SCSU's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — a given course's syllabus may set its own sanctions within this procedure, and SCSU's Academic Integrity Policy itself states that "[i]nstructors and research directors have the ability to define academic integrity violations for their instruction and to outline sanctions within their course". Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

SCSU states plainly that no AI-detection service is approved for use

A named-vendor sweep of stcloudstate.edu and services.stcloudstate.edu for Turnitin (including its AI writing indicator), SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, and Examity found no first-party SCSU page documenting any of them as deployed (retrieved Oct 6, 2026). The university's IT knowledge base goes further than a silent inventory: its own article on faculty use of generative AI states directly (article created Aug 14, 2023; modified Nov 18, 2025; retrieved Oct 6, 2026):

"Faculty cannot use unapproved software to check for plagiarism, including generative AI tools. Currently, there are no approved AI detection services or plagiarism detection services available to the campus. Uploading student work to such services is not approved."

Source: Can faculty upload student coursework to generative AI tools, including to check for plagiarism? — IT Services knowledge base. The same article notes, without presenting it as an approved detection service: "Microsoft Office features a Similarity tool which reviews Word documents for similarity to online sources."

The category sweep also checked a second IT knowledge-base article on instructor AI guidelines and the Academic Technologies support page; neither names a detection tool. The What guidelines should instructors follow when it comes to using artificial intelligence? article (retrieved Oct 6, 2026) covers syllabus statements and classroom use, with no detection-tool mention. The Academic Technologies support page (retrieved Oct 6, 2026) names only D2L Brightspace, the campus learning-management system, plus an unnamed proctoring-services category.

SCSU is a Minnesota State campus. The system's own "Generative Artificial Intelligence: Policy Intersections, Considerations, and Recommendations" states, discussing detection tools industry-wide rather than any specific campus's deployment (retrieved Oct 6, 2026; re-verified unchanged from the first Minnesota State build in this collection):

"A selection of these service providers include TurnItIn, Copyleaks, GPTZero, and Originality AI. Performance testing of AI detection tools demonstrates a propensity for false positive outcomes across the industry. […] The Minnesota State system office does not recommend the use of AI detection tools as singular indicators of plagiarism."

Source: Generative Artificial Intelligence: Policy Intersections, Considerations, and Recommendations — Minnesota State, § 3.4.1. This document names the tools only as generic industry examples in a caution against sole reliance; it does not state that any Minnesota State campus has purchased, licensed, or disabled one of them, and at SCSU specifically, the campus's own IT knowledge base states that none is approved at all.

02Published process

What SCSU's own pages say about how academic-integrity cases proceed

Who may be present
"The student(s) may request one representative of their choosing and at their own expense, if any, to serve as a consultant at any meeting during the process. […] A student's chosen consultant may be present during meetings of the academic integrity procedure, but may not appear in the place of, nor speak, write, or otherwise communicate on behalf of, the student." — Academic Integrity Policy & Procedure (effective Feb 28, 2014; last updated Jul 29, 2026; retrieved Oct 6, 2026). Recording of meetings is not addressed anywhere in the policy or procedure.
What follows on the record
"Violations themselves do not appear on the transcript, but sanctions related to violations might. Grades that are affected by a sanction will appear on the transcript, but no notation referring to this procedure will appear. Sanctions that result in suspension or expulsion will appear according to already established protocols." Records are retained by Student Affairs "according to their retention schedule for Community Standards violations." — Academic Integrity Policy & Procedure (retrieved Oct 6, 2026).

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution’s own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

From SCSU's Academic Integrity Policy & Procedure (3.05.1; effective Feb 28, 2014; last updated Jul 29, 2026; retrieved Oct 6, 2026):

"If a research director, test administrator, or other university employee is the issuer of the form and they are not the Professor or Instructor of Record (PIR), a copy will be sent to the PIR as well." "Within 10 duty days from the date the Academic Integrity Allegation Form is received with Box 1 completed, the PIR is to meet with the student to discuss the allegation(s) and whether the information and/or documentation supports the allegation(s), and determine whether to dismiss the allegation or apply sanction(s)." “If the student chooses not to participate, the PIR will use the ‘preponderance of evidence’ standard to make a determination as to whether academic integrity violation(s) more likely than not took place.” "Students found in violation of this policy may face academic sanctions such as a lower or failing grade for an activity or course, and/or university actions including but not limited to suspension or dismissal from the major/program, graduate school, or the university." "If a student's grade in a course is changed through the procedure that implements this policy that grade change cannot be subject to an appeal through the SCSU Grade Appeal Policy and Procedure."

After the initial meeting, the student has five business days to accept the finding or request a Step Two review by a college or school committee, which the policy requires to form within six duty days and meet within ten; the dean's resulting determination is final under this procedure. Source: Academic Integrity Policy & Procedure (3.05.1). The Student Code of Community Standards governs separately where a finding is referred to the Office of Community Standards for additional conduct sanctions. What any of this means for a particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Revision history of this page

2026-10-06 — Page created by an automated scheduled pass; no human review is claimed for this entry. First-party material captured from seven stcloudstate.edu/services.stcloudstate.edu/policies.stcloudstate.edu pages plus the Minnesota State systemwide generative-AI guidance PDF, all retrieved this date. Source dates: the Academic Integrity Policy & Procedure states an effective date of Feb 28, 2014 and a last-updated date of Jul 29, 2026; the KB article on faculty uploading coursework to AI tools was created Aug 14, 2023 and modified Nov 18, 2025; the Student Code of Community Standards, Office of Community Standards page, and Dean of Students contact page carry no on-page revision date; the Minnesota State systemwide PDF is undated on its face and was re-verified unchanged from its first use at mankato.html (Sep 21, 2026 capture). Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) came back empty on stcloudstate.edu and services.stcloudstate.edu. Category sweep checked the IT knowledge base's Artificial Intelligence category (11 articles; one, KB 146836, states directly that no AI-detection or plagiarism-detection service is approved for campus use) and the Academic Technologies support page (names only D2L Brightspace and an unnamed proctoring category). REUSED RATHER THAN RE-DERIVED, per this pass's instruction to reuse established research: the Minnesota State systemwide detection-tool caution, first resolved at mankato (entry 137, built 2026-09-21) and re-verified unchanged against the PDF directly this date. Ombuds/advocacy searched ("ombudsperson," "ombuds," "student advocacy") and not found as a distinct, independent office; "Student Advocacy and Assistance" is listed among the Dean of Students Office's own programs, the same office that administers the Office of Community Standards, and is not described as independent, confidential, or scoped to academic-integrity allegations, so it is not substituted for an ombuds. Recording of academic-integrity meetings is not addressed anywhere in the policy or procedure and is recorded above as not stated. Nothing is paraphrase-pending. Internet Archive captures: not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-06).
