Detection status
No AI-text detector is named as deployed, disabled, or recommended against on any unco.edu page located in this review, including UNC's own 2025 AI Task Force report. The Student Code of Conduct lists "Unauthorized use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)" as a form of academic misconduct defined by lack of instructor permission, not by a detector's score.

UNC's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — UNC's own Community Standards & Conflict Resolution page directs students to their course syllabus for "academic integrity expectations... including expectations related to the use of Artificial Intelligence," so your syllabus is also a relevant source. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

No AI-text detector is documented at UNC

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the Community Standards & Conflict Resolution office pages, the Libraries' Using Information Ethically guide, and UNC's own 2025 AI Task Force report) found no AI-text detector documented anywhere on unco.edu.

The Report and Recommendations of the Artificial Intelligence Task Force (document metadata dated Jan 29, 2026; retrieved Oct 16, 2026) is UNC's most comprehensive first-party AI document and names no detection tool anywhere in its text. Under "Policy Gaps," the task force states its own recommendation directly:

"We DO NOT recommend developing a single overarching generative AI policy."

This is a task-force recommendation, not independently confirmed here as adopted University policy. Source: Report and Recommendations of the Artificial Intelligence Task Force (PDF).

Consistent with that, the Student Code of Conduct (effective for incidents reported on or after August 1, 2026; retrieved Oct 16, 2026) defines a form of academic misconduct without naming any tool:

"Unauthorized use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The use or attempted use of written content, images, tables, references, music or musical scores, or data generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tools that are not permitted by the instructor or University Official."

Source: Student Code of Conduct (PDF, "BEAR Code"). The Community Standards & Conflict Resolution office's own page (retrieved Oct 16, 2026) tells students: "For more information about the academic integrity expectations for each of your courses, including expectations related to the use of Artificial Intelligence, please review your course syllabus." Source: Community Standards and Conflict Resolution.

Process-based verification: a bounded first-party sweep of the pages above, plus one site search for institution-published guidance on verifying authorship by process — drafts, in-class writing, oral follow-up — found nothing published. The absence is recorded at this scope.

02Published process

What UNC's own pages say about how academic-misconduct cases proceed

Who may be present
The Student Code defines a "Support Person: A person chosen by the Responding Party or Impacted Party, at their expense, to assist them during a Student Code process. A Support Person is not permitted to act as a representative of the student or participate on the student's behalf." Hearings in academic-misconduct cases also allow a representative from Academic Affairs to be present. On recording: "Hearings may be audio recorded. ... The Responding Party can request that the Hearing be audio recorded," at the Responding Party's cost to obtain a transcript.
What follows on the record
"Student records, including any relevant documentation, will be maintained for a minimum of seven (7) years. ... Records for cases resulting in University/Residence Hall Suspension, University/Residence Hall Expulsion, Revocation of Admission and Revocation of Degree will be maintained indefinitely." Records may be disclosed to others with "a legitimate educational interest including, but not limited to, standards set for a student's employment, academic program eligibility, scholarship eligibility or other honorific."

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

University Regulations Section 3-2-203, "Academic Integrity and the Student Code of Conduct" (current compiled regulations PDF, revised Sept 17, 2026; retrieved Oct 16, 2026), is the bridge between a course-level finding and the general disciplinary process:

"Behavior that violates academic integrity is referred to as academic misconduct and is included in the definition of 'Misconduct,' outlined in the Student Code. The Student Code applies to issues of Academic Misconduct."

A faculty member who suspects Academic Misconduct "must submit a report to the Dean of Students" after meeting with the student; if misconduct is found, the faculty member may assign a grade-level sanction ("A grade reduction on the assignment or exam," up to "A grade of 'F' in the course"). The Student Code's own Hearing procedure confirms the link explicitly: "In cases involving allegations of Academic Misconduct, a representative from Academic Affairs may be present during the hearing." Findings use "the Preponderance of the Evidence standard," defined as "[t]he standard of information and evidence necessary to determine that something is more likely true than not." Sources: University Regulations (PDF), Section 3-2-203, and Student Code of Conduct (PDF).

DIVERGENCE RECORDED, NOT RESOLVED: Section 3-2-203(8) states that a student found responsible for Academic Misconduct "may file an appeal if allowed under the Academic Appeal Procedure found at Section 2-1-201 of the UNC Board Policy Manual." That same Academic Appeal Procedure states its own scope differently: "The AAP shall be used by students to appeal actions taken according to standards or practices that are specific to a course, discipline, program, department, school, ... or college. The AAP may not be used to appeal decisions pursuant to the University's Student Code of Conduct." Because Section 3-2-203(2) defines Academic Misconduct as falling under the Student Code, these two provisions do not plainly reconcile on their face; both are reproduced rather than resolved one way or the other. Source: Board Policy Manual, Academic Appeal Procedure (PDF), Sections 2-1-201 and 2-1-202. What these quotations mean for any particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Revision history of this page

2026-10-16 — Page created. Cold build; no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (the Community Standards & Conflict Resolution office pages, the Libraries' AI guide, and UNC's own 2025-2026 AI Task Force report) across unco.edu found NO AI-TEXT DETECTOR DOCUMENTED. NOT A DISQUALIFICATION: an empty inventory. TASK-FORCE RECOMMENDATION QUOTED AS A RECOMMENDATION, NOT ADOPTED POLICY: the AI Task Force report explicitly states "We DO NOT recommend developing a single overarching generative AI policy" under its own "Policy Gaps" heading; this page treats that as the task force's recorded position and does not assert it as UNC's final, adopted stance absent a separate confirming source. PROCESS-BASED VERIFICATION SWEEP: none published at the bounded scope searched. NEWER PDF USED OVER AN OLDER COPY FOUND IN SEARCH: a search result surfaced "University-Regulations-full.pdf" (PDF metadata ModDate Sept 6, 2025); a newer "University-Regulations-full-1.pdf" (ModDate Sept 17, 2026, text identical at Section 3-2-203 on a byte-range diff) was used instead as the more current file at the same path pattern. PROCESS: Section 3-2-203 is an explicit bridge provision -- academic misconduct is defined as a form of "Misconduct" under the Student Code, is handled first at the faculty level with grade-only sanctions, and the Student Code's own Hearing procedure separately confirms the link ("a representative from Academic Affairs may be present during the hearing" in academic-misconduct cases). DIVERGENCE RECORDED, NOT RESOLVED, AND WORTH THE OWNER'S ATTENTION: Section 3-2-203(8) conditions an academic-misconduct appeal on the Academic Appeal Procedure (Board Policy Manual 2-1-201), while that same Procedure's own Section 2-1-202 states it "may not be used to appeal decisions pursuant to the University's Student Code of Conduct" -- and Section 3-2-203(2) defines Academic Misconduct as falling under the Student Code. The two provisions do not plainly reconcile on their face; both are quoted rather than resolved. RECORDING ADDRESSED DIRECTLY: hearings "may be audio recorded," the Responding Party is informed and may request recording, and a transcript is available at the Responding Party's cost. RECORD: seven-year minimum retention, indefinite for suspension/expulsion/revocation of admission or degree, with a stated disclosure provision for "legitimate educational interest" recipients (employment, academic-program eligibility, scholarship eligibility, "other honorific"). ACCOMPANIMENT TERM IS "SUPPORT PERSON," NOT "ADVISOR": the Code's own defined term is quoted as such; a Support Person may not represent or speak for the student. OFFICE: Community Standards and Conflict Resolution / Dean of Students, University Center 2205, 970-351-2001, dos@unco.edu -- all from the office's own current page. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED AND NOT FOUND: no office titled ombudsperson, ombudsman, or student advocate was located anywhere on unco.edu in this review. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Traces to tools/packets/unco-packet.txt with zero failures. Gated in tools/fidelity-gate.txt. Archive captures pending -- not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-16).
