Detection status
No AI-text detector documented. Turnitin is confirmed in use at TSU's eLearn LMS only as GradeMark, described by Academic Affairs as a tool for marking a student's paper in the eLearn Dropbox — not a similarity-checking or AI-writing-detection feature; no tnstate.edu source documents either. Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor is listed for exam support, an identity/behavior-monitoring tool, with no AI-text-detection claim.

TSU's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — the Office of Academic Affairs' own guidelines let each instructor choose among stated generative-AI syllabus statements, so your course syllabus is also a relevant source. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

No AI-text detector is documented at TSU

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (Academic Affairs' continuity-of-instruction page for eLearn tools, the Libraries' Artificial Intelligence LibGuide, and the undergraduate catalog's Academic and Classroom Conduct section) across tnstate.edu found no AI-text detector documented.

Academic Affairs' Continuity of Instruction page (retrieved Oct 16, 2026) lists, among tools faculty can get help with:

"Turnitin GradeMark (a tool that allows an instructor to mark on a student's paper right in the eLearn Dropbox) or Panopto."

The same page names "the Respondus Lockdown Browser / Monitor" in the same list. Source: Continuity of Instruction — Academic Affairs. GradeMark is an annotation tool for marking a submitted paper, not a similarity-checking or AI-writing-detection feature; Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor is an exam-proctoring system. Neither page makes an AI-text-detection claim for either tool, so neither is presented here as a detector — they are recorded in the category sweep.

The Libraries' Artificial Intelligence LibGuide, "Class Use of AI" (Last Updated: Sep 17, 2026; retrieved Oct 16, 2026), states that under guidelines set by TSU's Office of Academic Affairs, each instructor chooses one of three statements for a course, including: "Intellectual honesty is vital to an academic community and for fair evaluation of your work. Generative AI including but not limited to ChatGPT is not permitted. Use of such tools in this course, will violate the University Code of Honor Policy and will be treated as plagiarism." No detector is named anywhere in the guide. Source: Artificial Intelligence (AI) — TSU Libraries & Media Center. The same guide links to "TSU's Current AI Policy" as the "Current TSU AI Guide"; that link (tnstate.edu/board/TSU Proposed AI Policy.pdf) returned HTTP 404 on direct fetch this date and is recorded here as a dead first-party link, not used as a source.

Process-based verification: a bounded first-party sweep of the pages above, plus one site search for institution-published guidance on verifying authorship by process — drafts, in-class writing, oral follow-up — rather than detector output, found nothing published. The absence is recorded at this scope.

What TSU's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
Not stated for the course-level academic-misconduct provision in the 2026-2027 Undergraduate Catalog. For a formal citation under the Code of Student Conduct, the Office of Student Conduct's FAQ states: "it is your choice to be accompanied by a lawyer. If you elect to bring an attorney, they may not speak or present evidence on your behalf." Recording of either proceeding is not addressed in either source.
What follows on the record
Not stated in the sources reviewed. The Office of Student Conduct's FAQ states only that "Failure to attend the Pre-Hearing Conference could result in a hold being placed on your account, which would prevent you from registering for classes, or receiving a transcript" — an administrative hold, not a notation. No transcript notation, retention period, or disclosure provision for a sustained finding is published in either source.

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

The 2026-2027 Undergraduate Catalog's University Academic Information section, under "Academic and Classroom Conduct" (retrieved Oct 16, 2026; client-rendered catalog platform, captured by browser — see change log), states:

"Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. In addition to the other possible disciplinary sanctions that may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an "F" or a zero for the exercise or examination, or to assign an "F" in the course." "If the student believes that he or she has been erroneously accused of academic misconduct, and if his or her final grade has been lowered as a result, the student may appeal the case through the appropriate institutional procedures (Grade Appeal)."

The catalog's Grade Appeal provision describes a written appeal chain — department chair, then Dean, then the Office of the Provost, "the decision of the Provost is final" — that an accused student may use when a grade was lowered as a result of a misconduct finding. The initiating window is stated as "within 30 calendar days of the beginning of the semester immediately following the semester in which the grade was awarded (excluding summer school)." Source: 2026-2027 Undergraduate Catalog — University Academic Information.

The catalog's academic-misconduct provision also notes that sanctions beyond the instructor's grade action may follow "through the regular institutional procedures." TSU publishes that separate, general disciplinary process under its Code of Student Conduct, administered by the Office of Student Conduct. Its FAQ (retrieved Oct 16, 2026) states:

"The citation informs the student that they have been referred to the Office of Student Conduct/Judicial for violation of University policy, specifically the TSU Student Code of Conduct. The Office of Student Conduct/Judicial Affairs will receive the report and notify you that a pre-hearing conference has been scheduled and your attendance is required." "The student may choose to reach an agreement or admit the violation (s) and accept the sanction (s) or may choose to contest the charge." "The Student Affairs Disciplinary Committee is composed of faculty, staff, and students. It is the principle judicial body for hearing violations of the university's Student Code of Conduct. You may choose to have the committee formally hear your case. The committee will determine, based upon the evidence presented at the hearing, if a violation occurred." "Generally no. Federal Law and University policy restrict our ability to disclose information about a student without his or her consent." [on parental notification]

Source: FAQ — Office of Student Conduct. The FAQ does not state an evidentiary standard, a sanctions range for a Disciplinary Committee hearing, or an appeal path from that committee's decision; none is asserted here. The Code of Student Conduct document the office's own page links as the authoritative text is published only as a scanned image PDF with no extractable text, so it could not be captured or quoted — recorded as a capture limitation in the change log, not a silent omission. What these quotations mean for any particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Revision history of this page

2026-10-16 — Page created. Cold build; no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (Academic Affairs' Continuity of Instruction page, the Libraries' Artificial Intelligence LibGuide, the undergraduate catalog's Academic and Classroom Conduct section, and the Office of Student Conduct's landing/contact/FAQ pages) across tnstate.edu found NO AI-TEXT DETECTOR DOCUMENTED. Turnitin is confirmed in institutional use only as GradeMark, an annotation tool for the eLearn Dropbox; Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor is confirmed in use only as exam proctoring. Neither page makes an AI-text-detection claim for either tool, so this is an empty detection inventory, not a disqualification — no first-party source documents a detector that was disabled or recommended against, because none is documented as deployed in the first place. PROCESS-BASED VERIFICATION SWEEP: a bounded sweep of the pages above plus one site search for drafts/in-class-writing/oral-follow-up guidance found nothing published; recorded as none-published at this scope. DEAD LINK RECORDED, NOT USED: the Libraries' AI LibGuide links "TSU's Current AI Policy" to tnstate.edu/board/TSU Proposed AI Policy.pdf, which returned HTTP 404 on direct fetch this date; the guide's own quoted text (the three instructor syllabus statements) stands on its own and was captured from the guide page itself, not from the dead link. TRANSPORT NOTE: catalog.tnstate.edu answers a plain curl fetch with an AWS WAF challenge (HTTP 202, empty body) and is client-rendered besides; its Academic and Classroom Conduct and Grade Appeal text was read and captured in a browser this date, preserved under tools/supplied/tnstate-source1.txt for the capture pipeline. CAPTURE LIMITATION, NOT AN OMISSION: the Office of Student Conduct's own page links "Code of Student Conduct" as its authoritative text; the linked file is a scanned image PDF (Producer: Microsoft Print To PDF; 14 pages, no extractable text layer), so no quotation could be drawn from it under this project's capture discipline, and none is asserted on its behalf beyond what the office's own HTML pages (landing, contact, FAQ) state in plain text. OFFICE CONTACT: the office's own Contact page names "Office of Student Conduct," Floyd Payne Student Center, First Floor, Room 103, Nashville, TN 37209, phone 615-963-2156 (and a second number, 615-963-5940, for the Assistant Dean/Student Conduct Officer); no office-wide email is published on that page. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED AND NOT FOUND: no office titled ombudsperson, ombudsman, or student advocate was located anywhere on tnstate.edu in this review. PROCESS: the catalog's course-level academic-misconduct provision (instructor-assigned "F" or zero, Grade Appeal chain to department chair/Dean/Provost, 30-calendar-day initiating window) and the Office of Student Conduct's general citation process (Pre-Hearing Conference, admit-or-contest choice, optional Student Affairs Disciplinary Committee hearing, lawyer permitted but non-speaking, parental notification generally withheld without consent) are two separately published tracks; the catalog's own text is the bridge between them ("other possible disciplinary sanctions... through the regular institutional procedures"). Neither source states an evidentiary standard, a Disciplinary Committee sanctions range, or an appeal path from a Committee decision; none is asserted here. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-16).
