division-of-student-life/dean-of-students/support-services/index.html), the Academic Integrity policies-and-process hub (miamioh.edu/integrity/policies-process/), its process guide (miamioh.edu/integrity/policies-process/process-guide/index.html), and the Student Handbook's academic-integrity regulation (miamioh.edu/policy-library/students/undergraduate/academic-regulations/academic-integrity.html). Two sources were not stored and rest seven days before they are eligible again: the AI-in-teaching faculty page (miamioh.edu/academic-affairs/faculty-resources/teaching/ai-in-teaching/ai-faculty.html), which Save Page Now would not capture, and the TeamDynamix knowledge-base article on Turnitin (miamioh.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=18081), whose capture would not play back. A stored copy that does not play back is not a capture and is not recorded as one.
