UC San Diego's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case. The Academic Senate's Academic Integrity Policy (Appendix 2) states that medical and pharmacy students are governed by their own schools' policies, and the AIO's process page says its summary “does not supersede the process detailed in the Policy or Procedures.” Course syllabi and instructor rules also apply: the Policy requires instructors to state course-specific integrity rules in writing, and the Extended Studies division runs its own Canvas instance with its own Turnitin settings. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.
Turnitin similarity is in use; the AI-writing feature is documented as disabled only for Extended Studies
Main campus. The Academic Integrity Office's faculty page on Turnitin (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) describes the tool as similarity checking and states what weight the office gives its reports:
Source: Use Turnitin — Academic Integrity Office (faculty-facing). Educational Technology Services documents the Canvas integration: “Turnitin is a plagiarism-prevention service which checks student documents for unoriginal content.” Source: Turnitin — Educational Technology Services (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026). Neither page mentions Turnitin's AI-writing indicator, and no page on academicintegrity.ucsd.edu, edtech.ucsd.edu, blink.ucsd.edu or digitallearning.ucsd.edu located in this review states whether that feature is enabled in the main-campus Canvas instance. That absence is stated here as an absence in the sources reviewed, not as a finding either way.
The AIO's page on artificial intelligence in education (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) addresses AI detectors in one sentence:
Source: Artificial Intelligence in Education — Academic Integrity Office. The page names no detector product and does not state that any detector is disabled or barred as evidence.
Extended Studies. UC San Diego Extended Studies (the DES division, which runs its own Canvas instance) documents that it turned the AI-writing feature off. Its instructor help-center article (article marked updated Mar 6, 2025; retrieved Sep 9, 2026 by browser read, since the help-center host refuses plain fetches) states:
Source: AI Detection Deactivation: Instructor Action Required and Next Steps — Extended Studies Online. The division's Similarity Report guide carries the same notice: “beginning Spring 2025 quarter the Artificial Intelligence (AI) writing detection tool will be disabled in the UC San Diego Extended Studies instance of Turnitin. The Turnitin plagiarism checker tool is still fully enabled and available to use on your assignments.” Source: How to interpret the Turnitin Similarity Report (Instructors) — Extended Studies Online (article marked updated Mar 7, 2025; retrieved Sep 9, 2026). Both articles are scoped to the Extended Studies instance; neither speaks for the main campus.
Other tools. The Digital Learning Hub's proctoring page names Zoom and Respondus LockDown Browser as exam-proctoring options (“Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom web browser that is used to access quizzes in Canvas.”); neither is an AI-writing detector. Source: Proctoring Options for Assessments — Digital Learning Hub (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026). A named-vendor sweep of ucsd.edu for Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio and Examity found only an Extended Studies migration note recording that DES moved its plagiarism checker from Copyleaks to Turnitin during Fall 2024 and Winter 2025; no first-party page documents any of those products as a deployed AI-writing detector.
What UC San Diego's own documents say about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- “A student may select one advisor (internally provided by UC San Diego or externally sourced) to assist them during the process. The chosen Advisor may support, guidance, and advice to the student throughout the process and can accompany the student in a Resolution Meeting or an AI Review II, but cannot speak on behalf of their advisee, nor interrupt, disrupt or directly participate.” — Academic Integrity Policy, Appendix 2 of the Senate Manual (amendment history through May 30, 2023 with a later amendment marked Jan 13, 2026; retrieved Sep 9, 2026). On recording, the Procedures state: “No AI Review II shall be undertaken without a reliable audio recording by the presiding officer. No other recording or broadcasting device shall be allowed in the AI Review II.” — Procedures for Resolving Alleged Violations (revised May 30, 2023; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) · Appendix 2 — Academic Integrity Policy · Procedures (PDF)
- What follows on the record
- “If the administrative sanction is suspension or dismissal, the fact that a student was suspended or dismissed for academic dishonesty must be posted on the academic transcript for the duration of the sanction.” — Academic Integrity Policy, Appendix 2 (retrieved Sep 9, 2026). On retention, the AIO's FAQ states: “UC San Diego is required to retain a history of your violation for five (5) years after the end of the academic year in which your case was closed” and “if you were assigned a dismissal, the records (for all violations) are retained for fifty (50) years.” — FAQ: Disciplinary Records (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) · Appendix 2 — Academic Integrity Policy · FAQ: Disciplinary Records
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution’s own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
What the Policy covers. The Academic Senate's Academic Integrity Policy (Appendix 2; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) lists prohibited conduct, including:
Source: Appendix 2: UC San Diego Academic Integrity Policy — Academic Senate.
Reporting and notification. The Policy requires reporting to the AIO before any grade penalty: “An instructor shall not assign an academic sanction for an academic integrity violation unless they have submitted an Allegation Report […] to the AIO and there is an acceptance or final finding of responsibility.” The AIO's process page (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) describes what follows:
Source: When Cheating is Suspected — Academic Integrity Office. The Policy adds a default for non-response: “If a student does not follow the Procedures within the established timelines, or fails to attend scheduled meetings, they can be presumed to have decided to accept responsibility.”
Student rights. The AIO's student-rights page (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) states:
Source: Student's Rights — Academic Integrity Office. The AIO's Get Help page (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) describes the advisor options, including the AS Office of Student Advocacy — “a student-run organization that provides free assistance to students who are facing academic integrity or student conduct allegations” — and states that to have an advocate or external advisor “accompany you in procedural meetings (i.e., Resolution Meeting and/or AI Review)”, a FERPA release must be emailed to the AIO “at least 3 business days before the meeting would occur.” It also notes Student Legal Services with the caveat that “the academic integrity violation resolution process is NOT a legal process”. Source: Get Help — Academic Integrity Office.
Evidentiary standard. The Procedures (revised May 30, 2023; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) state, for Academic Integrity Reviews:
Source: Procedures for Resolving Alleged Violations of the UC San Diego Academic Integrity Policy (PDF). The AIO's AI Reviews page describes the two review levels: an AI Review I for students not facing separation, which “is an ‘informal hearing’ and therefore primarily a documentation review that does not normally include questioning the involved parties”, and an AI Review II for students facing suspension or dismissal, a “formal hearing” that “affords students the right to ‘present documents and witnesses’ and to ‘cross-examine witnesses presented by the University’”. Source: Academic Integrity Reviews — Academic Integrity Office (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026).
Sanctions. The AIO's consequences page (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) states: “Instructors may impose academic sanctions for the course, ranging from a 0 on the assessment to an F in the class. The grade resulting from an academic integrity violation is calculated into your GPA, even if the course is retaken.” Administrative sanctions are “Imposed based on accumulated points, according to Sanctioning Guidelines and professional judgment of Resolution AAA and/or Sanctioning Body”. Source: Consequences of Cheating — Academic Integrity Office. The Policy adds: “Students with multiple confirmed academic integrity violations shall be subject to dismissal from the University.”
Appeals. The Policy states the grounds for appealing a review determination: “(i) the stated procedures were not followed; and/or (ii) there exists newly discovered important evidence that has substantial bearing on the determination of the Review Panel.” The AIO's appeals page (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) states the window for an AIRB decision appeal: “Must be submitted within 10 business days of receiving the decision notice”, and for a sanction appeal, “Must be submitted within 10 business days of receiving the sanction letter.” It adds: “Students needing support in writing their appeals can contact the AS Office of Student Advocacy at asadvocacy@ucsd.edu.” Source: Appeals — Academic Integrity Office.
What follows on the record, in more detail. The Policy states that while a case is open “the assigned ‘X’ grade for the course will remain, but the student's transcript will show a blank grade for the course.” The AIO's graduate-school FAQ (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Sep 9, 2026) states: “You will see an internal notation next to the grade of the impacted course on your unofficial transcript/academic history (an A1, A2, A3, or A4).” and “violations do not show on it unless you are currently suspended or dismissed. Suspension notations will remain on your official transcript until your suspension is completed and Dismissals appear permanently.” On disclosure, the disciplinary-records FAQ states: “A warning is not reported out to graduate/ professional schools/employers unless you have been found responsible for a subsequent violation.” Sources: FAQ: Applying to Graduate/Professional Schools · FAQ: Disciplinary Records. What any of this means for a particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Organizing your own drafts and records to bring to any of this: the records checklist. Capturing the pages above as they read today, and keeping your own dated record beside them: what to do with these sources.
Revision history of this page
2026-09-09 — Page created. All quotations retrieved this date from the UC San Diego pages linked beside them. Source dates as published: the Academic Integrity Policy (Appendix 2) carries an amendment history ending "AM 5/30/23" in its header and an inline "AM 1/13/26" marker in its procedures section; the Procedures PDF is marked "revised 1/21/20; 08/17/20; 6/15/21; 5/30/23"; the two Extended Studies help-center articles carry update timestamps of Mar 6 and Mar 7, 2025; the remaining academicintegrity.ucsd.edu, edtech.ucsd.edu, digitallearning.ucsd.edu, ombuds.ucsd.edu and asadvocacy.ucsd.edu pages display no date. Transport: the two extensionhelpcenter.ucsd.edu articles return HTTP 403 to plain fetches and were read in the session's built-in browser; their text is retained at tools/supplied/ucsd-source4.txt and ucsd-source5.txt. Every other source was captured by curl. Detection sweep. Named-vendor sweep of ucsd.edu for Turnitin, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio and Examity; category sweep of the AIO faculty pages, EdTech instructional tools, the Digital Learning Hub integrity and proctoring pages, Blink's AI services and academic-integrity pages, the AIO's 2024 GenAI instructor guide (Google Sites), and a UC San Diego Today story on the AIO director's book. Found: Turnitin similarity in Canvas (main campus and DES); the Turnitin AI-writing feature documented as disabled in the DES instance from Spring 2025; a DES migration from Copyleaks to Turnitin during Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 (superseded, not carried to the page as a deployed tool); Respondus LockDown Browser and Zoom as proctoring options. Empty: every other named vendor; no first-party statement locating the Turnitin AI-writing indicator for the main-campus instance. The ServiceNow-hosted IT knowledge base (support.ucsd.edu) is client-rendered and returned no article text to plain fetch; a licensed detector documented only there would be invisible to this sweep. Prior queue status. QUEUE.md had listed UC San Diego as excluded on 2026-08-21 on the basis of a third-party tracker; this first-party review found the disablement scoped to Extended Studies only, with Turnitin similarity deployed campus-wide and no main-campus disablement published, and the entry was corrected. Deliberate omissions. The Reddit post that prompted this build, in which a UCSD instructor writes that a poem "came up as very likely to have been aided by AI", is third-party and is not quoted or relied on. The AIO's 2021 staff handbook PDF predates the AI-writing feature and was not used. The AIO appeals page's phrase "out-of-life with sanctioning guidelines" (the Policy reads "out-of-line") was not quoted; the Policy's wording is quoted instead. Nothing on this page is paraphrase-pending. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-09). Internet Archive captures: to be added.
2026-09-13 — Editorial review. Carrie Schluter read this page in full against its recorded first-party sources and found no change required. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-13).
