No AI-writing detector is named anywhere on UAH's own pages
A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the Enhanced Teaching and Learning Center's Canvas/LTI pages, the Office of the Provost's 2023 AI task force announcement and memo, UAH Testing and Certification Services' proctored-exams pages, and the Academic Misconduct Policy below) across uah.edu found Turnitin confirmed only as a Canvas-integrated LTI tool with no AI-writing feature named, an AI-classroom guidance program that names no detection tool, and in-house proctoring services with no AI-text-detection claim. No UAH library research guide on AI detection was located in this search, and no UAH information-technology software catalog naming a detector was located in this search.
The Enhanced Teaching and Learning Center's own news item "Turnitin LTI Users Must Take Action Before Fall 2024" (dated Aug. 2, 2024; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) states only that "Turnitin has updated the its LTI integration that connects their tool to Canvas from version 1.1" and that affected instructors needed to act before the fall 2024 term — a Canvas-integration notice, not a description of what Turnitin checks. UAH's own announcement "UAH offers resources, guidelines on responsible use of AI in classroom for faculty, students" (dated Aug. 21, 2023; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) describes a campus AI Task Force, led by the ETLC's director, that built a resource site for faculty syllabus statements and classroom use of AI. It states: "Students who violate the AI policy will be subject to disciplinary action for academic misconduct." It names no detector, scanner, or AI-text-identification tool as the means of discovering a violation. Source: UAH offers resources, guidelines on responsible use of AI in classroom.
The Provost's own memorandum to faculty, "Valuable Resources on AI for Faculty" (dated July 19, 2023; retrieved Oct 15, 2026), directs faculty to the AI Task Force's website for "University Statement on AI," syllabus-statement drafts, and teaching resources, and states: "Each faculty member needs to set their classroom policy for AI in their syllabus." It names no detection tool. Source: Memorandum: Valuable Resources on AI for Faculty (PDF).
UAH Testing and Certification Services' proctored-exams page (no on-page date; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) describes an in-house proctoring service for distance-learning and certification exams and names no proctoring or detection vendor; its navigation separately lists Pearson VUE, Meazure, and Kryterion as third-party testing services, none described as analyzing writing for AI generation. Source: Proctored Exams — Testing and Certification Services. NOT DISQUALIFIED: this is an empty inventory for AI-writing detection specifically, not a documented deactivation — no UAH page states that an AI-text detector was ever adopted, piloted, or disabled.
What the Academic Misconduct Policy says about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- Policy 02.01.67 (December 2018; interim August 2019; revised July 2021) states a student "may be accompanied and advised by any one person they choose at all stages of the proceedings. This advisor, who may be an attorney, may privately consult with and advise their client, but may not question the faculty member, make statements, or otherwise directly participate in the conference discussing the matter." Recording of the instructor conference or any appeal step is not addressed either way in the policy.
- What follows on the record
- The policy states: "Records of academic misconduct shall be treated with strict confidentiality," and "In cases of successful appeals, the record and all supporting documentation shall be removed from the student's file after one semester." Where a sanction is suspension or expulsion, "the Office of the Registrar will be notified immediately... and a hold will be placed on the student's record to prevent further enrollment." Not stated in the policy: a transcript-notation symbol, a general retention period for a sustained finding, or a disclosure rule to graduate programs, employers, or licensing boards.
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
The Academic Misconduct Policy (Number 02.01.67, Division of Academic Affairs; retrieved Oct 15, 2026) states the standard of proof directly: "The 'preponderance of the evidence' standard is used in all academic misconduct cases. This means that all evidence presented must prove that it is more likely than not that the accused student committed the misconduct for which she or he is accused." Plagiarism is defined within academic dishonesty as "the use of any other person's work... and the unacknowledged incorporation of that work in one's own work offered in fulfillment of academic requirements," which includes "the use and incorporation, without acknowledgement, of the wording or expressions (even if paraphrased), information, facts, arguments, analysis, or ideas of another" — the definition an AI-writing accusation would be charged under, since the policy names no separate AI-specific provision.
A further appeal runs, in order and each within 10 business days of the prior decision, to the college's Academic Misconduct Monitor, then to the dean, then to the Associate Provost for Academic Integrity within the Office of Academic Affairs, who convenes the Academic Misconduct Board; "The Provost will make a decision within 15 business days and may ask for a 15 business day extension, if needed. The decision of the Provost is final." Sanctions "include but are not limited to verbal reprimand, assignment of additional work... assignment grade-reduction for the specific assignment or exam where misconduct occurred, a failing grade in the course, dismissal from an academic program, and suspension and/or expulsion from the University." Revision history of this page
2026-10-15 — Page created. Cold build; no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (the Enhanced Teaching and Learning Center's Canvas/LTI pages, the 2023 AI Task Force announcement and Provost memo, UAH Testing and Certification Services' proctored-exams pages, a search for a UAH library AI-research guide, and a search for a UAH information-technology software catalog) found Turnitin confirmed only as a Canvas-integrated LTI tool with no AI-writing feature named anywhere on uah.edu, the 2023 AI classroom guidance naming no detection tool, and in-house plus third-party (Pearson VUE, Meazure, Kryterion) test-delivery services with no AI-text-detection claim. NOT DISQUALIFIED: an empty inventory for AI-writing detection, not a documented deactivation. NO UAH LIBRARY AI-RESEARCH GUIDE OR IT SOFTWARE CATALOG NAMING A DETECTOR WAS LOCATED IN THIS SEARCH — stated as the scope actually searched, not as an exhaustive negative. PROCESS SCOPE NOTE, DELIBERATE: UAH's own Ethics and Compliance page (uah.edu/compliance/ethics) separately routes "Wrongful Conduct involving students, including academic misconduct" to the Office of Student Ethics & Education (Dean of Students, Charger Union Suite 223, 256.824.6700) and to the Charger 360 online reporting tool's "Student Conduct Referral" form, which covers "suspected violations of the Student Code of Conduct" including "reports of dishonesty." Neither that page nor the Charger 360 form states how this reporting route relates to the instructor-initiated procedure set out in Policy 02.01.67, which names no role for the Dean of Students or Charger 360 anywhere in its text. Section 02 above describes only Policy 02.01.67, which is the document that defines plagiarism and academic dishonesty and sets the evidentiary standard and appeal path; the Ethics/Compliance routing is named here only so the two are not conflated, following the same approach taken on other pages where an institution publishes more than one reporting channel. ABSENCE RECORDED, NOT INFERRED: Policy 02.01.67 states no transcript-notation symbol, no general record-retention period for a sustained (non-appealed) finding, and no disclosure rule to graduate programs, employers, or licensing boards; none of the other sources captured states one either. OFFICE CONTACT: the policy names the "Associate Provost for Academic Integrity within the Office of Academic Affairs" as the final appeal step but the Office of Academic Affairs' own current staff-contact page lists no one under that exact title; rather than naming a possibly superseded individual, the docket uses the Office of Academic Affairs' own published address and main line. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED AND NOT FOUND: no office titled ombudsperson, ombudsman, or student advocate was located anywhere on uah.edu in this review; the Dean of Students Office (Charger Union 223) states it "provides assistance and support services to students, faculty, and staff of the UAH community," is not described by the University as independent, confidential, or neutral, and administers the separate Code of Student Conduct rather than Policy 02.01.67, so it is not substituted here for an ombuds. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-15).
