- Ombuds or advocacy office
- Graduate Student Ombudsperson — serves graduate students only, not undergraduates; UVM describes the role as independent, confidential, informal and impartial, but states it "does not make policy decisions, adjudicate issues, or conduct formal investigation" and will not "act as a witness in a formal grievance" · 330 Waterman Building, 85 South Prospect Street, Burlington, VT 05405 · 802-656-2699 · grad.ombuds@uvm.edu

UVM's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. The Code of Academic Integrity applies to undergraduate, medical, graduate, and continuing-education students, with a separate procedure for College of Medicine students not reproduced here. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course syllabi and instructor-level policy may also apply. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.
What UVM's own pages say about detection tools
A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (UVM's IT knowledge base, the Guidelines for Faculty on AI, the Writing in the Disciplines program's Turnitin page, and the Center for Student Conduct's faculty resources) confirmed Turnitin as an actively integrated similarity-checking tool and found no AI-text detector named anywhere. UVM's IT knowledge base (updated Mar 19, 2026; retrieved Sep 23, 2026) describes the tool:
The article states Turnitin compares submissions against "websites, journal articles, and other written assignments collected at the University of Vermont, along with other schools" and makes no mention of AI-writing detection. Source: Brightspace – Turnitin – UVM Knowledge Base. UVM's Guidelines for Faculty on AI (revised by the AI Task Force Working Group on Faculty Development, January 2026; retrieved Sep 23, 2026) do not mention AI-detection tools at all — no policy for or against their use is stated, and no tool is named. Source: Guidelines for Faculty — UVM AI. No UVM page located in this review states that any AI-text detector — Turnitin's AI-writing feature or another vendor's — is enabled, disabled, or otherwise in use for identifying AI-generated student writing. That gap, at the scope of the sweeps described above, is the finding.
What UVM's own pages say about how cases proceed
- Who may be present
- "The Respondent and Complainant may each bring an advisor (as defined in the definitions section of this Code) to the Academic Integrity Council meeting." An advisor "must have no other role in the Academic Integrity Council meeting, such as a witness, and may not speak on behalf of or otherwise represent one's advisee. An advisor may not be an attorney... although the Center for Student Conduct may permit an attorney as an advisor when related criminal charges are filed and pending." This right is stated for the formal Academic Integrity Council meeting; the earlier Pre-Council Meeting with the Coordinator is not separately addressed. On recording: "Meetings are not recorded; the decision letter serves as documentation of the information presented and decision reached." — Code of Academic Integrity (policy effective May 10, 2017; reaffirmed Mar 15, 2021; retrieved Sep 23, 2026) · Code of Academic Integrity
- What follows on the record
- "The grade of XF is defined as 'failure resulting from academic dishonesty' on the academic transcript. The grade of XF is equivalent to the grade of F in the determination of grade-point averages and academic standing." An XF may be converted to a standard F, removing the notation, after completing a Seminar on Academic Integrity — but only "until program completion," and a second violation forecloses removal. Disclosure: "Under no circumstances will any personally identifiable information be released to any external individual, agency, or organization except with the prior written consent of the student or as otherwise required by law." — Code of Academic Integrity (retrieved Sep 23, 2026) · Code of Academic Integrity
The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.
UVM's Code of Academic Integrity (policy effective May 10, 2017; reaffirmed Mar 15, 2021; retrieved Sep 23, 2026) describes a two-stage process: an Academic Integrity Pre-Council Meeting, and, if unresolved, a formal Academic Integrity Council meeting.
Outcomes the Code lists "include but are not limited to" a zero on the indicated coursework, educational outcomes (a reflective essay, a formal apology, or an academic-integrity program), a grade of XF, suspension, and dismissal; the Academic Integrity Council "has discretion to assign outcomes less than an XF where they believe circumstances warrant a different outcome." On appeal, a student who believes the referral procedure itself was not followed "may refer the matter to the Dean of the relevant School/College," and must notify the Dean or the Center for Student Conduct within two weeks of discovery. Revision history of this page
2026-09-23 — Page created. First-party material captured from uvm.edu (the Brightspace–Turnitin IT knowledge base article, updated Mar 19, 2026; the AI Guidelines for Faculty, revised January 2026; the Center for Student Conduct pages; and the Graduate Student Ombudsperson page — none of the latter carry an on-page date) and the Code of Academic Integrity PDF (policy effective May 10, 2017, reaffirmed Mar 15, 2021 per its own stated revision history; PDF file metadata shows a 2023 creation/modification date, which appears to be a re-upload or template regeneration rather than a substantive policy revision, since the document's own "Revision History" section ends at the 2021 reaffirmation — both dates are recorded here rather than reconciled). Detector sweep: named-vendor sweep (Turnitin, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (IT knowledge base, AI Guidelines for Faculty, Writing in the Disciplines program pages, Center for Student Conduct faculty resources) found Turnitin confirmed for similarity/plagiarism checking only; no AI-text detector confirmed by name anywhere. NOT DISQUALIFIED: Turnitin's similarity function remains actively documented as integrated (KB article dated Mar 19, 2026, current), distinguishing this from an institution that disabled a previously active AI-detection feature — the AI-detection gap here is an empty inventory, the same pattern as Hunter College, Baruch College, NC A&T, and UAlbany earlier in this queue. A Center for Student Conduct page at a query-parameter URL (uvm.edu/sconduct?Page=AI_resources.html) that appeared in search results as an AI-specific resources page returned only the generic Student Conduct landing content to a plain fetch in this pass and is not cited; a session with more time or a browser-rendered read could locate distinct content there. Procedure: the Code of Academic Integrity describes a two-stage process (an informal Academic Integrity Pre-Council Meeting with the Coordinator of Academic Integrity, followed, if unresolved, by a formal Academic Integrity Council meeting under a preponderance standard); an advisor right (non-speaking, non-attorney except where related criminal charges are pending) is stated for the Council meeting specifically, and the Pre-Council Meeting section does not separately address advisor presence — reproduced as the scope difference the Code itself draws, not resolved. Meetings are stated as not recorded. Sanctions include the XF grade ("failure resulting from academic dishonesty" on the transcript), suspension, and dismissal, each with its own transcript-notation and removal rule; UVM's disclosure statement is protective rather than affirmative — personally identifiable information is not released externally "except with the prior written consent of the student or as otherwise required by law," distinct from institutions built earlier in this queue (NC A&T, UAlbany) that state records may be affirmatively shared with graduate schools or employers on request. OFFICE: Center for Student Conduct, 41 South Prospect Street, Burlington, VT 05405, 802-656-4360, from the Code's own "Contacts" table; the Dean of Students Office (802-656-3380, same address) is listed alongside it in the same table and is not used here since the Center for Student Conduct is the office named throughout the procedure itself. OMBUDS: the Graduate Student Ombudsperson is confirmed first-party — independent, confidential, informal and impartial per UVM's own description — but is explicitly graduate-students-only and states it "does not make policy decisions, adjudicate issues, or conduct formal investigation" and will not "act as a witness in a formal grievance." A separate Faculty Ombudsperson exists for non-unionized faculty and is not a student resource; it is not presented on this page. No ombudsperson or advocacy office serving undergraduates was located. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-23).
