SUNY New Paltz.

Detection status
Turnitin's AI writing detector is deployed campus-wide, integrated with Brightspace ("Turnitin is the campus supported tool"). OIT's own guidance states "no AI detection tool is perfectly accurate," that "faculty must not assume that a positive result from an AI tool means a student used AI," and that "False positives can happen"; OIT directs faculty uncertain of a result to ask whether the student can verbally convey the same ideas, show the sources they consulted, or produce drafts.

Reproduced from the institution's own pages quoted below — potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case.

SUNY New Paltz's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — New Paltz has not yet finalized a campus-wide generative-AI policy, and its interim guidance states that "Students are required to adhere to all course and academic policies, as well as specific guidance in the course syllabus," so your syllabus is also a relevant source. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

Turnitin's AI writing detector is in use, with OIT's own reliability caution

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing detector specifically, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) across newpaltz.edu found only Turnitin, confirmed first-party by an OIT faculty knowledge-base article, "About Turnitin AI Detection" (page dated created Mar 22, 2024, modified Nov 5, 2025; retrieved Oct 18, 2026):

"Turnitin is the campus supported tool." "Turnitin is integrated into our Brightspace DLE and part of the Similarity Reporting tool, TurnItIn." "Keep in mind that no AI detection tool is perfectly accurate. … Fortunately, our official campus tool is among the better tools." "…faculty must not assume that a positive result from an AI tool means a student used AI." "No AI detector tool is 100% accurate." "False positives can happen." "OIT does not recommend using any other outside tools for AI Detection."

A companion OIT article, in its own voice, addresses what a faculty member should do with an uncertain result (page dated created Apr 27, 2023, modified Mar 22, 2024; retrieved Oct 18, 2026) — this is the process-based verification method OIT itself publishes:

"…it's always going to come down to a judgment call and maybe a secondary type of assessment…" "…can the student verbally convey the same ideas as in the paper? Can they show you the specific sources they consulted? Do they have any drafts of their work?"

Source: Faculty: Message to Faculty about Turnitin's AI writing detector — OIT Knowledge Base. The same article also relays a Turnitin representative's own accuracy claims about the detector; those are the vendor's statements rather than New Paltz's, and are not reproduced here as the institution's own evidence.

Category sweep: "Generative AI at SUNY New Paltz: What You Need to Know," an Information Technology Services (ITS) knowledge-base article distinct from the OIT article above (page dated created Feb 11, 2026, modified Jun 30, 2026; retrieved Oct 18, 2026), lists approved generative-AI tools (Brightspace Lumi, Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft 365 Apps, Adobe, Panopto) and names Turnitin only in a separate list of "Other AI-Enhanced Tools," with no description of how it is used; it states "Students are required to adhere to all course and academic policies, as well as specific guidance in the course syllabus." Source: Generative AI at SUNY New Paltz: What You Need to Know — ITS Knowledge Base. DISQUALIFICATION CHECK: nothing located in this sweep states that Turnitin's AI detector, or any AI-text detector, has been disabled at New Paltz or is recommended against; not disqualified.

What New Paltz's Academic Integrity policy and Student Handbook say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
For a Disciplinary Hearing, "[t]he alleged student shall be entitled to be accompanied by an advisor of choice who may assist and advise the alleged student throughout the hearing. The advisor's role must be passive in nature. … The advisor of choice may not present information, question witnesses, or speak during the hearing to anyone other than the student they are advising." The University, not the student, makes the official record: "The University will make a record of the events of the hearing that will be retained in its custody. An alleged student may request, in writing, a transcript," at the requesting party's cost. — Student Handbook, August 2026 · Student Handbook — Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards
What follows on the record
"Disciplinary records will be retained by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards for seven (7) years. Case files involving disciplinary suspension or expulsion will be retained permanently." A student "Expelled from the University for any violation of campus regulations will have their Student Conduct sanction permanently noted on their academic transcript. Notations for expulsion shall not be removed." Records are "confidential except to authorized University personnel," released to an outside agency "only through a signed release from the student or a court subpoena." — Student Handbook, August 2026 · Student Handbook — Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

New Paltz runs two tracks, named as such by its own Student Handbook. The Academic Integrity policy (undergraduate catalog page: "Approved by faculty on 10/20/2017; Enacted on 10/26/2017. Clarifications added 5/19/2026"; retrieved Oct 18, 2026) governs course-level resolution: students found responsible "are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion," and course-based penalties ("reprimand, failure on the individual assignment," and others) are set by the instructor, with a penalty of course failure requiring the divisional dean's review. A student "has ten (10) business days to appeal in writing to the divisional dean," and, to appeal the dean's decision, "ten (10) business days from the date of the notification letter" to the Committee on Academic Standing & Appeals. Graduate students instead follow the Graduate Appeals Procedures. No evidentiary standard is stated in this policy itself, searched directly. Source: Academic Integrity: Policy, Procedures & Appeals — Undergraduate Catalog.

The Student Handbook's own Campus Regulations name a second track: "In those cases where allegations of academic dishonesty have been filed with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards," the charge is adjudicated as a Campus Regulations violation, with a stated sanction range of "Disciplinary Probation, Suspension Held in Abeyance, Suspension or Expulsion," which "does not preclude academic penalties imposed by an instructor." For that track, the Handbook states a single, explicit standard of proof: "The Student Conduct process is administrative in nature which allows for flexibility and the reasonable use of discretion. As such, a preponderance of evidence is utilized as the standard of proof." The Handbook does not state which allegations are resolved on the first track alone and which are filed on the second; both are reproduced as published. Revision history of this page

2026-10-18 — Page created. Priority A tranche 4, entry 272. Cold build (scheduled, unattended); no prior CANDIDATES.md/procedure-facts.json research to reuse. SUNY campus; per QUEUE.md's standing note, SUNY campuses are resolved independently of each other rather than from a system-wide position, since Buffalo and Stony Brook were each built on their own sources. All quotations retrieved this date. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing detector specifically, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) found only Turnitin, confirmed first-party via an OIT faculty knowledge-base article, "About Turnitin AI Detection" (created 3/22/24, modified 11/5/25): deployed campus-wide, integrated with Brightspace, with an explicit reliability caution ("no AI detection tool is perfectly accurate," "faculty must not assume that a positive result from an AI tool means a student used AI," "False positives can happen") and a stated preference for outside tools ("OIT does not recommend using any other outside tools for AI Detection"). DETECTOR RELIANCE: both the evidentiary-weight statement above and a process-based verification method are carried into the status line, the latter from a companion OIT article (created 4/27/23, modified 3/22/24) addressing faculty directly: ask "can the student verbally convey the same ideas as in the paper? Can they show you the specific sources they consulted? Do they have any drafts of their work?" That same article relays a Turnitin representative's own accuracy claims (a 98%-confidence, under-1%-false-positive figure); that is the vendor's statement, not New Paltz's, and is not presented here as the institution's own evidence. DISQUALIFICATION CHECK: category sweep of a separate Information Technology Services (ITS) knowledge-base article, "Generative AI at SUNY New Paltz: What You Need to Know" (created 2/11/26, modified 6/30/26), found an approved-tools list (Brightspace Lumi, Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft 365 Apps, Adobe, Panopto) and Turnitin named only in a separate "Other AI-Enhanced Tools" list with no usage description; nothing in any page swept recommends against AI detection or states it has been disabled; not disqualified. The same article states students must follow "specific guidance in the course syllabus" among other campus policies, and a search found no campus-wide generative-AI policy yet in force (a draft dated 4/30/25 was located but is not itself in force, so it is not quoted here as current policy). PROCESS, FROM TWO SOURCES READ TOGETHER AS THE HANDBOOK ITSELF DIRECTS: the undergraduate catalog's Academic Integrity policy (course-level track: instructor-set penalty up to course failure, "ten (10) business days" to appeal to the divisional dean, a further "ten (10) business days" to appeal to the Committee on Academic Standing & Appeals; no evidentiary standard stated in this policy itself) and the Student Handbook, August 2026 (second track: allegations "filed with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards" are charged as a Campus Regulations violation, sanction range through suspension or expulsion, adjudicated under the Handbook's general Student Conduct process, which states "a preponderance of evidence is utilized as the standard of proof"). The Handbook does not state which allegations proceed on which track; both are reproduced as published rather than reconciled. ACCOMPANIMENT AND RECORDING, FROM THE DISCIPLINARY HEARING SECTION: an advisor of choice may attend in a passive role only ("may not present information, question witnesses, or speak during the hearing to anyone other than the student they are advising"); the University alone makes the official hearing record, and a student may request a transcript of it in writing at their own cost. RECORDS: disciplinary records are retained seven years by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, permanently for suspension or expulsion case files; confidential except to authorized personnel, released to an outside agency only by signed release or court subpoena. TRANSCRIPT NOTATION: the Handbook's Academic Transcript Notation Policy states a Clery-Act-driven permanent notation for crimes of violence specifically, and, in the same numbered policy, a withdrawal-with-charges-pending notation (removed at the end of a suspension period) and a permanent transcript notation for expulsion "for any violation of campus regulations" — both reproduced verbatim rather than narrowed to the crimes-of-violence context that opens the section, since the text itself is not scoped that way. OFFICE: Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, HAB 702, 845-257-3260, conduct@newpaltz.edu, confirmed directly on the office's own page. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY: searched newpaltz.edu for "ombuds," "ombudsperson," and "student advocacy"; found no dedicated office. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-18).
