01Detection status

No AI-text detector is confirmed adopted by SCSU

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the Buley Library's two plagiarism/AI guides and the Academic Misconduct Policy below) across southernct.edu found SafeAssign confirmed as the Blackboard-integrated similarity tool "available to SCSU users," and Turnitin, iThenticate, and five other AI-text detectors presented only as general reference options with no statement that SCSU has adopted any of them.

The library's "Resources for Faculty" guide (Last Updated: Jul 14, 2026; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) lists plagiarism-detection tools generically, including: "SafeAssign is a plagiarism detection tool that integrates with the Blackboard Learn course system (available to SCSU users). It allows faculty and students to check work against a comprehensive index of documents available through the Internet." The same list separately describes Turnitin only as "the leading academic plagiarism checker technology for teachers and students," noting it "Requires subscription" — with no statement that SCSU holds one. Source: Resources for Faculty — Buley Library.

The library's companion "AI Detectors" guide (same Last Updated date; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) curates six third-party AI-text detectors — AI Detector Pro, CopyLeaks, GPTZero, Scribbr, Turnitin's AI Writing Detector, and Winston — as options for instructors to consider, not as tools SCSU has deployed. Of Turnitin specifically, it states: "Requires a subscription and there have been mixed reviews, but Turnitin's other features are used by many universities." The guide separately cautions: "AI detectors can result in both false negatives and false positives, which can result in tagging a student paper as written by AI when it wasn't," and links an arXiv study on the finding that detectors are "biased against non-native English writers." Source: AI Detectors — Buley Library. NOT DISQUALIFIED: this is an inventory of reference material with no SCSU-adoption statement for any AI-text detector, not a documented deactivation.

What the Academic Misconduct Policy says about how cases proceed

Who may be present
The Academic Misconduct Policy (FS Approved April 14, 2021) states: "The Student shall have the right to be accompanied by an advisor or support person, who is a silent non-participant in the hearing, and who may not provide written testimony." On recording: "The University shall make an audio recording of the hearing. The recording shall be the property of the University. No other recordings shall be made by any person during the hearing. Upon request, the Student shall be allowed to review the recording."
What follows on the record
Not stated in the sources reviewed for a sustained finding short of a hearing-panel sanction. The policy states only that "The OSC shall retain records of all reported cases of academic misconduct," without a stated retention period, transcript notation, or disclosure rule; annual aggregate reporting to the Faculty Senate and Provost is confidential and names no individual student.

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

The Academic Misconduct Policy (retrieved Oct 15, 2026) places initial authority with the instructor: "These guidelines are based on the principle that the faculty has oversight over academic honesty, including the authority and responsibility to impose appropriate penalties when academic misconduct occurs." The policy states no labeled evidentiary standard anywhere in its text — no "preponderance" or similar phrase appears — leaving the finding to the instructor's "professional judgment of the severity of misconduct," reviewed on appeal by a Faculty Hearing Panel.

"A Faculty Hearing Panel shall be convened when one or more of the following conditions are satisfied:" "a Student seeks to appeal the Instructor's finding of misconduct;" "a Student's record of prior academic misconduct reaches two reported instances of academic misconduct while at Southern Connecticut State University;" "the Director of the OSC determines that there has been an egregious violation as reported by the Instructor." "A Student has the right to appeal an Instructor's finding of academic misconduct or sanctions issued within five (5) days of being notified of sanctions by the Instructor or the Department." "The Student may appeal the decision of the Hearing Panel to the Provost. ... An appeal may be brought on four grounds: (a) a claim that an error in the hearing procedure substantially affected the decision; (b) a claim that new evidence or information material to the case was not known at the time of the hearing; (c) a claim that the academic sanctions imposed were not appropriate for violation of the Code for which the Student was found responsible; d) a claim that the academic sanction imposed is a palpable injustice." "The decision of the Provost shall be rendered within ten (10) days of receipt of an appeal of the Hearing Panel's decision. The decision of the Provost shall be final and there shall be no further right of appeal."

Instructor-level sanctions "may include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following": "a reduced grade for the assignment in question," "the opportunity to revise the assignment," "a grade of F for the assignment in question," or "a grade of F for the course." During a pending Student appeal, "[t]he grade given for that class shall not be considered final until the appeal process is complete. The grade shall be entered as an 'I+' by the Instructor until the end of the following semester or until the appeal is finalized." Revision history of this page

2026-10-15 — Page created. Cold build; no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (the Buley Library's two plagiarism/AI guides and the Academic Misconduct Policy) found SafeAssign confirmed as the Blackboard-integrated similarity tool available to SCSU users, and Turnitin plus five other AI-text detectors (AI Detector Pro, CopyLeaks, GPTZero, Scribbr, Winston, and iThenticate for plagiarism specifically) presented by the library only as generic reference options, with no statement anywhere on southernct.edu that SCSU licenses or has deployed any of them for AI-writing detection specifically. NOT DISQUALIFIED: an inventory of reference material, not a documented deactivation — careful not to overstate this as either an adoption or a disqualification. SLUG NOTE: "scsu" was already assigned to St. Cloud State University (built 2026-10-06) in this collection; "southernct" was chosen instead to avoid the collision, and nothing from the St. Cloud State page was read or carried over. PROCESS CAPTURED FROM THE ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT POLICY (FS Approved April 14, 2021): no labeled evidentiary standard anywhere in the text — confirmed by a direct search for "preponderance" and related terms, which returned nothing; the finding rests on the instructor's professional judgment, reviewed on appeal by a Faculty Hearing Panel on four stated grounds. RECORDING ADDRESSED: an official audio recording is made and retained by the University; no other recording by any person is permitted; the student may request to review it. RECORD ABSENCE NAMED: the policy states only that the OSC retains records of all reported cases, with no stated retention period, transcript-notation symbol, or disclosure rule for a sustained finding. OFFICE: the policy itself names only the "Office of Student Conduct (OSC)" without its own contact block; the docket uses the office's current public name, "Student Conduct and Civic Responsibility," and its published address and phone from the Dean of Students site, since the policy PDF carries none of its own. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED AND NOT FOUND: no office titled ombudsperson, ombudsman, or student advocate was located anywhere on southernct.edu in this review; the Dean of Students Office describes itself as "a sounding board for student ideas, needs and issues and as an adviser to committees and major student governing groups," with no academic-integrity role and no claim of neutrality, confidentiality, or independence, so it is not substituted for an ombuds. A 2023 Faculty Senate packet surfaced in this search questioned whether this 2021 policy document still reflects current practice and asked the OSC to clarify; no first-party page states a supersession, so the 2021 text is used as the most recent policy document located, and this open question is recorded rather than resolved. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-15).
