UVU's published sources on AI detection and student conduct, quoted and linked below. UVU's governing conduct document is Policy 541, the Student Code of Conduct (approved March 27, 2025), which routes academic-misconduct cases through the faculty member of the course with appeal to the department chair or academic dean; UVU's library states there is no universal UVU policy on AI use, so course syllabi carry the AI rules. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

AI content detection is documented at UVU — through Copyleaks, not Turnitin

UVU's Office of Teaching and Learning names Copyleaks among the course technologies it supports (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Aug 23, 2026; re-verified Sep 25, 2026):

"OTL Support Services guides faculty through preparing and maintaining their Canvas courses and other course related technologies such as Microsoft Teams, Honorlock, and CopyLeaks."

Source: Office of Teaching and Learning — uvu.edu/otl. OTL's instructor guide to the Copyleaks similarity report placed the results in Canvas SpeedGrader: "When looking at a student submission, the Copyleaks report summary should appear as a percentage in the right-hand margin." Source: How to Access the Copyleaks Similarity Report (PDF; uvu.edu/otl/docs/copyleaks/how_to_access_the_copyleaks_similarity_report.pdf; no on-page date displayed; retrieved Aug 23, 2026, last re-read Aug 24, 2026). As of Sep 25, 2026 that PDF returns HTTP 404 and no successor was located on uvu.edu, so the passage is shown as last verified and can no longer be checked first-party; the address is no longer linked.

That the deployment includes AI content detection is stated by UVU's own Faculty Senate. From the senate minutes of April 29, 2025 (retrieved Aug 23, 2026):

"CopyLeaks and AI: CopyLeaks has been reporting false positives regarding AI generated content. More information is available on how faculty can best deal with the issue"

Source: Faculty Senate minutes, April 29, 2025 (PDF). The resource page those minutes point faculty to, OTL — CopyLeaks (uvu.edu/otl/tech/copyleaks.html), was never captured as text here. OTL also published an instructor guide titled "Disabling AI Content Detection Option" (PDF; uvu.edu/otl/docs/copyleaks/disabling_ai_content_detection_option.pdf) — image-based and never captured as text, so only its title was relied on; the title indicated that AI content detection was a feature an individual instructor could turn off. As of Sep 25, 2026 the support page, that guide and OTL's other Copyleaks guides all return HTTP 404, no successor was located on uvu.edu, and none is linked any longer; whether the instructor setting still exists is unverified. OTL's own page, quoted above, still names CopyLeaks among the technologies it supports (retrieved Sep 25, 2026).

On AI-use rules themselves, UVU's library states (blog post, no on-page date displayed; retrieved Aug 23, 2026): "UVU doesn't have one universal policy for AI use, so your first step is always to check your course syllabus or instructor's guidelines." Source: Using AI: A Student's Guide — Fulton Library. No campus-wide statement addressing the evidentiary use of Copyleaks AI scores in misconduct cases was located in this review — that absence is stated here rather than filled in.

02Published procedure

What UVU's own documents say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
“In student disciplinary hearings and appeals, the accused student, alleged victim, accused student organization, complainant, and respondent have the right to be assisted by a support person/advisor of their choice.” On recording: “Complainants, respondents, witnesses, and any other participants in the conduct process are prohibited from recording interviews, hearings, and other meetings before, during, and after the disciplinary process.” — Policy 541, Student Code of Conduct, §5.13.3 and §5.5.4 (approved and effective March 27, 2025; retrieved Aug 23, 2026) · Policy 541 (PDF)
What follows on the record
“Transcript notations regarding suspension, dismissal, or expulsion shall not contain any information about the underlying conduct, but will state that formal disciplinary action resulting in suspension and/or expulsion has been imposed.” The same policy states: “Student Conduct records shall typically be retained for at least ten years after a student’s graduation or withdrawal.” — Policy 541, Student Code of Conduct, §5.15.4 and §5.15.1 (approved and effective March 27, 2025; retrieved Aug 23, 2026) · Policy 541 (PDF)

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution’s own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

From Policy 541, the Student Code of Conduct (approved and effective March 27, 2025; retrieved Aug 23, 2026):

"While all members of the university community are encouraged to report any suspected violation(s) of the Student Code to the Student Conduct Office, university employees are required to report any suspected student violation(s) of the Student Code to the Student Conduct Office within 24 hours of learning of the alleged violation." "Preponderance of evidence means it is more likely than not, or more than 50 percent in favor, that the misconduct occurred as alleged." "Students are presumed not responsible or innocent for misconduct until responsibility is established by a preponderance of the evidence." "The University will provide access to all material evidence that is in its possession to the accused student, an alleged victim, or an accused student organization, including both inculpatory and exculpatory evidence, no later than one week before the day on which a proceeding begins." "Respondent(s) or complainant(s) may appeal a decision or sanction of the student conduct administrator to the Student Conduct Appeal Panel within five school days of the decision."

For academic misconduct specifically, Policy 541's decision-maker table (§5.8.1) names the student conduct administrator as the faculty member of the course in which the misconduct occurred, with the appeal decided by the academic dean of the college or school, or a designated department chair. Sanctions in the policy (§4.7.2) range from academic sanctions — "failing grades, reduced grades, and/or redoing academic exercises" — through warning, probation, loss of privileges, suspension, expulsion, and "Revocation or withholding of degree." Policy 541 also states a right of access to the Ombuds Office: students have "the right to access the University's Ombuds Office for consultation and assistance resolving matters of personal and school issues" (§4.2.5.6).

UVU's Student Rights & Accountability student page states the same process in plainer terms, with two provisions worth reading side by side with the policy. It states "Faculty are required to report the incident to the Student Conduct Office," and on appeals: "If you are found responsible for a violation of the Code of Conduct, you may appeal disciplinary action in writing within ten (10) school days of the date you were notified of the outcome." That ten-school-day figure sits beside Policy 541's five-school-day appeal window quoted above; both are reproduced here as published, and which governs any case is not determined on this page. On records, the same page states: "While a student's disciplinary records are not reflected on their UVU transcript, they most often become an issue if the student plans to attend graduate school or law school, or apply for federal employment." Source: Student Rights & Accountability — For Students (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Aug 23, 2026). What any of this means for a particular case is for the institution and its process to determine.

Revision history of this page

2026-08-23 — Page created. All quotations captured this date from the uvu.edu pages and PDFs linked beside them; source documents carried their own dates where noted (Policy 541 approved and effective March 27, 2025, with ratifications recorded through June 18, 2025; Faculty Senate minutes dated April 29, 2025; other pages displayed no on-page date). Copyleaks — not Turnitin — is UVU's documented tool, and the AI-content-detection finding rests on two first-party artifacts: the Faculty Senate's April 2025 false-positives item and the title of OTL's "Disabling AI Content Detection Option" guide. Paraphrase-pending items requiring a manual read: the OTL CopyLeaks support page (uvu.edu/otl/tech/copyleaks.html), which is the page the Faculty Senate directed faculty to and could not be captured as text in this environment, and the two image-based OTL Copyleaks PDFs (Disabling AI Content Detection Option; Copyleaks Teacher Scan Tool Setup Guide — the latter omitted from the source map as a setup how-to). Deliberate omissions: a Fulton Library research guide hosted on uvu.libguides.com (third-party host) states "Honorlock—UVU's new plagiarism checker—can check for text generated by AI tools," which conflicts with OTL's Copyleaks documentation and is omitted from this page pending clarification; a "Student Guide to AI" PDF hosted by Student Rights & Accountability is Elon University's guide, not UVU-authored, and is omitted as third-party content. The appeal-window divergence (Policy 541's five school days beside the SRA page's ten school days) is reproduced on the page without resolution. No office email is stated for Student Rights & Accountability in these sources; its staff directory is script-rendered and returned no text. Automated research pass. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-08-23). Internet Archive captures: to be added.

2026-08-23 — Manual-read flags resolved. The paraphrase-pending items recorded in the entry above — the OTL CopyLeaks support page (uvu.edu/otl/tech/copyleaks.html) and the image-based OTL PDF "Disabling AI Content Detection Option" — were read by Carrie Schluter this date. No change to the page's quotations, characterizations, or detection status was required. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-08-23).

2026-08-24 — Automated research pass, not a human review. Sources re-fetched and compared this date: the OTL page (otl/), the Copyleaks Similarity Report PDF, the Faculty Senate minutes of April 29, 2025, the Fulton Library's "Using AI: A Student's Guide," the Student Rights & Accountability student page (studentconduct/students.html), its Contact Us page (studentconduct/contactus.html), and Policy 541 (approved and effective March 27, 2025; ratified through June 18, 2025) — every quotation cited from these sources, including all of Policy 541's provisions quoted or paraphrased on this page (§§3.13, 4.2.5.2, 4.2.5.6, 4.7.2, 5.1.1, 5.8.1, 5.13.2, 5.13.3(6), 5.14.1, 5.15.1, 5.15.4), was re-read in full and found unchanged and verbatim. The OTL CopyLeaks support page (uvu.edu/otl/tech/copyleaks.html) remains unreachable from this run environment — not locatable through search either — and is still listed by title and link only, unchanged from the last review. The image-based "Disabling AI Content Detection Option" PDF again returned no extractable text. Correction: the Ombuds Office's own page (conflict-resolution/ombuds/index.html), read first-party for the first time this review beyond its confidential-resource quote, publishes its own contact block — SL 201, 801-863-8952, the same room and number published for the Office of Student Rights & Accountability — and names Assistant Director Victoria Cruz. This differs from the 801-863-7237 number the Student Rights & Accountability student page separately lists for the Ombuds; the docket and source map now state both numbers with their sources rather than resolving the discrepancy. The office's email remains behind script protection and could not be captured. Archive captures: Save Page Now (web.archive.org/save) remains unreachable from this run environment; still pending. Reviewer: none — automated pass.

2026-09-03 — Sources re-fetched and compared this date; automated pass, not a human review. Unchanged and verbatim: the OTL landing page's technology-support sentence naming Teams, Honorlock and CopyLeaks; the Faculty Senate minutes of April 29, 2025 and their CopyLeaks false-positives item; Policy 541, re-read in full from policy.uvu.edu — every provision quoted or paraphrased on this page, including the preponderance standard, the presumption of innocence, the evidence-access window, the sanctions range, and the five-school-day appeal window, matches the current PDF; the Student Rights & Accountability student page (reporting requirement, the ten-school-day appeal figure, the transcript-disclosure statement, and the 801-863-7237 number it separately lists for the Ombuds); its Contact Us page; and the Student Ombuds Office page (confidential-resource description, Victoria Cruz as Assistant Director, SL 201, 801-863-8952). Detection sweep re-run (named-vendor and category); no second detector found; CopyLeaks remains the only AI-content-detection tool documented. CHANGED (a source removed, not a content change): the three items this page has carried since 2026-08-23 as unreachable or capture-pending — the OTL CopyLeaks support page, the OTL instructor guide on accessing the Copyleaks similarity report, and the OTL guide on disabling AI content detection — now each return the site's standard not-found page at their recorded URLs, rather than timing out or refusing as in prior reviews. A targeted search of UVU's own domain and the general web found no successor location for any of the three. The claims drawn from them before they were confirmed gone remain on the page, labeled with their last-verified dates (2026-08-23, read directly by the human reviewer named in that date's entry, and 2026-08-24); nothing on OTL's current landing page contradicts either, and CopyLeaks itself remains named there as a supported technology in the wording already quoted on this page. A manual check for a successor location for these three documents is still needed. Known and unresolved, not new this pass: a Policy 541 sentence in the who-may-be-present hoist above (the clause on a support person/advisor of the student's choice) whose freshly captured PDF text runs a running page-footer into the sentence at the page break, breaking the exact-substring match; hand-checked against the same PDF, it reads as the page quotes it, so this is recorded as a known capture-tooling limitation rather than a source change. Also unresolved, unchanged from prior reviews: the Fulton Library libguides page's Honorlock characterization and the Student Rights & Accountability page's Elon-authored AI guide, both already recorded above as deliberately omitted from this page's sources rather than quoted as UVU's own. Archive captures: still pending. Human review: none claimed for this entry.

2026-09-13 — Editorial review. Carrie Schluter read this page in full against its recorded first-party sources and found no change required. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-13).

2026-09-17 — Internet Archive captures requested this date by an automated capture pass; no human review is claimed for this entry. No quotation, date, finding or link above was changed by it. Not captured because the publisher refuses the Archive's fetcher — each of these returns normally to an ordinary browser, so the source is unchanged and only the capture is missing: senate_minutes_04.29.25.pdf (HTTP 200 to the Archive). Source gone. Save Page Now reported these as not found, and a direct fetch from an ordinary browser confirms it — they are recorded here as a finding, not repaired by this pass, which changes no quotation or link: How To Access The Copyleaks Similarity Report — www.uvu.edu (HTTP 404); Copyleaks — www.uvu.edu (HTTP 404); Disabling Ai Content Detection Option — www.uvu.edu (HTTP 404).

2026-09-25 — Dead-link repair and source re-verification, run by an automated agent in an attended session; Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-09-25). All three OTL Copyleaks documents this page linked returned HTTP 404 to a cloud crawler and to curl on the host: the similarity-report guide PDF, the CopyLeaks support page (otl/tech/copyleaks.html) and the “Disabling AI Content Detection Option” PDF. The Teacher Scan Tool setup guide at the same path is also 404, and OTL's faculty page answers 403 to a browser; no successor was located on uvu.edu. The similarity-report passage is kept, labeled as last verified and no longer verifiable first-party. The “Disabling” guide's title, which section 01's AI-content-detection finding partly rested on, is now described in the past tense, and whether the instructor setting still exists is marked unverified. None of the three is linked any longer. OTL's own page still names CopyLeaks among the technologies it supports, re-verified verbatim this date, and the Faculty Senate minutes of April 29, 2025 remain live, so the finding now rests on the Senate minutes alone. That change in evidentiary footing is flagged for an editorial decision. The three sources were dropped from the capture recipe, which had never captured them. Every source in this page's capture recipe was re-fetched this date by tools/capture.py on the host (review capture tools/packets/review/uvu-2026-09-25.txt); the checker reports 3 failures, the same 3 as before this pass. The documented detection status is unchanged; its evidentiary basis is narrower, as stated above.
