Detection status
Turnitin's AI score is confirmed in use: WTAMU's own IT guide, last revised 7/15/25, documents viewing an "AI Score" on submissions; instructors can see it, students cannot, and Turnitin's own disclaimer that it "should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student" is quoted on the same page

WTAMU's published sources on AI detection and academic integrity, quoted and linked below. These are potentially relevant official sources, not a determination of which one governs any case — the Student Handbook itself lets each instructor choose among stated generative-AI syllabus options, so course syllabi are also a relevant source. Confirm applicability with the institution. Any dates are quoted from the sources, not a deadline calculation performed for you.

01Detection status

AI detection is in use at WTAMU, through Turnitin

A named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and a category sweep (the IT department's Turnitin faculty guides, the library's plagiarism/generative-AI guides, and the Student Handbook below) across wtamu.edu found Turnitin's AI score confirmed in use, and Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor in an exam-proctoring role with no AI-text-detection claim.

WTAMU IT's own guide, "Detecting AI Writing Using Turnitin" (Last Revised: 7/15/25; retrieved Oct 15, 2026), states directly:

"Turnitin, a writing-similarity detection product, released an Artificial Intelligence/AI writing detection tool that reports potential AI-generated text as an 'AI Score' on all Turnitin assignment submissions." "Students are not able to view their submission's AI score." "Keep in mind that Turnitin's AI detector is a tool that was developed alongside the rapid progression of AI writing tools. Thus, the tool is not always 100% accurate. ... Thus, as Turnitin's disclaimer states, 'Our AI writing assessment…should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student.' Be mindful of this fact as you evaluate AI scores on submissions."

The same guide's pedagogical-considerations section suggests instructors "Update the academic integrity part of your syllabus to include a statement on AI writing tools" rather than relying on the score alone. Source: Detecting AI Writing Using Turnitin (PDF).

WTAMU's Proctored Exams page (retrieved Oct 15, 2026) names Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor as the university's standard proctoring options; it is an exam-identity/behavior-monitoring system, and the page makes no AI-text-detection claim. It is recorded here in the category sweep rather than presented as a detector. Source: Proctored Exams. Examity was named for remote comprehensive/high-stakes exams in IT materials surfaced by this sweep, but both pages this review located for it (students.wtamu.edu/wtclass/examity.html and faculty.wtamu.edu/wtclass/examity.html) returned a 404 on direct fetch; Examity is not asserted as currently in use here for lack of a live first-party page, and is named only to record that gap.

What the Student Handbook's Academic Integrity Code says about how cases proceed

Who may be present
At a College Integrity Committee (CIC) appeal hearing, the WTAMU Student Handbook 2026-2027 states: "The appealing party may have one person accompany them to the hearing. This person cannot act as a witness. The appealing party may obtain advice from a legal advisor at their own expense." On recording: "The University will record these proceedings and retain a copy in its records. ... The appealing party may, at their expense, make a personal recording of the hearing."
What follows on the record
"All educational content will be stored and destroyed based on the University's Records Retention schedule. Suspension/expulsion sanctions result in records being maintained permanently in the Office of Academic Affairs." No transcript-notation symbol for a sustained finding short of suspension or expulsion is stated.

The two questions an adviser raises first, answered from this institution's own published documents — or recorded as not stated in them.

The WTAMU Student Handbook 2026-2027 (retrieved Oct 15, 2026; footer credits the Office of Community Standards, JBK Suite 102, 806-651-2389) places Generative AI directly inside its Academic Integrity Code: "West Texas A&M University offers faculty members the following choices in approaching this complex challenge," including "Use of Generative AI Permitted Under Some Circumstances with Permission" (where "Any use outside of faculty-defined parameters constitutes a violation of academic integrity") and "Generative AI Permitted with Attribution" (where "Using an AI tool without proper attribution qualifies as a violation of academic integrity"). An initial case is handled by the instructor and, if unresolved, the direct supervisor or dean; a student may then appeal to a College Integrity Committee.

"If the student is appealing the finding of violation itself, the accuser has the burden of proving their case by the preponderance of the evidence (proof that leads a reasonable person to conclude that the facts in issue are more likely to have occurred than not)." "The CIC may impose any of the sanctions described in the Student Handbook up to and including suspension or expulsion."

Academic sanctions include "A grade reduction for the course," "A zero for the assignment," suspension, or expulsion. A student with knowledge of a violation who self-reports before being suspected "will be understood as repentant and acting in good faith toward the community," which the Handbook says "will be considered with great weight by all hearing and sanctioning bodies." Revision history of this page

2026-10-15 — Page created. Cold build; no prior CANDIDATES.md or procedure-facts.json research to reuse. Named-vendor sweep (Turnitin AI writing indicator, SimCheck, Originality, Copyleaks, iThenticate, GPTZero, Originality.ai, Winston AI, Crossplag, ZeroGPT, Packback, Grammarly Authorship, Honorlock, Proctorio, Respondus, Examity) and category sweep (IT's Turnitin faculty guides, the library's plagiarism/AI guides, and the Student Handbook) found Turnitin's AI score CONFIRMED IN USE via IT's own 7/15/25 guide; Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor found in an exam-proctoring role only, no AI-text-detection claim, recorded in the sweep and not presented as a detector. EXAMITY NAMED IN SEARCH RESULTS, NOT CONFIRMED LIVE: Examity surfaced as a WTAMU proctoring vendor in archived search summaries and in a Gartner note that Examity's own platform was slated to migrate test-takers to ProctorU after October 2024, but both first-party WTAMU URLs this review located for it (students.wtamu.edu/wtclass/examity.html, faculty.wtamu.edu/wtclass/examity.html) returned HTTP 404 on direct fetch this pass; nothing is asserted about Examity's current status at WTAMU, and the gap is recorded rather than guessed at. DETECTOR CONFIRMED, NOT A DISQUALIFICATION QUESTION. EVIDENTIARY WEIGHT QUOTED FROM THE SOURCE ITSELF: the IT guide quotes Turnitin's own disclaimer ("should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student") and separately tells instructors to rely on a syllabus statement rather than the score alone — both are the institution's own stated limits, not this page's characterization. PROCESS: the Student Handbook 2026-2027's Academic Integrity Code places Generative AI directly inside the standard violation definitions (two instructor-selectable syllabus options — permitted-with-permission, permitted-with-attribution — each tied to a stated violation condition), confirming the IT guide's own recommendation that instructors post a syllabus statement. The initial process is instructor/direct-supervisor/dean-level; only a College Integrity Committee (CIC) appeal of a finding-of-violation is explicitly bound to a preponderance standard, which the Handbook states and defines in its own words rather than leaving the term unglossed. RECORDING ADDRESSED UNUSUALLY PERMISSIVELY: unlike most pages in this collection, WTAMU's own text affirmatively permits the appealing student's personal recording of the CIC hearing, alongside the University's own institutional recording — both are quoted rather than only the institutional one. RECORD: no transcript-notation symbol for a sustained finding short of suspension/expulsion is stated; the Handbook instead states a records-retention schedule and permanent Office of Academic Affairs retention specifically for suspension/expulsion. OMBUDS/ADVOCACY CHECKED AND NOT FOUND: no office titled ombudsperson, ombudsman, or student advocate was located anywhere on wtamu.edu in this review; the Office of the Registrar's "advocate" language is scoped to registration holds and the Handbook's "victim's advocate" is scoped to Title IX/victim services, neither of which is an academic-integrity ombuds and neither is substituted here. OFFICE CONTACT: every Student Handbook page footer names the Office of Community Standards (JBK Suite 102, 806-651-2389); no office-wide email is published anywhere the footer appears, so none is stated. Nothing paraphrase-pending. Archive captures pending — not requested this pass (unattended scheduled run). Reviewer: Carrie Schluter (review confirmed 2026-10-15).
