Detection status
Turnitin confirmed for similarity/plagiarism checking; the Code of Student Conduct lists "[t]he unauthorized use of artificial intelligence sites, such as ChatGPT, Google Translate, etc." as an academic-dishonesty violation — a conduct rule, not a detection tool — and no AI-text detector is named anywhere on uco.edu
Office in these sources
Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Resolution · Nigh University Center, Room 323 · 405-974-5380 · studentconduct@uco.edu
Ombuds or advocacy office
UCO's Office of Student Advocacy (Nigh University Center, Room 124 · advocacy@uco.edu · 405-974-5390) is student-facing, but its own published list of services — money coaching, academic-success strategies, enrollment troubleshooting, returning to complete a degree, and campus-resource referrals — does not name academic-integrity or misconduct allegations among them, and the office is not described by UCO as independent, confidential, or neutral. No office matching that description was located on uco.edu in this review.

01Detection status

Unauthorized AI use is prohibited by policy; no detection tool is named

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the University Libraries' plagiarism and "Plagiarism and AI" guides, the IT knowledge base, and the Code of Student Conduct) found Turnitin confirmed for similarity/plagiarism checking, and no AI-text detector named anywhere on uco.edu.

The University Libraries' plagiarism guide (Last Updated Aug 4, 2026; retrieved Sep 27, 2026) states: "Your professors uses Turn It In to determine how much of your paper is original and/or plagiarised" — similarity checking, with no AI-writing-detection feature named. Source: Turn It In — University Libraries. The Libraries' companion "Plagiarism and AI" guide (same retrieval date) covers citing AI tools and the risk of fabricated citations, and likewise names no detection tool. Source: Plagiarism and AI — University Libraries.

The Code of Student Conduct (2026-27 edition; retrieved Sep 27, 2026) instead addresses AI as a conduct rule, in its Academic Dishonesty Policy's list of violations:

"The unauthorized use of artificial intelligence sites, such as ChatGPT, Google Translate, etc." "Using materials not authorized by the professor or instructor, including, but not limited to teaching resources, artificial intelligence platforms, or test banks."

Source: UCO Code of Student Conduct 2026-27 (PDF). This defines unauthorized AI use as a violation a student can be charged with; it is not a statement that any tool detects such use. Your syllabus and assignment instructions are therefore among the relevant sources for your own situation.

What UCO's Code of Student Conduct says about how cases proceed

Who may be present
"Students may be accompanied by an advisor of their choice during any interview, informal resolution or formal resolution hearing, at their own expense. The advisor may be an attorney." UCO also offers a free "Procedural Advisor" service. Formal hearings are recorded: "Formal hearings shall be recorded." — Code of Student Conduct 2026-27 (retrieved Sep 27, 2026) · Code of Student Conduct (PDF)
What follows on the record
Suspension and expulsion may carry a transcript notation "at the discretion of the Director of Student Accountability and Conflict Resolution or their designee." Short of that: "Other than University suspension, expulsion, degree revocation, or transcript notation, outcomes shall not be made part of the student's permanent academic record, but shall only become part of the student's private education records." — Code of Student Conduct 2026-27 (retrieved Sep 27, 2026) · Code of Student Conduct (PDF)

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

Academic dishonesty "may be handled by the instructor of record or the Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Resolution," per the Code's Academic Dishonesty Policy; where a matter proceeds through the Office, the Code's general student-conduct procedure governs. On the evidentiary standard (retrieved Sep 27, 2026):

"The President of the University of Central Oklahoma delegates to the Assistant Vice President for Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator or the Vice President's designees the authority to investigate potential or alleged violations of University regulations or law and to determine and administer appropriate outcomes using a preponderance of evidence standard." "Students may be accompanied by an advisor of their choice during any interview, informal resolution or formal resolution hearing, at their own expense. The advisor may be an attorney." "Formal hearings shall be recorded. Such recordings shall be maintained for such time as required under state law and as necessary to protect the record through any further review." "A suspension hold may be placed on the transcript during the period of suspension. Likewise, a notation of the suspension may be placed on the student's academic transcript at the discretion of the Director of Student Accountability and Conflict Resolution or their designee." "When a student is expelled, a notation of the expulsion will be placed on the student's academic transcript at the discretion of the Director of Student Accountability and Conflict Resolution or their designee." "All appeal requests must be completed and signed by the appealing Party, and received by the Assistant Vice President for Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator, or their designee, within three (3) business days after the date the Notice of Outcome was transmitted to the parties."

Source: UCO Code of Student Conduct 2026-27 (PDF). An appeal is "limited to a review of the record of the original investigation, hearing, finding of responsibility, outcomes assigned, and/or hearing procedures" on one or more stated grounds (procedural error among them); it is not a rehearing. What any of this means for a particular case is for the institution and its process to determine; these are reproduced so you can read the originals in context.

Revision history of this page

2026-09-27 — Page created by a scheduled, unattended build pass. All quotations retrieved this date from uco.edu and library.uco.edu pages linked beside them, and from the Code of Student Conduct, which itself displays "2026-27" as its edition. Detection-inventory sweep performed: named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (University Libraries plagiarism and AI guides, IT knowledge base, Code of Student Conduct) found Turnitin confirmed for similarity/plagiarism checking (the Libraries guide, plus a "Turnitin Draft Coach for Students" IT knowledge-base article title found in the sweep but not otherwise substantive), and no AI-text detector named anywhere on uco.edu. NOT DISQUALIFIED: an empty AI-detection inventory with no first-party statement declining, disabling, or recommending against a detector — UCO's own pages are silent on AI-writing detection specifically, addressing AI only as a conduct rule (the Code's "unauthorized use of artificial intelligence sites" violation), the charleston.edu pattern of a conduct rule that is not itself a detection tool. LINK-ROT NOTE: the Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Resolution's public-facing pages have moved from uco.edu/offices/student-conduct/ to uco.edu/students/conduct/; the office's own "Forms and Publications" subpage link on its landing page pointed to a dead relative path (a 404 confirmed both by direct fetch and by a live browser read) and had to be re-found by browsing from the current landing page — this page cites the working uco.edu/students/conduct/ addresses throughout. PROCESS SOURCE: the Academic Dishonesty Policy states violations "may be handled by the instructor of record or the Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Resolution"; the preponderance standard, advisor/recording provisions, transcript-notation rule, and three-business-day appeal window are the Code's general student-conduct procedure, which was captured because the Academic Dishonesty Policy's own text does not describe a separate procedure of its own. OMBUDS TRAP CHECKED: UCO's Office of Student Advocacy is student-facing (unlike a faculty/staff-only ombuds elsewhere in this queue), but its own published service list — money coaching, academic-success strategies, enrollment troubleshooting, degree completion, resource referrals — does not name academic-integrity or misconduct allegations, and UCO does not call the office independent, confidential, or neutral; it is recorded in the docket rather than presented as a qualifying advocacy resource for a misconduct case. A separate "Academic Ombudsperson" program was located (Faculty Senate resolution, faculty-senate.uco.edu) but serves faculty only, on the office's own description, and is not presented here for that reason. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Subreddit demand scan not run (outside this run's research method). Internet Archive captures: to be added. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-27).
