Detection status
No AI-writing detector is named as deployed on SIUE's own IT, faculty-development, or policy pages across a named-vendor and category sweep; Turnitin and iThenticate are confirmed only for plagiarism/similarity checking, and the University's own suggested syllabus statement prohibits unauthorized generative-AI use as an academic-policy violation without naming any detection tool

Turnitin and iThenticate confirmed for plagiarism checking only; no AI-writing detector named

SIUE's Information Technology Services describes Turnitin in its Knowledge Base article "Blackboard Ultra (Faculty) – Turnitin Assignments: Enable Turnitin on an Assignment" (no page-stated date; retrieved Oct 3, 2026):

"Turnitin is a plagiarism prevention and detection tool integrated into Blackboard Ultra. When Turnitin is enabled in the assignment settings of a Blackboard Ultra course, a Similarity Report is generated."

No AI-writing score, AI-detection percentage, or similar feature is mentioned anywhere in that article or in the companion ITS news post comparing Blackboard and Turnitin assignment tools. The Center for Faculty Development and Innovation's "Plagiarism Prevention" resource page separately names iThenticate, scoped explicitly to "Faculty and Graduate Students Only" — a research-manuscript tool, not a classroom AI-writing detector. Sources: Enable Turnitin on an Assignment — SIUE Knowledge Base and Plagiarism Prevention — Center for Faculty Development and Innovation.

A named-vendor sweep of siue.edu and kb.siue.edu (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the ITS Knowledge Base's Turnitin and AI categories, the Center for Faculty Development and Innovation's plagiarism and generative-AI resources, the syllabus-guidance Knowledge Base article, and the Student Academic Code) found no AI-writing-detection tool named anywhere. NOT DISQUALIFIED: an empty inventory, not a documented deactivation. The ITS Knowledge Base's syllabus-guidance article supplies a "University suggested statement" for instructors under the heading "University Guidance on Artificial Intelligence": "Unless expressly allowed by the instructor, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and applications (including ChatGPT, DALL-E, and others) to produce content for course assignments and assessments is a violation of SIUE's academic policy and is prohibited" — a conduct rule instructors are encouraged to adopt, naming no detection mechanism for enforcing it. Source: Syllabus (Faculty): University Policies and Guidance — SIUE Knowledge Base. A separate faculty-center PDF, How to Create a Generative AI Policy that's right for you, is a generic, vendor-authored (Packback) syllabus-policy template linked from SIUE's faculty-development page rather than an SIUE institutional statement; it names no detector either and is not treated as SIUE's own voice.

What the Student Academic Code (3C2) says about how cases proceed

Who may be present
A student has the right "[t]o be accompanied to a hearing by either an advisor (non-attorney) or an attorney for the purpose of receiving advice or assistance; advisors or attorneys shall not participate directly in a hearing, except as such participation is required by operative law or regulations in a specific instance." On recording: "Provisions shall be made by those hearing the case for an accurate record of all hearings by audio recording or other appropriate means," and separately, the hearing Chair "shall be responsible for provisions for keeping an accurate record of the proceedings of the hearing(s) by audio recorder or other appropriate means. The record shall be the property of the University." Source: Student Academic Code (3C2), Procedural Rights and Faculty Hearing Panel sections.
What follows on the record
The Academic Code itself states only that "[a]ll proceedings, testimony, findings, recommendations, decisions, and the names of the parties involved in any closed hearings are confidential and shall not be disclosed to anyone not involved in or not responsible for the disposition of the hearing or case, unless such disclosure is required by law" — no transcript-notation or records-retention period is stated for academic-misconduct cases specifically. SIUE's separate, general Student Conduct Code (3C1) — a different policy, administered by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students rather than the Provost — does state a transcript rule for its own cases: "When... a student is suspended, the fact that suspension was imposed must be posted on the academic transcript for the duration of the suspension. When a student is expelled, the fact that expulsion was imposed must be posted on the academic transcript permanently." That provision is not stated to extend to academic-misconduct separations decided under the Academic Code's own, separate process. The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

The Student Academic Code (3C2), approved by the President effective Aug. 13, 2019 (issued Aug. 16, 2019; retrieved Oct 3, 2026), states the evidentiary standard and the appeal path:

"The person bringing or prosecuting a charge has the burden of proof by the preponderance of evidence." On appeal: "Either party to a decision may appeal the decision of the Provost by filing a written appeal to the Chancellor, or the Chancellor's designee ("Chancellor"), within five (5) days of receipt of the decision." Appeals are limited to three purposes: "to determine whether the original hearing was conducted in conformity with the prescribed procedures herein," "to determine whether the sanctions imposed were appropriate for the violations," or "to consider new evidence or facts sufficient to alter a decision that were not brought out in the original hearing because such evidence or facts were not known or available through reasonable inquiry at the time of the hearing."

Revision history of this page

2026-10-03 — Page created. Cold build; no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (the ITS Knowledge Base's Turnitin articles, the Center for Faculty Development and Innovation's plagiarism and generative-AI resources, the syllabus-guidance Knowledge Base article, and the Student Academic Code) found Turnitin and iThenticate confirmed for plagiarism/similarity checking only, with no AI-writing-detection feature named anywhere. NOT DISQUALIFIED: empty inventory, not a documented deactivation. MISLEADING-AI-SUMMARY TRAP AVOIDED, THE HEADLINE CARE OF THIS BUILD: generic web-search AI summaries twice asserted specific, false SIUE facts — first, that "Turnitin had an AI detection feature on a trial basis until December 31, 2023, but the University decided not to fund it, so the AI detection tool was dropped from SIUE's Turnitin license agreement"; second, that "Faculty may use external AI detectors such as GPTZero." Neither claim traces to any siue.edu or kb.siue.edu page: the cited ITS news post ("What assignment tool to use for my courses?") never mentions AI detection at all, being a plain Blackboard-vs-Turnitin comparison, and no first-party SIUE page names GPTZero anywhere. Both claims would have produced a page stating something SIUE's own sources do not — a disqualification finding built on a hallucinated trial-and-drop narrative would have been a serious, avoidable error, caught only by fetching and reading the actual cited page directly rather than trusting the summary. Neither claim is used here. TWO-POLICY CARE: a generic faculty-center PDF, How to Create a Generative AI Policy that's right for you, is explicitly a Packback-authored (with Claude.AI, per its own "About the authors" page) syllabus-policy template linked from SIUE's faculty-development page, not an SIUE institutional policy or statement; its generic six-section template and example language (including a prohibitive/flexible/required framework) are not attributed to SIUE and are not quoted as SIUE's own voice. The actual SIUE-attributed AI-use rule lives instead in the ITS Knowledge Base's syllabus-guidance article, as a "University suggested statement" instructors are "encouraged to modify" — an earlier draft of this page misattributed that statement to the Student Academic Code (3C2) itself, which does not mention AI anywhere; corrected before gating to cite the actual syllabus-guidance article. PROCESS: Student Academic Code (3C2, approved by the President effective Aug. 13, 2019) supplies the preponderance-of-the-evidence standard, an Advisor-or-attorney right (non-participating except as required by law), a University-recorded hearing, a confidentiality rule for closed-hearing proceedings, and a five-day appeal window to the Chancellor on three named grounds — but states no transcript-notation or records-retention period for academic-misconduct cases specifically. TWO-SYSTEM DIVERGENCE, NOT RESOLVED: the separate, general Student Conduct Code (3C1), administered by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students rather than the Provost, does carry a transcript-posting rule for suspension (posted "for the duration of the suspension") and expulsion (posted "permanently") under its own process — reproduced in the source map and section 02 for completeness, but not read as extending to a 3C2 academic-misconduct separation, since the Code's own text does not cross-reference it; this is a gap in SIUE's own publications, not a reading this page supplies. OFFICE: Office of the Provost and Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Rendleman Hall 3102, Campus Box 1021, Edwardsville, IL 62026, 618-650-3772 — confirmed first-party from the office's own contact page, which publishes no central office email; none is substituted. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED AND NOT FOUND, TRAP AVOIDED: SIUE's Faculty Ombuds Service is confirmed first-party to serve only "those who teach on the SIUE campuses, including full-time and part-time faculty and administrators" — explicitly faculty/administrator-only, not a student resource, so "None located" is used instead. A 2016 news item naming a "student ombudsman" role within a since-restructured Office of Student Affairs could not be corroborated on any current first-party page and is not used. A "Student Care and Advocacy Network (SCAN)" was also checked: SIUE's own page describes it as a multi-office concern-referral network (Dean of Students, ACCESS, Equal Opportunity Access and Title IX, Academic Affairs, and Counseling Service staff) for reporting concerns about a student's well-being, not an independent advocate for a student already facing an academic-integrity charge, so it is not substituted either. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-03).
