SNHU's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case. SNHU's Student Handbook publishes separate academic-integrity processes for online courses and for campus courses, and it sends campus students to the AI rules in each course syllabus, so the syllabus and the course are among the relevant sources. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

What SNHU's own pages say about detection

SNHU's Shapiro Library documents Turnitin as a similarity checker that faculty use course by course. The library's FAQ states that Turnitin “is a plagiarism prevention system used by faculty at SNHU” (page last updated Aug 25, 2026; retrieved Sep 29, 2026):

"If Turnitin is being used in a course, a student submits a paper and Turnitin checks it for plagiarism against content on the web, other student papers, and selected online library databases. Your instructor will see the Turnitin report for assignments along with your submission, and can provide you with a copy at your request."

Source: What is a plagiarism checker and where can I find one? — SNHU Library FAQ. The library's citation guide adds that “TurnItIn is only visible to instructors” and that a student “can ask your instructor for a copy of your report” (page metadata dated Sep 17, 2026; retrieved Sep 29, 2026): Plagiarism Checkers — Citing Your Sources, Shapiro Library.

Both library pages describe matching against existing sources. Neither mentions AI-writing detection. No SNHU page reviewed here states whether Turnitin's AI-writing indicator is turned on, who sees its output, or what weight SNHU gives it. SNHU's university AI page lists the AI tools it is piloting, and none of them is a detector: “We are piloting several AI tools, including CoPilot for Office 365, ChatGPT Enterprise, and Latimer.” (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 29, 2026) · Artificial Intelligence at SNHU — Policy, Vision & FAQs.

What was searched: SNHU's own public pages (snhu.edu, the Shapiro Library guides and FAQ, and the 2026–2027 Student Handbook) for Turnitin, the Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus and Examity. Only Turnitin appears. SNHU's Brightspace help, IT service catalogue and faculty-training site sit behind SNHU sign-in and were not reviewed.

On AI use itself, the Student Handbook's Guidelines for AI Use tell online students: “You are expected to complete your assignments without substantive assistance from any tools, including GenAI.” For campus students: “Students are to follow AI course policy as stated within the course syllabus or risk violating SNHU’s Academic Integrity Policy resulting in academic sanctions.” (Student Handbook 2026–2027, document modified Sep 18, 2026; retrieved Sep 29, 2026) · SNHU Student Handbook 2026–2027 (PDF).

02Published procedure

What SNHU's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
“A student may have a faculty or staff advisor present at the hearing.” On recording, the handbook addresses only the University's own: “A hearing officer or disciplinary board may audio or video record the hearing if it is deemed appropriate.” Both come from the handbook's general hearing guidelines in the Student Conduct Process; the Academic Integrity Process section does not restate them. — Student Handbook 2026–2027 (document modified Sep 18, 2026; retrieved Sep 29, 2026) · SNHU Student Handbook 2026–2027 (PDF)
What follows on the record
On disclosure to outside agencies: “Only notices of probation, suspension, or dismissal will be included in the student’s record unless the outside agency specifically requests all formal sanctions.” On the lightest outcome: “An educational letter is part of a student’s record in case a similar violation occurs in the future, though it is not reported as a violation should an outside agency inquire about a student’s conduct record.” Transcript notation for an academic-integrity finding is not stated in the sources reviewed. — Student Handbook 2026–2027, Conduct Records and Additional Sanctions (document modified Sep 18, 2026; retrieved Sep 29, 2026) · SNHU Student Handbook 2026–2027 (PDF)

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution’s own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

From the Student Handbook's Academic Integrity Process, which by its own terms “applies to all students enrolled in courses online, in person,” and in competency-based programs and professional development courses. For online courses:

"When an instructor becomes aware of a possible academic integrity violation, they should contact the student as soon as possible by email to make the student aware of the concern and file a Student Conduct & Academic Integrity Concern Form with the Office of Community Standards." "The Community Standards Manager assigned to the case will investigate the allegation. Based on the evidence, the manager will determine whether the allegations were founded or unfounded and, if necessary, will impose the appropriate sanctions. If sanctions are imposed, the student and the instructor will be notified by email."

For campus courses, the handbook sets a different first step and separates informal from formal cases:

"When a faculty member becomes aware of a possible academic integrity violation, they must contact the student by email within three business days to make the student aware of the concern." "The faculty member must hold a one-on-one meeting with the student to discuss the allegation, and clarify and reset the course expectations." "If the student disputes the allegation or the issue is unresolved, the matter proceeds with the formal process, in which the report will be reviewed by the Office of Community Standards."

On the standard of proof, from the handbook's hearing guidelines:

"Hearing decisions are made based upon a preponderance of the information presented – whether a violation of University policy more likely than not occurred."

On appeals, the Student Conduct Process states that a student “found in violation of the Student Code of Conduct or Academic Integrity Policy may file a written appeal,” and:

"The appeal must be submitted within five business days of the decision being made. If the appeal is reviewed, a decision will be made within 10 business days of receipt."

The campus process adds: “If the student initiates an appeal, the Associate Dean/Dean will coordinate with the Office of Community Standards for a review of the appeal within 10 business days.” Source for all of the above: SNHU Student Handbook 2026–2027 (PDF) (document modified Sep 18, 2026; retrieved Sep 29, 2026).

The Shapiro Library's guide for online instructors, instructor-facing and quoted because it describes the process a student experiences, states: “A student conduct and academic integrity manager will review the report filed and any documentation submitted by the instructor to determine if there was a violation of the Academic Honesty Policy.” and “If there was a policy violation, your student will receive a letter via their SNHU email.” (guide metadata dated Mar 11, 2026; retrieved Sep 29, 2026) · Online Instructors — Academic Integrity, Shapiro Library.

What any of this means for a particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Revision history of this page

2026-09-29 — Page created at the owner's direction, in an attended session, from SNHU's Deferred entry in QUEUE.md; the owner directed the build to proceed without the step-2 disqualification check gating it. All quotations retrieved this date from first-party sources: the SNHU Student Handbook 2026–2027 (PDF, document modified Sep 18, 2026), the Shapiro Library FAQ on plagiarism checkers (last updated Aug 25, 2026), the library's Plagiarism Checkers guide page (metadata Sep 17, 2026), the library's Online Instructors guide (metadata Mar 11, 2026), and the Artificial Intelligence at SNHU page (no on-page date). The AI page returns HTTP 403 to plain fetches and was read in a browser; that read is retained with the packet. Detector sweep: the named-vendor list recorded in section 01, over snhu.edu, the Shapiro Library guides and FAQ, and the Student Handbook; only Turnitin appears, described as a similarity checker. Categories that came back empty or unreachable: no LMS tool list, IT service catalogue or faculty-training page was publicly reachable (Brightspace help, the ServiceNow portal and the COLT SharePoint site require SNHU sign-in). Ombuds: no ombuds or student-advocacy office located on SNHU's own pages. An SNHU ombuds FAQ hosted by an outside firm (mwi.org) describes a program for SNHU staff and faculty, run by a team based outside SNHU; it is not first-party and does not serve students generally, so it is not presented. Deliberate omissions: the handbook's student-organization conduct process (it says no student or advisor may record, but it is scoped to student organizations) and the Title IX provisions. Internet Archive captures: to be added. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-29).
