01Detection status

No detector confirmed — an empty inventory, with a caution against the technology generally

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the Artificial Intelligence hub's student and academic-integrity guidance, the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning's AI resources, the University Libraries' AI Detectors guide, and NIU's Blackboard-support pages) found SafeAssign confirmed as NIU's Blackboard plagiarism tool and no AI-text detector named as deployed anywhere at NIU.

NIU's own Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning published a blog post on AI detectors (Dec 12, 2024; retrieved Sep 25, 2026) that discourages relying on them, without stating that NIU itself has ever deployed one:

"AI detectors are often marketed as solutions for maintaining academic integrity, but their significant drawbacks often outweigh any perceived benefits." "Use critical judgment over outside tools: If you do choose to use an AI detector, don't let it replace your own judgment. Evaluate your students' work holistically."

Source: AI detectors: An ethical minefield — Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning. This is teaching-center guidance to faculty about the technology as a class, not a statement that a specific tool was purchased and then disabled at NIU; no NIU page located in this review names an AI-text detector as ever having been deployed. NIU's University Libraries maintain a separate AI Detectors guide (Last Updated Jul 16, 2026; retrieved Sep 25, 2026) that curates outside readings critical of the technology, including from other institutions' own teaching centers, and does not name or endorse any tool for NIU's own use. Your syllabus and assignment instructions are therefore among the relevant sources for your own situation.

02Published process

What NIU's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
A student subject to the conduct process has the right "[t]o be accompanied by an advisor and or observer of their choice." At a hearing, the advisor "is not permitted to have a verbal role in the proceedings or to represent or speak on behalf of the respondent." At an Academic Misconduct Board hearing: "Only the Office of Student Conduct may audio-record a hearing." At the earlier preliminary-review meeting: "A student has the right to decline permission to audio record the meeting without penalty... No other party may audio record the meeting." — Code of Student Conduct (adopted 8/1/2022; retrieved Sep 25, 2026) · Code of Student Conduct
What follows on the record
"There shall be a single verbatim record, such as a audio recording, of all hearings... The record is the property of NIU and will be maintained by the Office of Student Conduct." No transcript notation specific to a course-level academic-misconduct sanction is stated; where a matter remains unresolved at withdrawal or graduation, "a hold may be placed on the student's ability to reenroll, obtain official transcripts and/or graduate." — Code of Student Conduct (retrieved Sep 25, 2026) · Code of Student Conduct

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

NIU's Code of Student Conduct (adopted 8/1/2022; retrieved Sep 25, 2026) defines the misconduct category and its own two-stage process:

"The receipt or transmission of unauthorized aid on assignments or examinations," along with plagiarism, unauthorized use of examination materials, cheating, and other forms of dishonesty in academic matters, is defined as Academic Misconduct under the Code. "A faculty member has original jurisdiction over any instance(s) of academic misconduct that occurs in a course that the faculty member teaches." "The accused student shall be given the opportunity to resolve the alleged incident in a meeting with the faculty member, and if requested the department chair. If the facts of the incident are not disputed by the accused student, the faculty member may elect to resolve the matter at the departmental level by issuing a sanction no greater than an F for that course." "Sanctions, in addition to an F in the course, may be issued only by the Office of Student Conduct for cases involving academic misconduct." "Any student accused of academic misconduct who does not accept responsibility shall have their case heard by an Academic Misconduct Board." "The determination shall be made based on the preponderance of the evidence."

The Office of Student Conduct's own faculty guidance describes the first step in plainer terms: "Attempt to meet with your student about the incident... Make at least two attempts to contact your student, preferably in writing, to arrange a meeting." Once a matter is referred to the Office of Student Conduct, the Code's general preliminary-review and hearing procedures govern, including the general due-process rights list quoted above and a standard-of-proof section restating preponderance of the evidence.

On appeal, the Code's Grade Appeal provision for academic misconduct routes a student to a separate process: "Any accused student who wishes to appeal the grade in a course may do so by following the rules outlined in the Policy Library" — a document this review did not fetch, recorded as a gap rather than assumed. The Code's own general Appeal Review section, which governs an appeal from a Board or hearing-officer decision more broadly, allows five business days to appeal on one of three grounds: a procedural error that likely impacted the outcome, newly discovered information, or a sanction that was "unreasonable or severe."

Revision history of this page

2026-09-25 — Page created. All quotations retrieved this date from the niu.edu, citl.news.niu.edu and libguides.niu.edu pages linked beside them; the Code of Student Conduct is a PDF dated "Adopted on 8/1/2022" on every page footer, the CITL blog post displays "December 12, 2024," and the Libraries' AI Detectors guide displays "Last Updated: Jul 16, 2026." Detection-inventory sweep performed: named-vendor sweep of niu.edu, libguides.niu.edu and citl.news.niu.edu (Turnitin, Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep of the Artificial Intelligence hub's student and academic-integrity guidance, the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning's resources, the University Libraries' AI Detectors guide, and the Blackboard-support pages. NOT DISQUALIFIED: a genuine empty inventory — no detector was ever documented as deployed at NIU, so there is nothing to have been disabled — the same pattern as Hunter College, NC A&T, University at Albany, the University of Vermont, and the University of Akron earlier in this queue. The CITL blog post's caution against relying on AI detectors is teaching-center guidance about the technology as a class, comparable in kind to University at Albany's Teaching and Learning guidance that AI detection software "is notoriously ineffective" and "frequently wrong" (also NOT DISQUALIFIED); it is reproduced with that provenance rather than treated as a disabling of an institutional tool, and it is distinguished from the Sacramento State/Oklahoma State pattern because it is a teaching-center blog post, not guidance embedded in the institution's own recommended academic-misconduct-response procedure with a detector step actually removed. GPTZero appears once on a CITL "Class Policies for AI Tools" resource page as one faculty member's own (non-NIU, UMass Lowell) sample syllabus policy compiled alongside others; it is not carried onto this page since it names no NIU practice. SafeAssign is confirmed first-party for plagiarism/similarity checking in Blackboard, not for AI-text detection. Ombuds/advocacy sweep: NIU's Office of the Ombudsperson is confirmed first-party as a general-purpose, all-audience office describing itself with "Confidentiality • Impartiality • Independence • Informality," reused here rather than the standard absence line; its own pages do not state one way or the other whether it takes up academic-integrity or academic-misconduct matters specifically, and that absence is stated on the page rather than assumed in either direction. SUBSTANTIVE FINDING: the Code's "Grade Appeal for Academic Misconduct" provision routes a grade appeal to "the rules outlined in the Policy Library," a separate document this pass did not fetch — recorded as a gap. Second finding: no transcript-notation provision specific to a course-level academic-misconduct sanction was located; the Code's only transcript-facing language ties to unresolved matters at withdrawal, leave, or graduation ("a hold may be placed on the student's ability to reenroll, obtain official transcripts and/or graduate") and, for serious misconduct discovered after graduation, to degree revocation ("NIU may revoke that student's degree and block the release of transcripts"). Deliberate omission: a general conduct sanction ("Formal Warning") states "[a] notation is made on the student's record," but this is one of nineteen general sanctions the Code lists for conduct violations broadly, not a rule stated specifically for academic misconduct, and it is not presented on this page as an academic-misconduct-specific transcript rule. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Subreddit demand scan not run (outside this run's research method). Internet Archive captures: to be added. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-25).
