UNCW's published sources on AI detection and the Student Academic Honor Code, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course syllabi and department rules may also apply, and UNCW itself asks instructors to state their own AI rules on the syllabus. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

AI detection is in use at UNCW

UNCW's Honor Code Faculty Resources page, addressed to instructors, states (retrieved Sep 16, 2026; no on-page date displayed):

"UNCW has authorized use of Turnitin's AI Detection tool through the Canvas platform, which instructors can choose to use on student assignments submitted through Turn It In." "Because of the potential for false positives, it is strongly recommended that if you choose to enable this tool, that you use it as a starting point for further discussion and investigation." "It is not recommended that you submit an honor code referral with the Turnitin AI Score as the only supporting documentation."

Source: Honor Code Faculty Resources — Office of the Dean of Students. The same page names other commercial detectors — Phrasly, Copyleaks, and GPTZero among them — as tools "available online" with "varying levels of reliability"; UNCW's own pages do not state that the university deploys any of these, only that instructors may encounter them, so they are not recorded here as institution-deployed tools.

The named-vendor sweep of uncw.edu found no first-party statement naming Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, or Examity as a tool UNCW itself has deployed. The category sweep (LibGuides AI and Academic Integrity guide, Honor Code pages) found no separate exam-proctoring or LMS-integration detector beyond the Canvas Turnitin tool named above.

02Published procedure

What UNCW's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
"A university or non-university advisor is permissible in an Administrative and Student Academic Honor Board hearing," but "[t]he advisor may not speak on the respondent's behalf at the hearing." — 03.100 Academic Honor Code, revised August 2026; retrieved Sep 16, 2026. Recording of the hearing is not addressed in the policy · 03.100 Academic Honor Code
What follows on the record
"A notation of suspension or expulsion will be placed on the transcript as 'Honor Code Suspension' or 'Honor Code Expulsion' respectively." A failing grade assigned as a sanction "shall not be replaced if the course is repeated." — 03.100 Academic Honor Code, revised August 2026; retrieved Sep 16, 2026 · 03.100 Academic Honor Code

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

From UNCW's 03.100 Academic Honor Code (revised August 2026; retrieved Sep 16, 2026):

"An alleged infraction of the Honor Code observed by anyone other than the course instructor shall be reported, preferably in writing, to the instructor." "The standard of proof for all allegations of the Honor Code will be preponderance of evidence." "A respondent who elects not to appear at a hearing may not be represented by an advisor at the hearing."

On the evidentiary standard, the policy adds that "preponderance of evidence" means "there is greater than a 50% likelihood, based on the evidence presented, the respondent is responsible for the alleged violation." On sanctions, the policy lists a range running from written warning and disciplinary probation through final probation, deferred suspension, suspension, and expulsion, and states that "[g]enerally," a course-failure sanction is assigned for Honor Code offenses. On appeals, a student may appeal "within two (2) business days after notification of the original decision"; the appeal is reviewed by the Provost for whether the student's rights were violated, whether the sanction was grossly excessive, or whether new evidence exists, with a decision to follow "within ten (10) business days." Revision history of this page

2026-09-16 — Page created. Named-vendor and category detector sweeps run against uncw.edu and libguides.uncw.edu; the only institution-deployed detector established first-party is the Turnitin AI Detection tool available in Canvas, instructor-enabled, per the Honor Code Faculty Resources page (no on-page date displayed). Procedure, evidentiary standard, sanctions, appeal path and window, and transcript-notation quotations captured from the 03.100 Academic Honor Code (revised August 2026). Office contact captured from the Office of the Dean of Students' own Contact Us page. Ombuds/advocacy sweep found only a Human Resources posting for a "University Ombuds" open to "permanent and time-limited employees," not students, so the docket records no eligible ombuds or student-advocacy office; a Student Affairs case-management function exists (Office of the Dean of Students) but UNCW does not describe it as independent, confidential, or impartial, and it was not substituted for an ombuds. Recording of hearings is not addressed in the policy reviewed. Internet Archive captures: to be added. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-16).
