01Detection status

AI detection is in use at UNH, with a use-with-caution note attached

A USNH Help Central knowledge-base article for faculty states (no page-stated date; retrieved Sep 25, 2026):

"You will learn about new functionality within the Turnitin plagiarism detection application. Turnitin is licensed for UNH and CPS faculty only." "AI plagiarism detection is a rapidly developing field. Turnitin has started to incorporate it in the existing product. The first iteration of AI detection is available to all faculty and surfaces as an addition to the Similarity Report. The indicator will show what percent of the text contained in the document may have been generated by an AI writing tool. It is important to note that AI similarity is not absolute and should only be used as a tool at this stage. ET&S has made this tool available to faculty, but we do not provide any specific recommendations on use."

Source: UNH Turnitin: AI Detection (Faculty) — USNH Help Central. "CPS" is the University's College of Professional Studies, named on the article itself; the scope is stated as written rather than expanded.

UNH's Teaching & Learning Resource Hub describes the underlying plagiarism tool and cautions on its use (retrieved Sep 25, 2026):

"Turnitin's SimCheck, integrated in myCourses (Canvas), can help faculty to identify potential plagiarism by generating similarity reports that compare submitted student assignments against a large database of submitted documents. However, Turnitin should be used with caution."

Source: Academic Honesty — Teaching & Learning Resource Hub. The Hub's separate Generative Artificial Intelligence page states the same caution specifically for AI-writing detection (retrieved Sep 25, 2026):

"Considering inaccuracies for false positives and negatives in AI detection software (including Turnitin), they should be used with caution and never the sole source of evidence for plagiarism."

Source: Generative Artificial Intelligence — Teaching & Learning Resource Hub. The same page continues: "In fact, some institutions have disabled AI detection due to reliability concerns and advise faculty against using AI detection tools like Turnitin's AI-writing detectors. Notable examples include:" Vanderbilt University, the University of Texas at Austin, and St. Joseph's University — this is UNH's own page citing other institutions' actions, not a statement that UNH itself has disabled or restricted the tool, and it is reproduced here with that provenance rather than as UNH's position. Your syllabus and assignment instructions are therefore among the relevant sources for your own situation.

02Published process

What UNH's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
Not stated for the standard instructor-led resolution under the Academic Integrity Policy. Where a case escalates to the University's conduct process under Article IV of the Code of Conduct (Academic Integrity Policy §VIII, for egregious or multiple violations), a Conduct Advisor may accompany the student but "may not testify in or obstruct an interview, author written submissions, create a recording or transcription of the meeting, bring electronic devices into the meeting, or disrupt the process." — Forums of Resolution and Procedures, Student Rights, Rules, and Responsibilities (Academic Year 2026-2027 Catalog; retrieved Sep 25, 2026) · Forums of Resolution and Procedures
What follows on the record
"If the final penalty is not determined by the time grades for the course are submitted, an NR (not resolved) can be used as a temporary hold and will appear on the student's academic transcript until the allegations are fully resolved and a final letter grade is entered." No permanent transcript notation for a formal academic penalty is stated; records "are maintained electronically by the Office of Community Standards in accordance with the Schedule for Record Retention and Disposal as described in Article IV of the Code of Conduct." — Academic Integrity Policy, §§ VII & X (retrieved Sep 25, 2026) · Academic Integrity

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

UNH's Academic Integrity Policy (Academic Year 2026-2027 Catalog; retrieved Sep 25, 2026) defines the misconduct categories and the instructor-led process. "Cheating" and "Plagiarism" are defined to reach AI use directly:

"Use or attempted use of any academic exercise materials, information, study aids, electronic data, AI tools, assignment/exam surrogate, or other forms of assistance without authorization." "Use or submission of intellectual property, ideas, evidence produced by another person, including computer generated text or work outsourced to third parties, in whole or in part as one's own in any academic assessment without providing proper citation or attribution." "The instructor for the course in which the alleged violation occurred will schedule a meeting with the student. The purpose of the meeting is to inform the student of the alleged violation, share evidence for the alleged violation, give them the opportunity to respond, and decide the appropriate course of action." "If the student does not respond to the instructor's attempt to schedule a meeting within seven (7) days of initial contact, the instructor may determine if a violation has occurred without the student's participation and, if so, assign an academic penalty proportionate to the violation. If a student fails to respond or attend a meeting, they forfeit any opportunity to appeal the instructor's decision." "The instructor's prescribed standard of proof used to determine responsibility for policy violations is the preponderance of the evidence standard; when the information suggests that it is more likely than not that a violation occurred." "Academic penalties issued by the instructor may not exceed failure of the course."

Reports from anyone other than the course instructor route through the Office of Community Standards: "Reports submitted to the Office of Community Standards by someone other than the faculty member of the course in which the alleged violation has occurred will be sent to the faculty member for determination of a violation." Where a student has "a demonstrated track record of academic misconduct or the alleged violation is highly serious in nature," the assistant dean may refer the matter to "the University's conduct process" under Article IV of the Code of Conduct instead — the escalation path the advisor and recording provisions above belong to.

On appeal: "Any student issued a formal academic penalty that meets the appeal threshold may request to appeal the decision." The threshold is a failing course grade, a failing grade on an assessment worth at least 20% of the final grade, or a reduced course grade by a full letter grade or at least 10% of the final grade. "To appeal a decision, the student must complete an Academic Misconduct Appeal Request within three (3) business days of receipt of the written decision letter." A Review Officer screens the appeal against four named grounds (procedural error, insufficient evidence, new evidence, or bias/conflict of interest); if it proceeds, an Undergraduate Academic Integrity Committee or Graduate Council Student Affairs Committee reviews it, "typically, within twenty (20) calendar days," and "decisions made by the committee are final and non-reviewable."

Revision history of this page

2026-09-25 — Page created. All quotations retrieved this date from the catalog.unh.edu, td.usnh.edu and unh.edu pages linked beside them; the Academic Integrity Policy and its Code of Conduct cross-references are drawn from the Academic Year 2026-2027 Catalog, and neither the USNH Help Central KB article nor the Teaching & Learning Resource Hub pages display an on-page date. Detection-inventory sweep performed: named-vendor sweep of unh.edu, catalog.unh.edu and td.usnh.edu (Turnitin, Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep of the Teaching & Learning Resource Hub's Academic Honesty and Generative Artificial Intelligence pages, the USNH Help Central knowledge base, the Academic Integrity Policy, and the Office of Community Standards' own pages. NOT DISQUALIFIED: Turnitin's AI writing indicator is documented as deployed and available to all UNH and CPS faculty in myCourses; the caution against using it "as the sole source of evidence for plagiarism" is UNH's own use-with-caution guidance, not a disabling or a recommendation against use, the same family as Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee State, West Virginia and San Francisco State earlier in this queue. PROVENANCE HANDLED: the Generative Artificial Intelligence page names Vanderbilt University, the University of Texas at Austin, and St. Joseph's University as institutions that disabled or advised against AI detection; this is UNH's own page citing other institutions' actions, quoted on this page only with that provenance and never presented as UNH's position — the same trap caught on the MTSU Walker Library and WVU Libraries pages elsewhere in this collection. Respondus LockDown Browser also appears on the Academic Honesty page as an exam-environment tool with no AI-writing-detection claim. No ombuds, ombudsperson, or student-advocacy office was found anywhere on unh.edu or gradschool.unh.edu; the Office of Student Advocacy and Support that would fill this role at a sibling institution does not exist at UNH under that or a similar name, and the Dean of Students and SHARPP Center pages that do exist are not described as independent, confidential, or serving academic-integrity matters, so the docket carries the standard absence line. SUBSTANTIVE FINDING: the Academic Integrity Policy's own instructor-led track (Sections IV-VII) states no advisor or recording provision at all; the Conduct Advisor's non-participatory role and the "Recording of Proceedings" rule ("All University Hearings are recorded... Participants are prohibited from making their own recording") are drawn from Article IV of the Code of Conduct and apply only where a case is escalated to the University's conduct process under Academic Integrity Policy §VIII (egregious or multiple violations) — both are reproduced with that scope stated rather than presented as governing the ordinary instructor-student meeting. Second finding: no permanent transcript notation for a formal academic penalty is stated anywhere in the policy; the only transcript-facing provision is the temporary "NR (not resolved)" hold pending resolution, and record retention is delegated to "the Schedule for Record Retention and Disposal as described in Article IV of the Code of Conduct," which was not itself located and fetched. Deliberate omission: an accuracy-rate citation on the Generative Artificial Intelligence page (a cited study's "mean accuracy rate... was only 40% and for Turnitin was 61%") is a citation to third-party research reproduced on UNH's own page, not an institutional finding, and is not quoted here to keep the detection-status section to UNH's own statements. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Subreddit demand scan not run (outside this run's research method). Internet Archive captures: to be added. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-25).
