Reproduced from the institution's own pages quoted below — potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case.

UWSP's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — course syllabi and unit-level AI policies also apply (UWSP requires each unit to set its own), and the Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning (CITL) guidance quoted in section 01 is written for instructors, not for students. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

Turnitin's AI detection is offered, with its own reliability flagged as limited

UWSP's Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning (CITL) states (page dated Aug 31, 2026; retrieved Oct 12, 2026):

"Although Turnitin, the antiplagiarism software used at UWSP offers AI detection, this feature is not reliable. It provides a percentage estimate of the likelihood that content was generated by AI, but has been known to flag work that has used predictive text AI, including text reworked by grammar-correcting software. Because this type of AI is generally not forbidden on assignments, this software can't be used as a definitive AI detector or as sole evidence of misconduct."

Source: AI Policies and Use Considerations — CITL, "Dealing with Academic Misconduct associated with AI use." The same page directs instructors who suspect AI-related misconduct to "follow the approved process for handling suspected academic misconduct" — the Dean of Students process described in section 02 below — rather than treating a Turnitin score as conclusive.

Separately, UWSP's own Quality Course Design guidance confirms Turnitin's base deployment: "Turnitin, an originality checker that can be activated in Canvas Assignment settings, supports plagiarism detection. At UWSP, turitin.com is integrated with Canvas, our online learning platform." Source: Academic Integrity — Quality Course Design (no on-page date displayed; retrieved Oct 12, 2026). UWSP's own handbook separately requires that "[g]enerative AI policies should be added to course syllabi and discussed with students," and that "the use of generative AI for the completion of graded (summative) coursework… is not allowed at UWSP unless otherwise permitted by an instructor" — a use rule, not a detection statement. Source: 5.10: Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Classroom Usage Policy (retrieved Oct 12, 2026).

NOT A DISQUALIFICATION: the feature is documented as offered, with a reliability caution and a non-sole-evidence rule, not disabled or recommended against. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) found Respondus named separately for "online proctoring," distinct from text-based AI detection: UWSP's Quality Course Design page lists "automatic time limits in Canvas Quizzes and online proctoring via Respondus" among exam-integrity tools, with no AI-writing-detection function claimed for it. Category sweep (CITL's teaching-and-learning docs, the UWSP Libraries' Artificial Intelligence research guide, the Dean of Students' academic-misconduct pages, and Quality Course Design) found no other AI-text detector named anywhere in these sources.

This campus follows the Universities of Wisconsin' systemwide Wisconsin Administrative Code, Chapter UWS 14 for its disciplinary procedure, as the first UW System build in this collection (University of Wisconsin-Green Bay) established; UWSP's own Dean of Students site confirms this directly, linking out under the heading "UWSP Chapter 14" with the description "The Universities of Wisconsin policy for addressing possible academic misconduct." No UW-System-wide statement on AI detection itself was found; detection status above is sourced to UWSP's own pages.

02Published procedure

What the state administrative code and UWSP's own pages say about how cases proceed

Who may be present
At a hearing before the academic misconduct hearing committee, the student has "the right to present evidence and witnesses, and to be heard in his or her own behalf, and the right to be accompanied by a representative of his or her choice." The hearing committee "shall make a record of the hearing," including "a verbatim record of the testimony, which may be a sound recording." Source: Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter UWS 14, ss. 14.08(3)(a) and (c) (Register November 2024 No. 827; retrieved Oct 12, 2026).
What follows on the record
No transcript notation and no records-retention period is stated in UWS 14 itself. What is stated: a lesser, instructor-level "written reprimand presented only to the student" is not filed, while a more serious "written reprimand" imposed after an investigating officer's finding is added to the student's disciplinary file, as UWS 14 defines that term. "Suspension or expulsion shall be systemwide in effect" across the Universities of Wisconsin, and a suspended or expelled student may not enroll elsewhere in the system until the suspension expires or a year has passed. Source: UWS 14, ss. 14.04(1)(b), (h) and 14.12.

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

UWS 14 itself (Register November 2024 No. 827) states the standard of proof:

"The hearing committee may find academic misconduct and impose a sanction of suspension or expulsion only if the proof of such misconduct is clear and convincing. In other cases, a finding of misconduct must be based on a preponderance of the credible evidence." On notice and the instructor stage: no sanction may be imposed by an instructor "unless the instructor promptly offers to discuss the matter with the student." On appeal: where the sanction is suspension or expulsion, "the student may appeal to the chancellor to review the decision of the hearing committee on the record," and the chancellor must sustain the committee's decision unless the evidence does not support it, established procedures were not followed with material prejudice to the student, or the decision rested on a legally proscribed factor. Beyond the chancellor, "the Board of Regents may, at its discretion, grant a review upon the record."

UWSP's own Dean of Students office implements this process locally: "Faculty and teaching Academic Staff manage the academic misconduct process directly, while the Office of the Dean of Students provided technical support and maintains official records." Revision history of this page

2026-10-12 — Page created. Cold build (no prior CANDIDATES.md/procedure-facts research). SECOND UW SYSTEM BUILD: reused the standing finding from the first (University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 2026-09-30) that Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter UWS 14 governs the hearing process, standard of proof, advisor right, recording, and appeal path identically across every Universities of Wisconsin institution, and that no UW-System-wide position on AI detection exists — each campus still needs its own detector-status check. UWS 14 (Register November 2024 No. 827) was re-fetched and re-verified this pass rather than copied from the uwgb packet; all quotations traced unchanged. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin and its AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) found Turnitin's AI detection feature confirmed offered, first-party, by CITL's own "AI Policies and Use Considerations" page, with Respondus named separately and only for online exam proctoring, not text-based AI detection. NOT A DISQUALIFICATION, the buffalo/famu family: the feature is offered, with a reliability caution ("not reliable," "can't be used as a definitive AI detector or as sole evidence of misconduct") rather than disabled or recommended against. Category sweep (CITL's teaching-and-learning docs, including its May 2023 newsletter confirming "Turnitin is available to all instructors at UWSP, as an integration with Canvas"; the UWSP Libraries' Artificial Intelligence research guide; the Dean of Students' academic-misconduct pages; and Quality Course Design) found no other AI-text detector, and no statement disabling or discouraging AI detection as a category. PROCESS SOURCE PREFERENCE, as at uwgb: UWS 14 (the binding state administrative rule, with exact section numbers) is used for verbatim quotations in section 02; the Dean of Students' "Academic Misconduct & Procedures" page is cited as the institutional-implementation source, which UWSP's own site frames by directly linking "UWSP CHAPTER 14" to the state code rather than restating a separate campus version. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY: none located — a search for "ombudsperson" and "ombudsman" at uwsp.edu returned only off-campus results (UW-Madison's own Ombuds Office, unrelated general-purpose ombudsman explainers), confirming no such office exists at UWSP rather than one being merely unadvertised. Office: the Dean of Students is the office UWSP's own pages name throughout for academic-misconduct records and support, distinct from the CITL/IT contact (Sean Ruppert) named only for help enabling Turnitin in a Canvas course — the docket uses the Dean of Students' own published contact. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending. Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-12).
